#10 Role Scores With Adu 12/08/04

After scoring from an attack midfield position, D.C. United phenom Freddy Adu admitted that he felt most at home with Peter Nowak’s decision to start the rookie in his preferred place.

"That's my natural position,” he asserted. “It gave me a chance to play with a bit more comfort.”

”It was just one of those days where I felt like everything was clicking - I saw the whole field, I was reading the plays two or three plays ahead."

The 15-year old calmly slotted his third goal of the MLS season to begin a 3-1 destruction of Colorado by shrewdly bursting through a seam and patiently lining up a Joshua Gross feed from 12 meters.

"Before the game, the guys said, 'you have to get a goal for yourself, because you've been playing well lately,’” shared Adu. “To get the goal felt great.”

”My mom's probably laughing right now, because she asked me to get her a goal tonight and I told her I'd try."

Nowak explained that his star pupil earned the start and the #10 role with his recent efforts.

"The last three weeks he has proven to all of us, including my players, that he deserves to be on the field,” said the coach. “He is the one that brought to life the U.S. Open Cup game and he changed the last game in San Jose.”

”So you know as far as that, we start to trust players and he is a part of this team and today was great.”

Personally I didn't think he would do much more than this initially. I mean its one thing to be able to play heads and shoulders above people near your physical makeup with exceptional skill advantage but when the players you play against are bigger faster and/or stronger with less technical ability, it really nulifies any advantage he would have. Give him a year or two to grow a little more, fill out his frame and then watch his exceptional skill take over from there.

I think most people who know about football knew that he wouldn't be a huge hit in his first, or perhaps even up to his third season.
He's playing at least one level too high for him to excell in. What the deal is, is the potential. However potential means nothing if you don't fulfill it.
I learned that the painful way.

At 14 it's great just that Adu looks like an average MLS player.

very true, there are somethings he's done wrong like any young player but the biggest thing holding him back is his size, his skill level is there as is his speed.
