Benfica's Aguiar recalled to Canadian squad



OTTAWA, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Canada have recalled Benfica midfielder Fernando Aguiar for friendly matches against the Czech Republic on Saturday and Ireland next week.

Aguir has been capped 13 times for Canada but the match in Teplice on November 15 against the Czechs and in Dublin against Ireland on the 18th will be the midfielder's first for his country since a friendly against Saudi Arabia in 1999.

Interim coach Colin Miller will also welcome back captain Jason deVos.

The Wigan Athletic defender has missed the last three months of the English first division season and an October friendly against Finland recovering from surgery on a broken foot.

Once again the Canadian attack will be led by Everton striker Tomasz Radzinski and Sheffield United's Paul Peschisolido.

Eriksson pursues Benfica over alleged unpaid money

LISBON (AP) - England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says he is attempting to collect money which Benfica allegedly owes him from more than a decade ago.


The Swede said Monday during a visit to Lisbon, he has instructed a Portuguese lawyer to pursue Benfica over the alleged debt which dates from his period as coach from 1990 to '92. "The fact is, they owe me money," Eriksson told a news conference. "For years I tried to talk to them. Maybe it's time, after 12 years, to do something about it."


He did not say how much he claims he is owed, nor did he confirm Portuguese media reports that his lawyer has opened legal proceedings against the club.


Benfica spokesman Joao Malheiro, contacted by phone, said he couldn't comment without more details of Eriksson's claim.


The club hasn't given a formal response to the allegation since it first appeared Saturday in Portuguese sports daily O Jogo.


The paper reported that Eriksson's lawyer had taken legal action to recoup an alleged debt of $530,000 US.


The sum pertains to taxes on Eriksson's salary which, he claims, the club had agreed to pay, as well as interest on the amount he alleges he is owed, according to the report.


Eriksson paid the income tax after demands from the authorities, and is now seeking a reimbursement from Benfica, O Jogo said.


Eriksson was also Benfica coach from 1982 to '84.

Greek international Panagiotis Fyssas has confirmed only minor details stand in the way of a deal to take him from Panathinaikos to Benfica in the New Year.
Fyssas was in Portugal over the weekend for Greece's friendly with the Euro 2004 hosts and started the 1-1 draw.

He also took time to discuss his switch to Benfica, which is poised to be formally completed when the transfer window reopens in January.

With Panathinaikos unable to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, the 30-year-old has decided the time is right to leave his homeland.

The right back expects to have a definite decision on his future in the next week and is relishing the prospect of playing for the Portuguese giants.

"Only small details remain between me and Benfica to announce our co-operation," commented Fyssas.

"It's certain that I will sign for them in the next few days.

"I am leaving a great team like Panathinaikos and I am going to play for another big European team with history like Benfica.

"My impression about Portugal is great. My ambition is to play in Portugal, in this fantastic ambience, with Benfica."

O internacional Miguel, defesa do Benfica, prolongou hoje até ao final da época 2007/08 o seu contrato com o clube lisboeta, segunda anuncia o «site» oficial do clube encarnado.


Miguel, de 23 anos, chegou a acordo para a prorrogação do vínculo com os «encarnados» por mais quatro temporadas, na sequência da reunião hoje mantida com o presidente do clube e SAD do Benfica, Luís Filipe Vieira.

Camacho não altera uma vírgula em relação ao que afirmou sobre o «caso» Nuno Gomes. Mesmo sabendo contrariar a posição assumida pelo clube, o técnico do Benfica voltou esta terça-feira a lamentar que o avançado tivesse sido utilizado por Scolari no particular com o Kuwait.


Antes de deixar Lisboa a caminho da Noruega, onde o Benfica vai defrontar o Molde, o espanhol mostrou-se visivelmente irritado com o assunto.

«Não percebo porque se fala tanto no caso. O Nuno Gomes fez-se acompanhar de um relatório médico segundo o qual se encontrava lesionado, logo impossibilitado de ser utilizado. O relatório foi feito pelos médicos, não por mim. Se um jogador não está em condições de jogar é porque está naturalmente mal. Só que o Nuno Gomes acabou mesmo por jogar, o que não entendo», explicou.

Camacho lembra que também ele já fui seleccionador e suportou as mais diversas críticas. «Não quero complicar a vida ao seleccionador apenas digo a verdade em defesa do Benfica, que é a minha entidade patronal».

No final e ironicamente o treinador benfiquista, sempre irritado, acabou por «pedir desculpa a todos os envolvidos, por ter tocado no assunto em resposta aos jornalistas».
