Quarter Final First Leg (January 22 & 23)

Valencia 1-0 Atlético Madrid
Getafe 1-0 Mallorca
Racing Santander 2-0 Athletic Bilbao
Villarreal 0-0 Barcelona

Only 4 goals but a good advantage to the first 3 home teams. Barcelona are favourites to go through in the last game but just a score draw at the Camp Nou would see Villarreal through.

Atlético Madrid 3-2 Valencia (3-3 agg, Valencia go through on away goals)
Mallorca 2-1 Getafe (2-2 agg, Getafe go through on away goals)

Atletico started well and went 2-0 up early on through a Miguel own goal and an Aguero wonderstrike, but Valencia hit back with a flukey own goal from Cleber Santana and a power blast from Mata. Atletico got their 3rd in a header from Valera but it wasn't enough. Valencia progress to the Semi's.

Another exicting match where Mallorca were 2-0 up and Getafe pulled 1 back late on which puts them through to the Semi's.

Tonight is Bilbao - Racing and Barcelona - Villarreal.

Crazy game between Atletico and Valencia. Looked like Atletico's attacking formation paid off to begin with, but then to keep the same formation after your 2-1 up on aggregate ? They can't even keep 2 goals lead with two 2 CM's and their regular defence.

Luis Garcia---Maxi---Eller----Reyes
------------Forlan--Aguero-------

They should've taken either Luis Garcia or Reyes(looks terrible) for Raul Garcia. Though i must say everyone was still in shock by that freak own goal by Eller. Mata's goal was awesome though and great assist by Banega.

Athletic Bilbao 3 -3 Racing( Racing win 5-3 on aggregate)

Ended up beating Athletic Bilbao 5-3 on aggregate. Second game at San Mames was insane.

Athletic Bilbao started at a high tempo and their first half performance was just great. Yeste put in a great cross and Amorebieta headered the ball past Coltorti. Athletic built on that great start and six mins later Llorente who was causing havoc was fouled in the penalty box after nifty footwork, Munoz stepped up take the penalty and tucked it away with ease.

At half time it looked like Athletic would win this tie and Racing side were under a lot of pressure. They weren't able to handle Llorente upfront who used his massive frame greatly.

At the start of the second half Racing pushed forward a lot more and began to get some control of the game. Duscher then got the goal that made it look like it was the end of Athletic's battle(Athletic would then have to win the game 4-1,since they lost the first tie away 2-0). But Athletic replied quickly with Llorente picking up the ball at the edge of the box and using his great footwork to run into the box and unleash a powerful shot which Coltorti could only parry right into the path of Suaseta who showed great composure to take some touches to take the ball out of his feet and then smash into the top right hand corner showing us all that he is one of the best prospects in spanish football.

They then recieved a massive blow with Tchite finding way too much time in the penalty box and just tapping the ball in from 6 yards out. It was clear to us all that it was impossible for Athletic to score another 2 goals in the space of 14mins, but they pushed everyone forward and that backfired with Serrano get Racing's third which put the tie to bed.

Marcelinho with this performance has certainly confirmed that he was one of the best young managers in spanish football. Athletic will feel disappointed, since they should've easily won this game if it wasn't for their lapses in concentration in defence. Llorente MOM in my imo put in a tremendous performance.

Semi Final draw is
Valencia v Barca
Racing v Getafe

Valencia are doing well in the copa, but their mentality is screwed so they might collapse under the pressure. Racing v Getafe will be a tight game, but Getafe will really miss Granero who got a red card in the second leg game at Mallorca.

Default Copa del Rey - Getafe reach second consecutive final

Quote:
Getafe reached their second consecutive Copa del Rey final after drawing 1-1 away to Racing Santander in their semi-final second leg.

Michael Laudrup's side won the first leg 3-1 at home last month and survived a torrid time at the Sardinero after Pedro Munitis gave Racing an early lead.

They withstood intense pressure until the second-half dismissal of Racing striker Oscar Serrano, after which Francisco Casquero snatched a late equaliser.

Getafe, who face Bayern Munich in a UEFA Cup quarter-finals next month, lost 1-0 to Sevilla in their first final appearance last season.

They will meet either Valencia or Barcelona, who play the other semi-final second leg at the Mestalla on Thursday. The scores are level at 1-1. The final is on April 16.

Getafe were penned back as last-four debutants Racing piled forward in search of an early breakthrough which they got after seven minutes.

Jorge Lopez collected a short corner and drilled a low ball across the face of the goal for forward Munitis to stab in from close range.

The rest of the half ebbed and flowed with both goalkeepers making important interventions. Racing missed the clearest opening for a second just before the break.

Serrano's low cross found Mohamed Tchite sliding into the six-yard box but the striker somehow put the ball over the bar.

Racing stepped up the pressure again after the break and it was one-way traffic as Gonzalo Colsa, Tchite and Ebi Smolarek all went close.

But the second yellow card for Serrano in the 76th minute proved the turning point.

Five minutes later, Getafe worked the ball across the edge of the area to substitute Casquero who lashed a shot high into the net.

Racing complained bitterly as defender Ezequiel Garay went down injured in the build up to the goal, and tempers boiled over in the tunnel after the final whistle.

Copa del Rey Final

vs

Valencia vs Getafe

16th April 2008 22:00 CET

Underachieving Valencia vs minnows Getafe. A win for Valencia may save Koeman's job and a win for Getafe may secure a lucrative move to a big club for Laudrup. Would be Valencia's 7th Copa or Getafe's 1st.

Valencia have been pretty poor in the league, but they seem like a completely different team in the Cup, at least I thought they did really well vs Barça.

Getafe may lack experience, which could turn out to be crucial.

I fancy Valencia to win the Copa del Rey.

Also this game will be played at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid. Home to Atletico Madrid on matchdays. It originally said it was going to be played at the Mestalla on the lfp site but I had to double check that as it's cheating.

I think I'll be supporting Getafe, just so Koeman definately gets the sack and they can be restored.

Getafe to win, what a team, well managed, 5 attacking mids in midfield, is crazy but he gets it to work, liking Getafe more then Sevilla now.

Good and bad news for Valencia.

Bad news is that Villa is doubtful. Considering the importance of the game for Koeman I wouldn't be suprised if he started Villa when he's injured.

Good news is that Maduro is injured and out of the Copa Final. Valencia fans everywhere will be celebrating.

Copa Del Rey Final Won't Be Broadcast In The UK

Quote:

News that Sky won't show Wednesday night's King's Cup final has left UK-based Spanish football fans fuming. Valencia fan Dan Jones, from London, has a few things to say...

Disclaimer: The following piece represents the views of the individual, and not necessarily the website.

That Sky Sports have chosen not to air the Copa del Rey final in the UK has come as a massive disappointment to most football fans I know, including those who watch just the one game of La Liga football a week.

And yet, it is not a surprise, for it is just symptomatic of the irresponsible attitude Sky have towards sports. The standard practice seems to be to hog the rights for as many events as possible, and then ignore half of them.

The idea is very simple, and perhaps very smart from a business perspective. If you cannot show an event, you have made sure other sports channels also cannot not show it. Standard practice for Sky and partners, I would presume. What it means for sport? Who cares!

Time after time, Revista de la Liga shows Sunday telecast as starting at 6pm on Sunday, and you tune your television at that time only to see that they will show only the second half.

On the rare occasion that Real Madrid are playing at the time, they make some exceptions and move the telecast away from SS1, but the r
