St Mirren 0-1 Aberdeen
Scottish Premier League
Saturday 29th December 07
Love Street, Paisley
Quote:
Substitute Steve Lovell stole the points for Aberdeen as he pounced on a St Mirren mistake to score the only goal seven minutes from time.
Billy Mehmet fired just wide, while Stewart Kean and Marco Miranda headers went close for the Buddies during a dismal first half.
Miranda sent another header past as the second half action failed to improve.
But Lovell pounced after Alan Reid was short with a back-header and the striker provided the clinical finish.
St Mirren had been unchanged following the Boxing Day victory away to Hearts. But Jimmy Calderwood was forced to ring the changes after a draw with Gretna that angered the Aberdeen boss.
Fit-again Scott Severin and Chris Clark came in along with Daniel Smith for injured trio Jackie McNamara, Andrew Considine and Zander Diamond.
The home side were first to threaten and Billy Mehmet slid the ball just wide of the left-hand post after latching on to a mis-hit drive from Franco Miranda.
Foster - so assured at left-back against Gretna - was given a torrid time at right-back in the early stages by Miranda, who St Mirren looked to feed at every opportunity.
Indeed, Calderwood's reshaped defence - with Severin playing sweeper behind man-markers Richie Byrne and Lee Mair - was far from secure in the early stages and Gus McPherson's men looked capable of capitalising.
And, from Alex Burke's inswinging corner, Stewart Kean found himself in space six yards from goal, but the forward wastefully headed over.
Miranda was next to head over as Aberdeen started to come to grips with Buddies strikers Mehmet and Kean.
The second half did not bring an improvement to the quality of football.
Some neat footwork on the edge of the box and a clever chip by central defender Ian Maxwell in the 50th minute was the only bright moment in a dispiriting start to the second period.
A glimmer of a chance arrived just after the hour mark when Burke's low free-kick evaded several Aberdeen defenders and reached Miranda.
But the St Mirren midfielder headed over as he tried to inject power into his effort.
The clearest chance of the match arrived with seven minutes remaining, Sone Aluko crossing well from the left and Lovell's firm strike forcing Chris Smith to scramble the ball around his post.
But Lovell broke the deadlock a minute later.
And Reid's attempt to make amends for his mistake was well held by goalkeeper Jamie Langfield after a drive from the edge of the box as Aberdeen held on for a barely-deserved three points.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
St Mirren: Smith, van Zanten, Maxwell, Potter, Reid, Mason, Burke (Molloy 72), McGinn, Miranda, Mehmet, Kean (Corcoran 81).
Subs Not Used: Howard, Brady, McCay, Docherty, McAusland.

St Mirren 2-1 Hibernian
St Mirren eased their relegation fears and dealt a blow to caretaker Tommy Craig's hopes of becoming Hibernian boss with a comfortable win in Paisley.
But it was a freak goal from Ian Maxwell that gave the Buddies the lead after five minutes, the defender's cross looping into the net.
Garry Brady and John Potter threatened Hibs again before the second goal, Gary Mason firing home after 43 minutes.
Mickael Antoine-Curier backheeled a late reply for lacklustre Hibs.
Andy Dorman, who had received international clearance after his move from New England Revolution this week, had to make do with a place on the St Mirren bench.
But Will Haining, Garry Brady and David Barron did make the starting line-up in place of Alan Reid, Franco Miranda and Stephen McGinn.
Hibs also had three changes, with Guillaume Beuzelin, Alan O'Brien and Mickael Antoine-Curier replacing Dean Shiels, Patrick Noubissie and Filipe Morais.
Early lethargy was broken in the fifth minute, when the home side took the lead with a freak goal by Ian Maxwell, his first of the season.
The Buddies left-back aimed a curling cross deep into the Hibs penalty area, but the ball soared over Easter Road goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay and went in off the far post.
Haining was inches away from getting on the end of Brady's free-kick as St Mirren went close to a second goal.
Hibs' first sign of a response came in the 21st minute, when Antoine-Curier volleyed wide from the edge of the box.
But the home side retained the upper hand, with a Brady snap-shot from 30 yards flying a yard over and Ma-Kalambay saving well from a John Potter header.
St Mirren doubled their lead two minutes before the break after a mistake by Rob Jones.
The defender was short with a back-pss, Ma-Kalambay blocked Stewart Kean's drive, but the ball broke to the striker and his lay-off was hammered home by Mason.
The visitors, who were booed off by their fans at the interval, made one change at the break, striker Clayton Donaldson being replaced with Damon Gray.
Hibs' work rate increased, but there was little to suggest they could rescue the game.
Beuzelin and Ross Chisholm both had weak efforts in quick succession as St Mirren concentrated on defending their lead.
St Mirren were still dangerous on the break and Mason fired just wide from long range.
Antoine-Curier grabbed a goal back for Hibs when he took a Ross Chisholm long ball, rounded Chris Smith and knocked the ball in with his heel after 88 minutes.
But it was not enough to prevent Hibs going eight games without a win.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
St Mirren: Smith, van Zanten, Haining, Potter, Maxwell, Barron, Mason, Brady, Burke, Mehmet, Kean.
Subs: Howard, Dorman, Corcoran, Dargo, Miranda, McCay, McGinn.

St Mirren 3-1 Motherwell
Scottish Premier League
Saturday 19th January 08
Love Street, Paisley
Quote:
Potential Scotland manager Mark McGhee's in-form Motherwell side suffered defeat by St Mirren thanks to two goals from Ian Maxwell.
Mark Corcoran fired St Mirren into the lead after just nine minutes, but David Clarkson's powerful drive put the sides level two minutes later.
Maxwell headed home a Corcoran corner after 38 minutes to restore the lead.
And the defender grabbed his third goal in three games, driving home after Corcoran cut the ball into his path.
McGhee, interviewed this week by the Scottish FA, brought in Marc Fitzpatrick for the suspended Jim Paterson at left-back.
Martin Grehan, a January signing from junior side Dundonald Bluebell, was on the bench for the first time.
Recent St Mirren signing Andy Dorman made his first start in place of the suspended Gary Mason, while Alex Burke dropped to the bench to allow Hugh Murray to join the Englishman in midfield.
Dorman forced Graeme Smith into an early stop, while striker Craig Dargo sent a difficult bicycle kick just wide of the left-hand post as the hosts made a bright start.
And the opening goal came when Dorman played the ball for Corcoran, who sprinted down the left wing and confidently drilled the ball low past Smith and into the net.
It was a deserved lead but one that proved short-lived.
With St Mirren appealing in vain for a handball decision in the box, the ball was played back from the byline to Clarkson just inside the area and he left goalkeeper Chris Smith helpless with a powerful strike that sailed into the top corner.
David Clarkson had equalised for the visitors
Clarkson then played a one-two with Ross McCormack but dragged his effort wide of the right-hand post.
But it was the Buddies who regained the lead, Maxwell meeting a Corcoran corner and heading low into the net from six yards.
St Mirren were in the ascendancy and it was 3-1 four minutes after the break, when Corcoran cut the ball back for Maxwell, who drilled the ball home from the penalty spot.
Motherwell's Stephen Hughes tumbled inside the box under a challenge from Hugh Murray, but referee Dougie McDonald waved play on.
Dorman came close to a fourth when his shot from six yards was turned just round the left-hand post.
Clarkson had a chance to reduce the deficit, but Chris Smith clutched his shot at the base of the right-hand post.
Maxwell hooked the ball over the bar late on and goalkeeper Smith again had to get down at the left-hand post to prevent Murray's long-range drive sneaking in.
Grehan made an energetic late debut for Motherwell and Clarkson had a header clutched under the bar.
But the visitors never looked likely to stage a comeback and Smith prevented Dargo adding another for the Buddies late on.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St Mirren 1-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle
Scottish Premier League
Saturday 9th February 08
Love Street, Paisley
Quote:
Inverness Caley Thistle netted the 1000th goal since their formation in 1994 but had to settle for a share of the spoils at St Mirren Park.
Grant Munro hammered a drive from 12 yards past the helpless Chris Smith to put the visitors ahead on 38 minutes.
Inverness wasted chances to increase their lead and St Mirren battled back in the second half.
Michael Fraser made a good save to deny Jim Hamilton but Billy Mehmet was on hand to drill in the equaliser.
It looked a long way back for the Paisley side who failed to test Fraser in a dreadful first-45 minute display.
But they hit back in determined fashion and it was Caley who were the more relieved to hear the final whistle.
Inverness first threatened when Dennis Wyness, with only keeper Chris Smith to beat from 14 yards, failed to connect properly and the ball spun well wide of the target.
Ian Black then teed the ball up and drew a fine save from Smith with his volley from the edge of the penalty box.
In the 21st minute, Caley midfielder Don Cowie tried his luck with a free-kick from distance which troubled Smith as he fumbled.
Smith was again called in to action when he had to get down sharp to his right to beat away a Wyness drive.
However, the milestone goal was only delayed by seconds. After Cowie whipped in the corner, the Buddies' defence allowed Wyness to head back to Munro who took a touch before driving into the net.
Inverness, compact and organised, were breaking with purpose when the occasion arose and in the 58th minute Dougie Imrie's drive had Smith diving low to his left to gather.
On the hour mark, Mehmet got on the end of a Craig Dargo cross for almost the first time all day but headed over from 12 yards.
Moments later, Mark Corcoran's driven free-kick from wide on the right ended up at the unmarked Ian Maxwell at the far post but the left-back blasted over.
St Mirren got the equaliser on 75 minutes when Maxwell's deep cross to the back post was headed back by the stretching Dargo to Hamilton whose close-range drive was brilliantly saved by Fraser.
But the ball broke kindly to Mehmet who netted from 12 yards.
With five minutes remaining, Corcoran worked a neat one-two with Hamilton at the edge of the Caley box before driving inches over the bar.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
St Mirren: Smith, van Zanten, Barron, Potter, Maxwell, Murray, Dorman, McGinn (Hamilton 65), Dargo, Mehmet, Corcoran. Subs Not Used: Howard, Kean, Brady, Miranda, McCay, Millen.
Booked: van Zanten.
Goal: Mehmet 74.

Falkirk 4-0 St Mirren
Scottish Premier League
Saturday 16th February 08
Brockville Stadium
Quote:
A poor performance from St Mirren goalkeeper Mark Howard handed Falkirk a comfortable win at the Falkirk Stadium.
Scott Arfield's early header opened the scoring for the Bairns and the youngster doubled his tally following a mistake from Howard.
Howard's afternoon went from bad to worse as his weak punch was turned into the net by Patrick Cregg.
Cregg then put the match beyond doubt with a terrific strike from the edge of the box which flew into the net.
St Mirren's Stephen McGinn had the first effort of the match with a long-range drive which fizzed wide, although it was Falkirk who were having the bulk of the play.
It was the home side who broke the deadlock moments later when Arfield headed Carl Finnigan's cross into the net off the underside of the crossbar.
The home side then caused problems when Darren Barr flicked on Pedro Moutinho's corner, but McGinn was alert on the goalline and cleared the ball.
Following this early promise however, the game became a scrappy affair, with a heavy pitch causing problems for players from both sides.
Andy Dorman then passed up a chance of an equaliser as he shot wide from eight yards out following a flick on from Craig Dargo.
St Mirren started the second half brightly, but it was Falkirk who threatened first as Jack Ross's mis-hit cross left Mark Howard stranded but sailed off-target.
Hugh Murray then went close for St Mirren, but his powerful drive from the edge of the box went comfortably over.
Howard was then at fault as Arfield's tame right-footed shot, again from Finnigan's cross, slipped through the keeper's legs to put the Bairns two goals ahead.
Moments later Howard's nightmare continued as he punched a cross weakly into the path of Patrick Cregg, who headed over the keeper and into the net.
The two quick goals were a sucker punch for the Paisley side, and they struggled to rediscover their rhythm as the home side took control.
Cregg then rubbed salt into St Mirren's wounds as his rifled effort from the edge of the box flew into the net to put the match beyond the visitors.
St Mirren substitute Jim Hamilton tried his luck from a free-kick but his effort was straight at Falkirk keeper Robert Olejnik.
Falkirk always looked the more likely to add to their lead and Kenny Milne shot from the angle of the box, but the defender's effort went wide.
Stephen Bradley then tried an audacious looping effort from forty yards out, but this time Howard was able to take the ball comfortably.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Falkirk: Olejnik, Ross, Milne, Scobbie, Barr, McBride, Moutinho (Clarke 60), Cregg, Arfield, Barrett (Bradley 74), Finnigan (Stewert 83). Subs Not Used: Supple, Latapy, Aafjes, Robertson.
Booked: Barr, McBride, Ross.
Goals: Arfield 6, 58, Cregg 61, 71.
St Mirren: Howard, van Zanten, Barron, Potter, Maxwell, McGinn (Hamilton 65), Murray, Dorman (Brady 74), Corcoran, Dargo, Mehmet. Subs Not Used: Mathers, Kean, Miranda, McCay, Millen.
Booked: Murray, van Zanten.

St Mirren 1-1 Hearts
Scottish Premier League
Saturday 15th March 08
Love Street, Paisley
Quote:
Saulius Mikoliunas salvaged a point for Hearts with a late strike in a dour encounter in blustery conditions.
Saints keeper Chris Smith denied Hearts early on with superb stops to deny Andrew Driver and Christos Karipidis.
Jim Hamilton broke the stalemate against his former club after 58 minutes with a left-foot volley from Craig Dargo's clever lay-off.
Andy Dorman then hit the post but Mikoliunas' solo effort four minutes from time denied Saints a deserved win.
Hearts were without injured trio Christian Nade, Laryea Kingston and Ibrahim Tall and Jamie Mole was brought in for his first SPL start.
St Mirren had no fresh injuries with in-form Andy Dorman retaining his place.
The hosts opened brightly, taking the game to the visitors with some neat inter-linking play between Franco Miranda and Dargo.
But they were unable to threaten Steve Banks in the Hearts goal.
Ruben Palazuelos tried his luck for Hearts in the sixth minute, but his driven effort from 30 yards flew harmlessly past Smith's right-hand post.
After 12 minutes, Ian Maxwell connected with a low corner and from six yards out hit a shot goalwards - but Christophe Berra blocked.
The home team claimed a hand was used, but referee Willie Cullom turned down the half-hearted penalty appeal.
In the 27th minute veteran defender Andy Millen replaced injured John Potter.
The unfortunate Saints player was stretchered off after receiving an accidental foot in the face from Mikoliunas.
Two brave point-blank saves from Smith kept the scores even after 35 minutes.
The home keeper first denied Andrew Driver and then from the resulting corner a Karipidis header.
A rasping shot from Dorman had the home support on their feet, but his long-range effort never troubled Banks as it screamed over the bar.
Straight after the restart, Hearts made their intentions clear when Callum Elliott came within inches of putting the visitors ahead.
His powerful half-volley was struck convincingly, but Smith in the St Mirren goal was alert and managed to get a fingertip to the ball.
Hearts again threatened with a pinpoint pass by Palazuelous towards the onrushing Elliott, but his shot from 16 yards was weak and wide of the target.
In the 59th minute, Hamilton blasted St Mirren into the lead with a ferocious strike from seven yards after a clever Dargo knock-down.
St Mirren nearly doubled their lead 10 minutes later but Dorman's shot cannoned off the post with Banks beaten.
Hearts rescued a point with only four minutes remaining when Mikoliunas hit an unstoppable shot from 18 yards.
Then Dorman squandered two great chances to pinch victory for St Mirren.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
St Mirren: Smith, Barron, van Zanten, Potter (Millen 29), Maxwell, Mason, Dorman, McGinn (Murray 77), Miranda, Hamilton, Dargo (Mehmet 83). Subs Not Used: Howard, Kean, Corcoran, Docherty.

Aberdeen 1-1 St Mirren
Quote:
Aberdeen's top six hopes were dealt a blow by 10-man St Mirren at Pittodrie.
Andy Dorman continued his recent scoring record with a fine goal on 10 minutes after lifting the ball over Lee Mair and volleying home.
Aberdeen equalised as Mair made amends with a header from a Barry Nicholson corner for his first Dons goal.
Buddies' David Barron was sent-off for a second bookable offence in the second half as the game petered out with the visitors looking the more likely.
Aberdeen made three changes to the side that defeated Cetic in the cup with Mair in for Zander Diamond.
Elsewhere, Sone Aluko and Chris Maguire came in for Jackie McNamara and Karim Touzani in an attacking looking side.
John Potter, Hugh Murray, Jim Hamilton and Franco Miranda replaced Mark Corcoran, Ian Maxwell, Craig Dargo and Andy Millen for the Buddies.
Despite opening brightly enough, the Dons went behind after just 10 minutes.
Dorman burst forward from midfield, flicked the ball over Mair and lashed it passed Derek Soutar for his fourth of the season.
Mair made up for that as the home side continued to dominate possession and he headed home the equaliser on the half hour mark.
The former Dundee United defender found himself in space in the box and took full advantage of the slack defending to convert Nicholson's corner from the left.
St Mirren had to make a switch up front not long before half-time when Billy Mehmet failed to shake off a knock and was replaced by Stewart Kean.
The second-half began with both sides struggling to create any clear-cut chances.
Mair had another opportunity from a Nicholson corner but failed to connect with the ball.
Midfielders were struggling to adapt to the poor playing surface and there was a lack of crispness about both sides' passing.
Lee Mair flicks Aberdeen back on to level terms
The visitors were reduced to ten men when Barron was booked twice in the space of just seven minutes - the first for a foul on Lee Miller.
Then he petulantly threw the ball off the back of Jackie McNamara's head in full view of referee Crawford Allan.
Within minutes of being reduced in numbers, the Buddies almost went back in front as Soutar somehow clawed a Kean effort away for a corner.
The visitors had the better of things as the clock ticked down, while Aberdeen spluttered their way to a point.
With Hearts and Falkirk drawing at Tynecastle, this match will go down as a missed opportunity for the Dons' top-six prospects.
But St Mirren thoroughly deserved the point they earned and it could easily have been a victory they went back to Paisley with.

Aberdeen: Soutar, Maybury (Walker 81), Mair (Bus 61), Considine, Foster, Maguire (McNamara 59), Nicholson, Severin, Aluko, Mackie, Miller. Subs: Langfield, Touzani, Pawlett, Jack.
