Mantorras Given Green Light To Return


Mantorras wants to return in time for the Cup final
04/02/2004. Angolan striker Pedro Mantorras has finally been given permission by doctors to return to action for Benfica after missing nearly two full seasons with a serious knee injury.

Mantorras has been seeing specialists in Barcelona to overcome this potential career threatening injury, but after a lengthy lay-off he has been cleared to play.

Once dubbed the "new Eusebio," Mantorras captivated Benfica's supporters with his lightning quick speed and tricky step-overs but a serious knee injury suffered at the begining of the 2002/2003 season nearly ended his career.

But all that is behind him now, and the 21-year-old is eyeing a possible return this season.

"God willing, I would like to contribute this season. I know I can do it, but it's up to Camacho. I would love to play in the Portuguese Cup final against Porto," he said.

Mantorras has been doing some light training and says he would only need a couple of weeks to regain match fitness

Benfica to weigh in for Roque

Benfica are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for Milan's Brazilian defender Roque Junior.

The 28-year-old is currently on loan at Siena until the end of the season after a disastrous loan spell at Leeds earlier in the campaign.

Siena are unlikely to be able to make his move permanent at the end of his loan spell meaning he will return to Milan.

Milan are willing to let Roque Junior leave as he is well down the pecking order at Giuseppe Meazza and does not figure in their future plans.

Benfica coach Jose Antonio Camacho is keen to bolster his squad for next season and is believed to be a big fan of Roque Junior.

The much-maligned defender is likely to jump at the chance of a move to Benfica in a bid to safeguard his place in the Brazil side as he looks to kick-start his career again.

in the semi-finals between Benfica vs River Plate, he had a automatic red card, Tiquinho and Benfica directors at the end of the game apoligized to the referee for the player behavior, it was also on the referee report. Tiquinho, júnior do Benfica, poderá incorrer numa pena de um ano por alegadamente ter agredido um árbitro italiano durante uma partida no Torneio Internacional de sub-19, que decorreu na Suíça.


«Não agredi o árbitro nem nunca tive intenções de o fazer. Neste momento estou preocupado com o meu futuro. Tenho 18 anos e ainda muito por aprender», refere o jogador sobre o sucedido.

Durante a partida das meias-finais entre Benfica e River Plate o jogador terá tido um comportamento impróprio com o árbitro e foi de imediato expulso da partida. O relatório do juiz expõe o ocorrido, mas acrescenta também que Tiquinho, acompanhado pelos responsáveis do Benfica, apresentou desculpas no final do encontro.

Ainda assim, o jogador foi impedido de se treinar esta manhã e à tarde terá de comparecer na SAD «encarnada» para esclarecer o responsável do departamento juvenil.

Young Benfica player remains in coma after heart failure

LISBON (AFP) - Benfica's junior team captain Bruno Miguel Baiao remains in a deep coma in hospital here three days after collapsing and suffering heart failure following a training session, doctors said.

Baiao, a promising 18-year-old midfielder, collapsed unconscious in a cafe and was taken to hospital where he fell into a coma.

His agent Paulo Barbosa said the teen had just received a call on his mobile telephone from a Benfica official offering him a professional contract with the Lisbon-based club.

"Bruno Miguel Baiao remains in a deep coma at the clinical level," the director of Lisbon's Curry Cabral hospital, Pedro Mendes, told a news conference.

"The situation is one of great gravity, basic life support will be maintained," he said, adding the hospital would no longer issue public statements on the status of the player.

Benfica said in a statement posted on their website that Baiao had a history of heart problems but had been deemed fit to play after recent tests.

In January Benfica's 24-year-old Hungarian striker Miklos Feher collapsed and died during a televised premier league away game with Vitoria Guimaraes.

An autopsy determined the player had died from a heart attack.
