Rangers 0-1 Hibernian 06/10/07
Quote:
Hibernian moved to the top of the SPL table as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season with an excellent victory over Rangers at Ibrox.
Left-back David Murphy headed in the only goal from a Filipe Morais corner kick after 59 minutes.
Rangers defender David Weir blazed a shot over the top of an empty net from virtually underneath the crossbar.
Murphy also headed clear from his own goal-line to keep out an effort from home defender Carlos Cuellar.
Rangers came into the game on a high, having beaten Lyon convincingly in the Champions League.
But the visitors were more than a match for Walter Smith's men, using the ball with great efficiency and digging deep to defend their lead.
A congested midfield made it difficult for the strikers to get involved and neither goalkeeper had much to do in the first half.
Rangers skipper Barry Ferguson lashed a fierce shot on target after 16 minutes, following a neat chest pass from Brahim Hemdani but the ball flew straight at Yves Ma-Kalambay.
It was a cagey first 45 minutes, with both sides content to sit back when not in possession, allowing for long passing spells but little in the way of attacking threat.
Clayton Donaldson, a hat-trick hero for Hibs last weekend, did not look comfortable in a wide right role, while fellow forward Steven Fletcher was not seeing much of the ball on the opposite flank.
Kris Boyd was ploughing a lone furrow up front for the home side but he was well marshalled by visiting defenders Chris Hogg and Rob Jones.
The final minute of the first half saw Ma-Kalambay scrambling to claw away a looping cross from former Hibs favourite Steven Whittaker.
And when the loose ball fell to Charlie Adam the midfielder's chip drifted wide of the target.
Following the re-start, Ma-Kalambay had to get down smartly to block a drilled free-kick from Boyd and the Hibs keeper did well to gather the ball at the second attempt.
Fletcher then rose to meet a deep delivery from Murphy but the close range header flew high over Allan McGregor's crossbar.
Adam met a dangerous cross from Alan Hutton at the back post as the game gradually opened up but his deflected shot was expertly tipped away by Ma-Kalambay.
Hibs won their first corner of the game after an hour and stunned the home support by scoring from it.
Half-time substitute Morais swung the ball into the six yard box and Murphy got up in front of McGregor to glance it into the net.
Rangers spurned a glorious chance when a Cuellar header flashed across the face of goal and the stretching Weir somehow directed his shot over the crossbar from no more than a yard out.
Murphy was the Hibs hero again when he popped up on his own goal-line to head clear a header from Cuellar.
And Ma-Kalambay was able to keep out a downward nod from Lee McCulloch as Hibs held on to complete an early season Old Firm double.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rangers: McGregor, Hutton, Cuellar, Weir, Papac, Whittaker (Naismith 68), Hemdani, Ferguson, Thomson (McCulloch 68), Adam, Boyd (Cousin 77). Subs Not Used: Carroll, Faye, Lennon, Emslie.
Hibernian: Kalambay, McCann, Hogg, Jones, Murphy, Antoine-Curier (Zemmama 74), Kerr, Beuzelin, Chisholm, Donaldson (Morais 46), Fletcher (O'Brien 82). Subs Not Used: McNeil, Gathuessi, McCormack, Shiels.

Motherwell 2-1 Hibernian
Scottish Premier League
Saturday 20th October
Quote:
Ten-man Hibernian spurned the opportunity to go top of the league as they surrendered a one-goal lead to lose a thrilling encounter at Fir Park.
Two goals in two minutes by Ross McCormack were enough to consign the Edinburgh club to their first league defeat of the season.
Hibs had Felipe Morais sent off before Steven Fletcher put them ahead from the penalty spot after half an hour.
Motherwell manager Mark McGhee made no changes to the side that lost 1-0 to Dundee United in their last league match, but set out an attacking formation with three players up front.
Hibernian won their last match 1-0 at Ibrox, but John Collins brought Lewis Stevenson into defence, and played Felipe Morais on the wing.
Mickael Antoine-Curier dropped down to the bench, and Guillaume Beuzelin sat out after having a knee operation.
John Collins' men visited Fir Park hoping to exact some revenge for the 4-2 defeat Motherwell inflicted on them in the third round of the CIS Cup in September.
And their early exuberance bolied over on 20 minutes when Portuguese winger Felipe Morais was shown a straight red card by referee Charlie Richmond for a two-footed lunge on Motherwell's Jim Paterson.
But despite being a man down, it was the Easter Road side that took the lead in the 30th minute.
Striker Steven Fletcher latched onto Clayton Donaldson's through ball, and was brought down in the box by home goalkeeper Graeme Smith as he tried to take the ball off Fletcher's toe.
The Scotland Under-21 front man dusted himself down to dispatch the kick low to Smith's right.
However, the lead was short-lived as Motherwell drew level with a stunning strike from Ross McCormack on 35 minutes, that left Yves Ma-Kalamby in the Hibernian goal with little chance as it crashed in off the bar from the edge of the area.
And just two minutes later McCormack got his second to put the home side ahead when he curled a free-kick past Ma-Kalamby from 19 yards.
Motherwell's Steven McGarry was denied a killer goal on three occasions in the second period, twice striking the woodwork, and also forcing a finger-tip save from Ma-Kalamby.
And at the other end Hibernian captain Rob Jones agonised as he watched headed efforts rattle the crossbar twice in the last ten minutes as his side pressed for an equaliser.
Goal hero McCormack was substituted in the closing stages to a standing ovation as the home side claimed their first league victory over Hibernian for four years.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Motherwell: Graeme Smith, Quinn, Craigan, Reynolds, Paterson, Hughes, Lasley, McGarry, McCormack, Porter, Clarkson. Subs: Meldrum, Mensing, O'Donnell, Grabban, Fitzpatrick, Kinniburgh, Jamie Murphy.
Hibernian: Ma Kalambay, McCann, Jones, Hogg, Murphy, Morais, Kerr, Chisholm, Stevenson, Donaldson, Fletcher. Subs: McNeil, Zemmama, O'Brien, Gathuessi, Antoine-Curier, Shiels, McCormack.

Hibernian 0-1 St Mirren FT
Quote:
Hard-working St Mirren took advantage of an off-day for Hibs to snatch a deserved three points.
A dreadful mix-up between captain Rob Jones and goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay gifted Billy Mehmet a strike into an empty net on 12 minutes.
Hibs were reduced to 10 men when second half substitute Dean Shiels was sent off after a tangle with Franco Miranda.
And, with the home side posing little attacking threat, the visitors from Paisley held on comfortably.
A second victory in a row lifts St Mirren comfortably into mid-table, while a second consecutive defeat has brought Hibs' bright start to the season to a disappointing halt.
Hibs were lacklustre throughout but were denied an early claim for a penalty when Saints defender Andy Millen had not one but two tugs at the shirt of Mickael Antoine-Curier.
The home side then conceded a ridiculous goal when Jones and Ma-Kalambay made a mess of dealing with a hopeful ball forward and it fell to Mehmet, who found the empty net via a post from 20 yards.
With the goalkeeper advancing to collect, skipper Jones, under no pressure, nodded the ball back and it rebounded off the startled Ma-Kalambay to present the St Mirren forward with the easiest of chances.
With St Mirren working hard to close them down, Hibs struggled to find any passing fluency and the crowd were growing restless at the scrappy nature of the game.
Visiting goalkeeper Chris Smith was lucky to escape when he came to gather a corner kick and dropped it at the feet of Clayton Donaldson but the ball popped back into his grateful arms, with the striker slow to react.
Ma-Kalambay was unconvincing again when he fumbled a headed back-pass from David Murphy to give away a corner, from which Stewart Kean's deflected shot gave the home side a scare.
Hibs introduced Shiels and Alan O'Brien after the interval, with Merouane Zemmama and the sluggish Antoine-Curier making way.
Smith again found himself in trouble when he missed another delivery into his area but Brian Kerr could only blaze high over the target on the half-volley from eight yards.
After 57 minutes, Smith made his first save when he had to look smart to keep out a shot from Lewis Stevenson.
The Hibs teenager then slashed an effort horribly wide after doing well to work the ball on to his left foot inside the penalty box.
Things went from bad to worse for John Collins' out-of-sorts team when Shiels was shown a red card for aiming a kick at Miranda.
With a man advantage, St Mirren coped easily with most of Hibs' attacks, and when the ball fell to Kerr in a promising position the midfielder again fired over.
It has taken the Buddies 17 years to win at Easter Road but the visitors can seldom have had a more comfortable afternoon.

Hibernian 1-1 Heart Of Midlothian
Quote:
Hibernian lost further ground on Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic after being held to a draw at home in a pulsating Edinburgh derby with Hearts.
Visiting defender Christophe Berra was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he barged Lewis Stevenson but then deflected a corner into his own net.
Hearts struck back just after the break when Christian Nade diverted home an Andrius Ksanavicius header.
Fletcher and Guillaume Beuzelin had returned from injury, while Filipe Morais was available again after suspension.
Merouane Zemmama, Clayton Donaldson and Ross Chisholm dropped out - and that was matched by the three changes made by Hearts.
Calum Elliot, Ruben Palazuelos and the injured Marius Zaliukas missed out following the fine CIS Cup win over Celtic.
Eggert Jonsson came into midfield, while Nade returned from suspension to partner midweek two-goal hero Velicka.
But the switch to two up front and four in midfield could not prevent Hibs taking the early initiative and Fletcher's 20-yard drive sliced a few yards wide.
Hearts responded and Andrew Driver sent a header a foot over the crossbar following a Robbie Nielson cross.
Driver turned provider and Velicka sent a drive into the side-netting from 10 yards from the winger's low cross to the near post.
Rob Jones claimed he got a touch for the opening goal
Hibs ought to have been rewarded for their fine, passing football with a penalty after 13 minutes, when Berra bodychecked Stevenson.
But justice was done four minutes later, when Berra deflected the ball into his own net from a Morais corner under pressure at the near post from Rob Jones.
Berra redeemed himself with a fine last-ditch tackle to deny Mickael Antoine-Curier.
And it was out-rushing goalkeeper Anthony Basso's turn to save Hearts with a fine one-handed stop that prevented Fletcher chipping home a second after the striker broke clear.
Yves Ma-Kalambay's legs came to the rescue of Hibs seconds later to thwart Velicka's 25-yard drive after Hearts applied some sustained pressure as the first half came to a pulsating conclusion.
Hearts continued where they left off by equalising 46 seconds into the second half.
Driver's cross was headed towards goal by Ksanavicius and Nade deflected it past Ma-Kalambay from five yards.
It was end-to-end stuff now and desperate clearances by Basso and Ibrahim Tall denied Hibs, while Driver squandered a good shooting chance for Hearts.
Velicka cleared a Beuzelin header off Hearts' line and a Fletcher effort entered the net only to be ruled out for a foul.
Mauricio Pinilla turned a Ksanavicius cross wide from six yards, but the match ended all square, moving Hibs into third spot but six points adrift of Celtic after the weekend's games.

Gretna 0-1 Hibernian
Scottish Premier League
Saturday 10th November 07
Quote:
A sweet volley from Steven Fletcher was enough to earn Hibs victory over struggling Gretna at Fir Park.
Rob Jones hit the crossbar with a header and the lively Filipe Morais went close with two shots as Hibs dominated the first hour.
Fletcher fired a cut-back from Lewis Stevenson past keeper Greg Fleming seven minutes into the second half.
The Premier League's bottom side rallied in the later stages, with James Grady going close with a lofted shot.
Gretna remain stranded at the wrong end of the table, while Hibs stay in third place - level on points with second-place Rangers and Dundee United in fourth.
It was one-way traffic in the opening 20 minutes, with the visitors pushing forward at every opportunity.
Morais tried his luck with two early strikes, the first pushed into the side-netting by Fleming, while the second whizzed narrowly wide.
Jones missed a good headed chance and Fleming raced out to block bravely at the feet of Mickael Antoine-Curier, following a poor headed pass back from Danny Grainger.
The loose ball fell to Morais but the Portuguese winger blazed his shot high over the empty net.
Antoine-Curier had to hobble off and Hibs had to make a second first-half change when Guillaume Beuzelin was hurt, with Clayton Donaldson and Ross Chisholm coming on.
The loss of Beuzelin from central midfield dulled the visitors' early threat and Gretna began to get a foothold in the game.
With 35 minutes gone, Hibs captain Jones got on the end of a Morais corner only to see his header crash off the crossbar.
Hibs again took the initiative after the interval and Fleming had to tip away another strike from Morais and Chisholm fired inches wide from distance before the breakthrough goal came on 52 minutes.
Stevenson did well to keep a deflected shot from Donaldson in play and cut the ball back for Fletcher to ram home a splendid volley.
Gretna improved significantly after going behind and substitute David Graham injected some much-needed urgency to their attack.
Gavin Skelton poked an effort wide and Grady sent a shot high over the crossbar for the home team.
Fleming awkwardly kept out a sliced effort from Brian Kerr after a lightning break from the last of Hibs' substitutes Alan O'Brien.
Gretna finished strongly and Grady managed to lift a shot over the huge frame of goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay but his effort bounced into the side-netting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gretna: Fleming, McGuffie, Horwood, Innes, Grainger, Jenkins, Murray (Hogg 81), McGill (Graham 62), Skelton, Yantorno, Grady. Subs Not Used: Caig, Cowan, Paartalu, Deverdics, Buscher.
Booked: Grainger, Innes, Hogg.
Hibernian: Ma-Kalambay, McCann, Hogg, Jones, Gathuessi, Morais (O'Brien 76), Kerr, Beuzelin (Chisholm 26), Stevenson, Antoine-Curier (Donaldson 15), Fletcher. Subs Not Used: McNeil, Shiels, Zemmama, McCormack.

Inverness CT 2-0 Hibernian
Quote:
Marius Niculae netted twice to break his Premier League duck as Inverness made it three wins in a row.
The Romanian international dinked a cool lob over keeper Yves Makalambay at the tail end of the first half.
Hibs rallied briefly in the second half and Clayton Donaldson was unlucky when his shot hit the crossbar and appeared to cross the goal-line.
But Inverness wrapped up the points when Niculae finished at the second attempt after some poor defending.
The victory was reward for a well-organised display, with midfielders John Rankin and Ian Black very impressive.
Hibs, who have been wretched in recent weeks after such a bright start to the season, have yet to score on any of their visits to the Caledonian Stadium
An untidy opening saw both sides struggle to build any momentum as passes went astray and players consistently lost their footing on the greasy surface.
Patrick Noubissie was making his Hibs debut and added some steel to the midfield, while playmaker Guillaume Beuzelin was left on the bench.
The game burst into life on 25 minutes when Hibs striker Steven Fletcher spun away from his marker on the edge of the penalty area but sprawling goalkeeper Michael Fraser managed to push the resulting shot away.
The home side responded with a lightening counter-attack and Rankin's long-range lob was brilliantly tipped away by the towering Makalambay.
Inverness looked marginally more menacing as a poor first half wore on and they were rewarded with a goal three minutes before the interval.
Rankin released Niculae with a neat flick and the Romanian striker calmly lifted the ball over the advancing Makalambay for his first league goal.
Hibs were struggling to break down the home side and introduced Beuzelin and Alan O'Brien early in the second half.
A Rankin screamer from distance fizzed over the crossbar before a flurry of activity in the Inverness penalty box.
Fraser saved a low shot from Fletcher and again used his legs to keep out Brian Kerr's side-foot volley.
Donaldson then burst through and, despite having his jersey pulled by Phil McGuire, managed to get a shot away, which came back off the underside of the crossbar and bounced out after crossing the goal-line.
The visitors were furious that referee Kenny Clark didn't award a goal and chose to do nothing about the infringement by the defender.
Black then saw a powerful shot whistle narrowly wide as Inverness sprung another good counter-attack.
Niculae grabbed his second goal on 78 minutes when Hibs fell apart at the back.
Graham Bayne flicked on a throw-in and the striker's first shot looked to be going wide before defender Darren McCormack slashed a wide clearance straight back to him and the forward slammed the ball back into the net.
The Romanian was denied a hat-trick in the final minutes when his 25-yard strike missed the target by inches.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inverness CT: Fraser, Proctor, McGuire, Munro, Hastings, Cowie, Duncan (Wilson 85), Black, Rankin, McBain (Bayne 72), Niculae. Subs Not Used: Malkowski, McCaffrey, McAllister, Kerr, Vigurs.
