...In a rare scene, the media at Rui Costa's post-game press conference gave him a round of applause...

Second best player to ever play for Benfica. Great player and classy individual. I admire him a lot. No mistaking where his heart is. He will try to do his best for Benfica in his new job. Just hope that it is not asking a lot out of a person with little or no experience at it. Good luck RC. You deserve it.

I have to disagree I can name 10 players the did better then Rui Costa
he was part of winning a Portuguese cup, and 1 national championship, not to qualify a great Benfica player
by the way his going out on a team the finish in 4th place , one of the worst Benfica teams ever
my best 10
Jose Aguas
Coluna
Eusebio
Jose Torres
Jose Augusto
Nene
Chalana
Humberto Coelho
Bento
Toni
I can probably name another 40

I meant in terms of talent, not in terms of succes with Benfica Frank. As far as him and his new position. I think you know I had worries right from the start. We need someon good with young kids and experienced.

I mean in terms of talent, I can name 10
what did he do for Benfica?
his big retirement feast was basically a cover up by LFV for a terrible season, nothing else

I hope Im wrong but I have a feeling that Rui Costa is not big on young players. I hope Im wrong. I will go on record as saying again. I think it was a huge mistake to give him this job with no experience and no assistance. I am not optimistic at all.

I disagree... wasnt it Rui Costa that said Veloso is going to be the next big star before he had even made it to the national team? He also is big on keeping Di Maria. Wasnt it Rui Costa that took Kaka under his wings???
Even without experience, Rui Costa has made so many friends throughout his playing days that people will be eager to help him, Milan already stated a few weeks ago that if Rui Costa would come to them for any sort of help, be it advice or players that they would be more then willing to help.
I think Rui will do well because he has always been his own man and never been one to be influenced by others. Obviously he will make mistakes as does everyone but I rather have someone make mistakes with the intentions of doing good for the team then someone making mistakes with only the intentions of filling their pockets.

My point is very simple. Benfica is in a huge mess. We are in desperate need of an experienced person at this position. Either to do the job himself or assist Rui Costa. You are speeking to me as if I dont believe that Rui Costas intentions are good for this team. I have never questioned that. I love Rui as a player. I just do not have any basis of fact to say that he is qualified "YET" to do this job on his own. Time will tell. Nothing in the world would make me happier than see him do well. We will see. Lets see how many young players we see on the field next year. This year was a perfect opportunity to let the young players player and gain experience. Stay tunned I guess.

I just don't see it, I think next year at this time we can say if he did good or bad.

I wanted someone like Carlos Queiroz to come in and work together with
Rui Costa. Ive mentioned that a few times. I think that is the perfect fit for Benfica. Offer Carlos all he wants. He is worth it.
