Está confirmada a ausência do médio Rochemback no primeiro «derby» de 2004, entre Sporting e Benfica. O anúncio foi feito pelo jogador, justificando a decisão com o facto de considerar ser mais importante, nesta altura, marcar presença na concentração da selecção sub-23 brasileira.


«Falei com o ‘mister’ e com a SAD e entrámos em acordo. É muito importante para mim estar presente na selecção e expliquei-lhes isso», revelou o jogador, que se assumiu como peça preponderante da equipa leonina desde a sua chegada a Alvalade.

«É difícil explicar uma derrota destas. Não estava nos nossos planos e foi um resultado mau para todos: jogadores, adeptos... É normal que o ambiente esteja agora um pouco ‘caído’», explicou, apontando, no entanto, de forma rápida, as baterias para o próximo compromisso, sábado, ante o Leiria: «Agora temos um jogo pela frente no próximo sábado e temos de nos concentrar já nesse encontro.»

Ainda não foi ontem que João Pereira renovou o seu vínculo contratual com o Benfica. O jovem médio encarnado reuniu-se, acompanhado pelo seu empresário José Veiga, com Luís Filipe Vieira, mas desta reunião não saiu ainda "fumo branco".

O jogador mantém-se firme nas exigências salariais, mas o acordo parece estar mais próximo, já que é firme intenção do elenco benfiquista assegurar uma das grandes revelações da actual temporada. Porém, não é crível que o jogador venha a prolongar o seu contrato antes do final do ano civil, até porque Vieira partiu, entretanto, para o Brasil.

Desta forma, João Pereira vai entrar em 2004 sem renovar, o que equivale a dizer que em Janeiro é livre de assinar por outro clube.

Portuguese giants Benfica have signed Greek international defender Takis Fyssas from Panathinaikos, Benfica general director Antonio Simoes confirmed.

"Fyssas will arrive at the end of December to become a part of the squad," Simoes told Radio Renascenca without revealing the length of the deal for the 30-year-old or how much it is worth.

Fyssas is said to have impressed Benfica coach Jose Antonio Camacho during last season's games between FC Porto and Panathinaikos, and more recently during a friendly between the Lisbon-based team and the Greek squad.

The defender's contract with Panathinaikos, where he has played for the past five seasons, expires in January, but the Greek club reportedly rejected a one-million-euro offer from Benfica for him in June.

Benfica are currently third in the Portuguese first division, six points behind reigning champions FC Porto.
