Burley eyes Guthrie deal

Southampton manager George Burley has confirmed an interest in having Danny Guthrie at his disposal next season.

The Liverpool midfielder ended last season on loan with The Saints, impressing in his ten appearances for the Championship club.

Burley is looking into hanging onto Guthrie for Southampton's promotion charge next term and is exploring his options.

"It's something we'll be looking at in the summer," he told the Southern Echo.

"Danny did very well. I like Danny and it's something we'll consider - naturally finance will come into play.

"He's only 20 and has got potential. He came in and did well for us and we'll look at in the summer.

"At the moment he's not in the Liverpool first-team squad so there might be an opportunity there."

Cranie poised for Saints exit

Martin Cranie looks set to leave Southampton after the club confirmed he had rejected a new contract.

The 20-year-old defender spent four months on loan at his hometown club Yeovil last season and has made just 25 first-team appearances for Saints.

A statement on the Southampton website said: "Martin Cranie has rejected the club's offer of a new deal.

"Unless there is a sudden change of heart he will become a free agent at the end of the month and be clear to choose which club he joins.

"Saints would be entitled to compensation for his training and development from whichever club he joins.

"If the clubs cannot agree a sum, it will be settled by a tribunal."

Gorman steps in for Saints

John Gorman has been installed as Southampton's temporary first-team coach after Glynn Snodin's decision to join West Ham.

Alan Curbishley called on his former coach at Charlton to link up with him once more at Upton Park, and Saints have moved quickly to bring in a replacement.

Gorman, formerly Glenn Hoddle's assistant with England and most recently Northampton manager, had already moved to St Mary's as chief scout in May.

He will now help with first team affairs until the Championship club bring in a new face to reinforce their coaching staff.

"We will have a look at things over the next few weeks and plan ahead, but nothing is sorted at the moment," Burley told the club's official website.

"We are fortunate to have John Gorman already on board and he will help out on that side and become more involved."

Saganowski pens Saints deal

Southampton have signed striker Marek Saganowski from Troyes for an undisclosed fee.

Saganowski enjoyed a successful loan spell at St Mary's last season, scoring 10 goals in 13 games which attracted interest from a number of other clubs.

But Saints boss George Burley managed to fend off all interest from other clubs to keep the Poland international at St Mary's on a three-year deal.

"It has been pending for a while but I'm glad everything is sorted," said Burley.

"He is a smashing player who showed his qualities at the end of last season and I'm very pleased to have him on board for the new campaign."
