Sven Ericksson says no
This Saturday's A bola claims that Benfica have sounded Eriksson for the Benfica Job. Eriksson is apparently on his way out of Manchester City as the Mancini looks to be next in line for the job.
The biggest obstacle right now are wages..
From my blog - Talking to the Doll
With his 2 spells at the helm of Benfica(82-84 and 89-92), these were his accomplishments:
3 league Titles(82/83, 83/84 and 90/91)
1 Portuguese Cup (82/83)
1 Portuguese Supercup (88/89)
UEFA Cup Finalist(82/83)
Champions Cup(now Champions League)Finalist(89/90)
totals
233 games; 159 wins; 47 ties; 27 losses.
He was the man that debuted Rui Costa in Benfica's senior team, at the time claiming that Benfica had found a worthy substitute for the Valdo's #10 jersey.
Queiroz who?

Man City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is reportedly on Benfica's shortlist to potentially return for a third spell at the Lisbon club.
The 60-year-old Swede had two successful spells at the Stadium of Light between 1982-84 and from 1989-92 during which Benfica claimed three league titles.
Eriksson is believed to have been recommended by Benfica playmaker Rui Costa who was a player under him in 1991, although Manchester United number two Carlos Queiroz is another strong candidate.
Reports in Lisbon today claim Eriksson, who still has a house on the outskirts of the city, would be replaced at City by Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini who is set to leave Italy at the end of the season.
However, it is unlikely Eriksson would quit City for a job in an inferior competition with less funds to spend in the transfer market.

As the last paragraph says, it's unlikely that Eriksson will go to Benfica.

I guess it's more important to battle against relegation than making it into the Champions League.Than again Mr.Ericksson have to fund his lavish lifestyle.

Quieroz who? Are you implying that it was Eriksson that discovered Rui Costa?
Rui Costa made his Benfica debut 9/22/91. At that point Rui Costa had already won the world youth championship under Quieroz, 6/30/91.
Sven is no doubt a great coach but I would prefer to see Quieroz at Benfica. Benfica doesnt have the money to buy so we need someone good at developing young talent and theres no one better then Quieroz.

Definitely we have to start producing young players. Benfica is a big club, they should have no problem getting the best kids in Portugal to come play for them, they are just going to have to invest a bit of money into the academy, because right now sporting has the rep of best school in the country (possibly the world).
I like Erikson but I rather see a Portuguese coach who will have pride in his youngsters.

"He was the man that debuted Rui Costa in Benfica's senior team" - those were my words.
Yes Queiroz has a knack for developing young players, but presently Benfica's formation isn't exactly bad off.
The thing is that, benfica fans want results and they want them yesterday. The fan base does not have the patience to wait 3-4 years for a team to mature, not to mention, Benfica does not have the capital to hold a player once the player starts to be noticed.
The speculation about Queiroz always made me laugh, mainly because he is in a position that many wish they were in, he is the coach @ MU, he runs practices, he draws up training programs, and he doesn't mind being second fiddle to SAF.
Is he capable of taking over Benfica? absolutely, but he is a coach that will need time to put his program and phylosophies into effect as it is a long term program and not something that will yield immediate results.
and in that aspect Erikson would be a better fit.
Benfica's feeder system is the best it's ever been, and proof of that is the amount of players we are currently placing in the national teams at all age levels.
What Benfica really needs is a coach that can step in, evaluate the team and make the necessary changes for the team to be competitive, that is the short term goal .
Long term
There is a very promising young base of players - Adu, DiMaria, Fellipe Bastos, Carvalhas, Romeu Ribeiro, Miguel Victor, Simao - that will need to be integrated in the senior team and make the team strong with a balance of youth and experience, for this the fans will have to be patient. But for right now we need someone who can balance the squad with 2-3 new players.
Realistically, you'd probably have a better chance of seeing Fernando Santos back at Benfica then seeing Queiroz.

Yes those were your words, so what then were you trying to say with the "Quieroz who"?
Quieroz wouldnt need 3 to 4 years to get Benfica to a good playing level. Benfica already has good players, it just a matter of getting them to play. Chalana already has Benfica player better then they ever did with Camacho.
Quieroz is a great tactical coach, great at developing players (dont think that he hasnt helped immensely with the young players at Man Utd, including Ronaldo). He would be able to get Benfica playing great and keep the youths coming through which is key because there is no Portuguese team that will keep great talent for long but I think Quieroz would be able to stablize the flow of talent coming through the ranks.
You say Benfica has no chance at getting Quieroz? I think it would be easier to get Quieroz then Eriksson but thats just a matter of opinion. Bottom line is, until he says NO, I'll keep hoping!!!

Queiroz is the best man for the job, for sure. I just worry that he won't want to leave Man U.

Every assistant coach wants to eventually one day run his own show. Especially when he sees the head coach get allot of the credit that belongs to him. I think that Quieroz falls into this category. Of course he is not going to admit that he does not like to be second to SAF. Quieroz knows his place and has enough class to realize not to rock the boat and his chance will come. Quieroz will come (and would like to come ) to Benfica if the money is there for him and if he is allowed to run the show. I think this man is one of the most under rated youth developers in the world. That makes him a perfect fit in Portugal. His salary will be easily paid for in the teams succes and the sales of youth players that he will help develop. We need forward think/planning in this team. All too often we kill or future in order to put a bandaid solution for today. He is my first choice. After him the there is the VS and VG coaches, but that is a bit of a drop in calibre in my opinion, but still better than what we have had in the last few years.

Quieros - I hope its true! (in todays ABOLA)
