YOUNG ADU READY FOR PRO SOCCER

NEW YORK - Freddy Adu stood on the dais and waved the fancy black pen he had used to seal the deal.

"We've been through some tough times, Mom," the 14-year-old phenom said. "But look, here's your son, standing right here, staring back at you. Hey, I've signed my first professional contract and it's all thanks to you."

Like millions of other kids, he will be driven to soccer practice by his mom next spring. He loves to listen to rappers Eminem and 50 Cent, has posters of David Beckham and Diego Maradona in his room and lists "Lord of the Rings" as his favorite movie.

But no other teenage soccer player will make hundreds of thousands of dollars in the United States and has been called everything from the next Pele to the LeBron James of MLS.

"If you're good enough, you're old enough," Adu said Wednesday, a day after signing with Major League Soccer. "If you feel like you're ready to go, hey, give it a shot."

He'll start his career with DC United, hoping to earn a place in the starting lineup and play his way onto the U.S. team for the 2006 World Cup, which starts a week after his 17th birthday.

"I like to think of myself as having a pretty good chance," he said.

Already, MLS is ready for Freddy. His new team's opener on April 3 will be televised nationally by ABC. What viewers could see is a boy showing rare speed and skill against men.

At 5-foot-8 and 140 pounds, Adu looks too small to be a pro, but there's time for him to fill out.

"He's a very graceful athlete. His first touch and his vision are outstanding for a player of his age," U.S. national team coach Bruce Arena said.

Adu, who left Ghana in 1997 and became a U.S. citizen in February, was introduced by MLS at Madison Square Garden, where the soccer world gathered 12 years earlier for the preliminary draw for the 1994 World Cup.

He sounds far more mature than most 14-year-olds; he's scheduled to finish high school in March. But when you're regarded as the top soccer prospect in America - the world, according to MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis - it's tough to be just another teenager.

"It's been pretty hard, I guess, but I have fun with it," Adu said. "Sometimes you go out, you want to have fun with your friends and stuff, but you go out, people recognize you and just swarm you, and you've got to start to give autographs."

Manchester United, Chelsea and PSV Eindhoven tried to sign him, according to his agent, Richard Motzkin. But if le had gone to Europe, soccer's complicated rules probably would have limited him to a youth team rather than a top club until 2007, when he turns 18.

In MLS, he can play as soon as DC United thinks he's ready. It also allows him to stay at home.

"It just gives me a chance to be me, really, be with my family and just be a normal kid," he said. "Everyone is like, 'Oh, could you have signed with European teams?' I could have, but I decided not to because I have a long way to go, and I want to mature and be at home for a little bit. And when the right time comes, I get the opportunity to go."

MLS gave him a four-year contract with a two-year league option. While no details were disclosed, league officials say that for "special" players, there are marketing agreements that give them more than the maximum salary, $280,000.

If he gets on the field with DC United early next season, Adu would become the youngest player for a major American team since 14-year-old Fred Chapman debuted for Philadelphia of major league baseball's American Association in 1887, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. In a sign of the U.S. Soccer Federation's confidence, Adu was picked Wednesday as a replacement on the American Under-20 team that will play in the FIFA World Youth Championship starting Nov. 27 in the United Arab Emirates.

In a way, Adu's life will be more normal starting next year. He's mostly been away from his Maryland home since early 2002 to take part in the U.S. Under-17 team's residency program in Bradenton, Fla. He looks forward to returning home.

His neighborhood is far different than his surroundings growing up in Tema, Ghana.

Adu started kicking a ball when he was about 21/2 and learned to play in bare feet on fields littered with rocks and broken bottles, he said.

He came to the United States after his mother, Emelia, won a State Department visa lottery, hoping to improve the education of her two boys. Adu has a 12-year-old brother, Fro.

At first, he tried other sports. "I was hooked on basketball for a while," he said. At other times he thought it had been a mistake to move from Ghana, where soccer is king.

"It got to a point where I was just like, 'Oh, God, I'm never going to get a chance to play and have fun like I used to,'" he said. "But you know what, I was wrong about that."

It will take years for Adu to show whether he's soccer's next great star. Arena said it was impossible to forecast just how good Adu will be.

"There are young athletes in every sport in this country and around the world that are highly regarded by the adults at early ages that never meet the expectations of the adults," he said.

Soccer prodigy in U.S...for nowAdu, 14-year old whose signing buoyed sport, says he dreams of playing in Europe someday

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Freddy Adu, the 14-year-old whose signing gave Major League Soccer new credibility and its biggest media star, says he could still see his career taking him overseas some day.

"The contract is for six years. We'll see after that," Adu told CNN/Money Thursday. "It has always been a dream of mine to play in the British Premier League for a team like Manchester United."

Adu was courted by Manchester United and some other European leagues before signing with MLS this week.

The U.S. soccer league would be in position to receive a large payment from a European team that wanted to sign Adu before the end of his six-year contract.

Terms of Adu's contract with D.C. United have not been disclosed, but it is believed that he accepted less money than some of the European teams were offering, even though he'll be among the best-paid players in a league where salaries top out at a reported $600,000 a year.

"I'm very young. This gives me a perfect opportunity to play for a good team and be close to home, to grow as a player," Adu said. Adu lives in Potomac, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C.

Adu says that he's followed the MLS and gone to D.C. United games when he's home, although his travel schedule has prevented him from seeing many games.

As far as watching games on television, he says he watches more overseas games than his new league.

"I love watching Champions' League games. That comes on at perfect time for me," he said. "I don't see a lot of MLS."

transcript from CNN interview that wasn't seen because of Jacko story that was all over the news.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/11/20/cnna.adu/

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Teenage soccer sensation Freddy Adu turned pro this week, signing a multiyear deal with Major League Soccer's D.C. United -- a contract that likely makes him the league's highest-paid player.

Adu, 14, immigrated to the United States from Ghana in 1997. He is considered to be the most promising young player in the world.

CNN Anchor Bill Hemmer sat with Adu on Thursday to talk about his highly anticipated professional debut.

HEMMER: How does it feel being a pro now?

ADU: The same way it felt two days ago.

HEMMER: No difference?

ADU: No difference.

HEMMER: You're kind of in a different category these days.

ADU: Yeah, yeah.

HEMMER: Why did you want to stay close to home, in D.C.?

ADU: Because I am only 14, and you know, I talked about this with my mom. She wants me to just be around her for a little bit longer. And that had a little bit to do with my decision.

HEMMER: When did you think you were a pretty special player? What age?

ADU: I don't know, around 5 years old.

HEMMER: Really? That young? What were you doing at 5?

ADU: I was playing with kids that were 10 years old, 9, and I was holding my own.

HEMMER: I read a story about your family. They won an immigration lottery back in Ghana, which allowed them access to the U.S. How did that work?

ADU: We just applied for an immigration lottery, and the chances of winning that are very slim. And somehow, you know, we won it, and we had the opportunity to come here.

HEMMER: You became a U.S. citizen this past year, February. What did that mean to you?

ADU: That meant a lot. I mean, this country's treated me so well. It's given me a lot of opportunities and to become a citizen -- just, I was very excited and my mom was, too.

HEMMER: What do you think about the attention right now? It's coming fast and furious, isn't it?

ADU: Yeah, yeah. But I'm not really worried about it.

HEMMER: You're OK with it?

ADU: I'm OK with it.

HEMMER: Some people describe you with remarkable speed, vision and ball-handling skills. You practiced with some of the pro players. How did you stack up?

ADU: I was doing pretty well. I scored a game-winning goal a couple of times.

HEMMER: What did you learn?

ADU: I learned that you got to come out and play every single time. You can't take plays off. You can't be scared either. Just go out and play and have fun.

HEMMER: You're smart, too -- an accelerated program in school, going to graduate early. That's certainly good news. Got a question for you. We were talking about this yesterday. Who's your favorite player of all time?

ADU: Pele.

HEMMER: You've seen him on videotape?

ADU: Yes.

HEMMER: What do you like about him?

ADU: Everything. His speed, his goal-scoring ability, his skill, everything about him -- I mean, he's the greatest player. I'm sure if you ask anybody else they'll say Pele is the greatest player.

HEMMER: Athletically, do you see similarities? ...

ADU: I guess, I don't know. Maybe the speed, and I guess the way we look maybe.

U.S. wins as Adu debuts at FIFA World Youth Championship

December 5, 2003
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (Ticker) - Teen phenom Freddy Adu made his first start Friday at the World Youth Championship as the United States won Group F with a 2-0 victory over South Korea.

Adu, the 14-year-old prodigy who recently signed a pro contract to play with D.C. United in the MLS, played 69 minutes for the Americans. He switched from left midfield to the right side midway through the half.

Adu was a late addition to the 20-man roster, replacing injured San Jose Earthquake Arturo Alvarez.

Eddie Johnson converted two penalty kicks early in the first half for the Americans (2-1), who next face the Ivory Coast on Monday.

The U.S. took the top spot in Group F and a place in the round of 16. Korea advanced on goal differential, edging Germany for third place.

"We knew the importance of this match coming in," U.S. coach Thomas Rongen said. "We played to win tonight, following our instincts. We were more aggressive and we went out to take it to them, unlike our more measured and cautious approach against Germany. We showed what we could do today."

After a penalty on Korea during a free kick, Johnson kicked the ball low and to the left past goalkeeper Kim Young Kwang.

Eleven minutes later, Korean captain Kim Jin Kyu took out the legs of American Bobby Convey for a penalty. Johnson again converted, sneaking the ball past the outstretched arm of Kim.

"I kind of hesitated and waited for him to move," Johnson said. "But I always go the same way. If I had another one in the game, I still would have gone the same way."

With the U.S. continuing to dominate possession at the start of the second half, the Koreans - knowing a 2-0 loss would still advance them - were content to kill time.

Default Vote for Freddy Adu

ESPN Page 2 - Soccer Props
http://msn.espn.go.com/page2/s/list/moves/2003.html

On the normally humorous "back page" of their website, soccer gets two mentions in a look at best pick-ups/additions in sports in the past year.

First there is a straight-up analysis of why Freddy Adu and MLS win with his signing (there is even an implication that MLS will be around for a long time and that the level of play ain't bad).

Second, Tim Howard at Manchester United gets listed in the honorable mentions category.

There was no condescension towards soccer. It is mentioned matter-of-factly as belonging amidst other major sports (although Tennis and Golf are also recognized so it wasn't a piece restricted to "major sports".
