Luís Filipe Vieira quer tornar Simão num símbolo do Benfica e está disposto a abrir um regime de excepção para segurar o capitão. Ao que Record apurou, os responsáveis benfiquistas pretendem prorrogar o vínculo contratual do internacional português (expira em 2010) e também aumentar-lhe o respectivo ordenado.
Simão esteve com um pé fora da Luz nos dois defesos anteriores. Primeiro, a transferência para Liverpool chegou a ser dada como certa e no início desta temporada o jogador chegou mesmo a viajar para Valencia onde esteve, na companhia do presidente encarnado, reunido com os dirigentes espanhóis. O camisola 20 benfiquista não chegou a acordo devido a questões financeiras e que se prenderam também com os impostos e regressou a Lisboa com Vieira, que só tinha aceitado negociar por ter dado a palavra ao jogador que não “iria cortar-lhe as pernas”. Nessa mesma altura, o líder do clube da Luz deixou claro a Simão que este não iria arrepender-se de continuar no Benfica e a situação contratual seria revista.
