Benfica recorded their first Portuguese Premier League victory of the season when they beat Nacional Madeira 3-0 away from home on Sunday. Champions Porto, who cruised past Uniao Leiria 3-0, and Maritimo, who beat Academica 2-0, are the only teams with winning records after the opening three matches.
Paraguay striker Oscar Cardozo, who joined Benfica in the close season, exploited a poor clearance from Nacional keeper Benaglio to put the Lisbon side in front after 18 minutes.
Veteran playmaker Rui Costa deftly turned three opponents before driving a shot into the net from the edge of the area to double the lead after 70 minutes.
Cardozo sealed the victory with a penalty after 77 minutes when he sent Benaglio the wrong way from the spot. The win put Benfica into fifth, four points behind the leaders.
A late goal earned Sporting a 1-0 home win over Belenenses, who were reduced to 10 men after 52 minutes when the referee sent off their goalkeeper Costinha for a foul on Brazilian striker Liedson. His substitute Marco saved Joao Moutinho's subsequent kick.
Sporting clinched the three points nine minutes from the end when Liedson headed home a cross from the right by midfielder Simon Vukcevic.
Sporting share third place with Sporting Braga, who beat Estrela Amadora 2-1 on Saturday. Continued...

Great performance by Benfica in the 2nd half, in fact it was the best performance from Benfica so far this season. Nacional never really troubled benfica at the back, good win for you.

Benfica ranked 38th in the IFFHS

Benfica moved up one position in the International Football Fedration of History and Statistics to 38th from 39th with 175.5 points. This makes the Lisbon side ranked much higher than any other club in Portugal including rivals Porto (68th) and Sporting (80th).

Sevilla leads the rankings with 303 points by staying top for 12 months consecutively and have beaten the record set by Roma in 1991 with 11 months. Whilst Chelsea (ENG) and Santos (BRA) occupy second and third place respectively.

O Benfica (subiu do 39.º para o 38.º lugar) mantém-se o clube português em melhor posição no «ranking» mundial da Federação Internacional da História e Estatística do Futebol (IFFHS), seguido por FC Porto (de 71.º para 68º) e Sporting (caiu do 75.º para o 80.º). Rui Caçador chamou Tiago Targino (V.Guimarães) para o lugar de Fábio Coentrão, que está lesionado.

Fábio Coentrão concentrou-se ontem mas por causa de uma lesão muscular na parede abdominal não pode dar o contributo à selecção portuguesa de sub-21.

Segundo a FPF , Coentrão "fez-se acompanhar por informação clínica do departamento médico do SL Benfica, que foi confirmada pelo médico da Selecção Nacional Sub-21".
