Aberdeen 2-0 Gretna
Quote:
Aberdeen secured their first home win of the season with a reasonably comfortable victory over Gretna.
Two goals in the space of two first-half minutes from a Zander Diamond header and Jamie Smith sealed the points at Pittodrie.
The Dons could have added to their lead in the opening period but Gretna weathered the storm and improved after the break and had decent chances.
Fabian Yantorno missed from close-range in the borderers best opportunity.
Aberdeen brought back Zander Diamond at the expense of Ricky Foster in the only change from the side that defeated Partick Thistle in the CIS Cup in midweek.
The Black and Whites rung the changes after their heavy CIS defeat in Inverness as David Cowan, Chris Innes, Paul Murray, Gavin Skelton, Yantorno and Nicky Deverdics all came back in.
The Dons grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck from the start as Jamie Smith tried his luck with a free-kick and Jeffrey de Visscher chipped straight at Greg Fleming.
It was no surprise when the Dons took the lead as Diamond looped a header over Fleming and into the net.
The lead was doubled within a minute as Smith coolly slotted passed Fleming after charging down a Chris Innes clearance.
Aberdeen continued to dominate possession but failed to add to their lead before the break.
The tempo of the match slowed down into the second-half as Gretna began to come back into the game.
The Dons - without a home win before kick-off and with the Uefa Cup return against Dnipro to come on Thursday - seemed content with the 2-0 scoreline as Darren Mackie replaced de Visscher after injury.
Eric Paartalu and Paul Murray try and stop Lee Miller
This proved to be a dangerous way of thinking as Gretna threatened to get on the scoresheet thanks to some poor Aberdeen defending.
In a spirited second-half performance, Colin McMenemin, David Cowan and Yantorno all tested the Dons rearguard without really looking like scoring.
Yantorno blazed over from 12-yards after finding himself without a marker in space in what proved to be the visitors best chance.
Aberdeen were far from convincing in the second-half as they failed to really threaten Fleming's goal and will have to improve if their dreams of a place in the Uefa Cup group stages are to be realised.
For Gretna, the only way is up as they drop to the bottom of the SPL with a visit from league-leaders and champions Celtic up next.

Aberdeen progress to UEFA Cup group stages
Quote:
Aberdeen capped a memorable week for Scottish clubs in Europe by defeating Dnipro in the Uefa Cup on away goals.
The Dons progressed to the group stages courtesy of Darren Mackie's superb header after 27 minutes.
Richard Foster sped away from his marker and his cross was headed home by Mackie from inside the six-yard box.
Andriy Vorobey scored a lucky equaliser when he deflected Andrew Considine's clearance into the net, but Aberdeen held on at the Meteor Stadium.
Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood handed Mackie his first start since August for the crucial UEFA Cup first-round second leg in Ukraine.
Mackie, who recovered from a niggling hamstring problem, replaced Lee Miller up front as the Dons looked to his pace to get them an away goal following the goalless first leg at Pittodrie.
Left-back Foster also came in, with Jeffrey de Visscher dropping to the bench.
Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield prevented the Dons from conceding within the opening five minutes when he saved superbly
Jamie Smith was sent clear on the left-hand side after a brilliant pass from captain Scott Severin, but his tame effort was deflected clear for a corner and the Dons failed to capitalise.
Aberdeen settled into the game well in the opening 20 minutes and appeared content to concede midfield possession and try to hit Dnipro on the break by utilising Mackie's pace.
The tactic worked to perfection after 27 minutes when the SPL side stunned the hosts by scoring a priceless away goal.
Foster sent in a juicy cross from the left wing after evading his marker and Mackie was on hand to head powerfully past Dnipro goalkeeper Vyacheslav Kernozenko for his 50th goal for the club.
Aberdeen continued to frustrate their hosts with some dogged defending, when L'opa did burst into the area Michael Hart produced a perfectly-timed sliding challenge that triggered unsuccesful penalty claims.
Jamie Langfield was in superb form in Ukraine
Hart then repelled Vitaliy Denisov's low cross and Nazarenko's long-range effort following the resulting corner was blocked.
Lyopa and Vorobey were trying to give Dnipro width, but Aberdeen remained resolute and retained their lead at half-time.
Smith was withdrawn at half-time with a troublesome calf injury and was replaced by Lee Miller.
Aberdeen were camped in their own half from the start of the second period, but were looking comfortable - despite Dnipro pressing for an equaliser.
Langfield was confident dealing with numerous cross-balls and some of the Dnipro players were too quick to tumble under Aberdeen challenges in an attempt to get free-kicks.
Dnipro almost equalised after 62 minutes when Rusol's header from a corner cannoned back off the crossbar.
Zander Diamond went close with a header with 20 minutes remaining as the Dons looked to score a second to seal victory.
Dnipro drew level in bizarre circumstances after 75 minutes when Considine's attempted clearance was deflected in by Vorobey to set up a tense finish.
Langfield was inspirational as he tipped a late shot onto the crossbar and the Dons held on to progress to the group stages of the Uefa Cup.

Aberdeen 4-0 St Mirren
Quote:
Lee Miller and Scott Severin both scored twice as Aberdeen avoided a Uefa Cup hangover by easing to victory over an insipid St Mirren.
Jeffrey de Visscher was pulled down by David Van Zanten after 43 minutes and Severin fired home the spot kick.
Miller pounced on a short pass-back by Will Haining to round goalkeeper Chris Smith and score after 63 minutes.
Severin's second penalty arrived after Smith fouled De Visscher then Miller slotted home in the dying seconds.
De Visscher and Miller had been handed starts in place of Chris Clark and Jamie Smith, who had picked up injuries as the Dons knocked Dnipro out of the Uefa Cup on Thursday.
And the two new faces combined to create the first chance of the match after six minutes.
Miller rose to meet a De Visscher corner but headed just over the crossbar.
Striker Miller squandered another chance when he mis-hit his shot from eight yards after being found by Barry Nicholson.
St Mirren grew in confidence, with Stewart Kean, given a start in place of Billy Mehmet, and Stephen O'Donnell both sending efforts towards the Dons goal without threatening goalkeeper Jamie Langfield.
But two moments of recklessness by Van Zanten resulted in the opening goal going the way of Aberdeen.
The right-back needlessly fouled Darren Mackie and then, when Severin clipped the resultant free-kick into the away side's 18-yard-box, Van Zanten bundled over De Visscher.
Scott Severin scored twice from the penalty spot
Severin took responsibility from the spot and coolly rolled his kick inside Smith's right-hand post as Smith dived the wrong way.
Midfielder Severin was first to threaten after the break, but his header from a corner and a long-range effort were held by Smith.
St Mirren were finding it difficult to create chances, although a drive from defender Franco Miranda flew just wide.
And Miller virtually made the points safe for the Dons when he grabbed the second goal.
Haining was short with a back-pass, the striker intercepted, put the ball through the goalkeeper's legs and chipped it home.
De Visscher won another penalty when he was challenged by Smith when through on goal after 71 minutes.
And Severin again sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.
With the Buddies looking deflated, Nicholson fired just wide.
And Miller pounced on a fine through ball from Jackie McNamara to produce a superb finish.

Aberdeen reaction to UEFA Cup draw
Quote:
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood said his side face four tough games after the draw was made for the Uefa Cup group stage in Nyone.
The Dons were drawn in Group B with Greek outfit Panathinaikos, Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow, Spanish giants Atletico Madrid and FC Copenhagen.
"It's very exciting. I was hoping we'd get the Russians at home and we have done," Calderwood said.
"Every one of them will be difficult games - our fans can enjoy Madrid."
The Dons will play two matches at home - against Lokomotiv Moscow and Copenhagen - and two away - opening their group campaign against Panathanaikos on 25 October then visiting Atletico Madrid.
Hopefully, there will be two great European nights at Pittodrie and we get six points
The top three teams form each group progress to the knock-out stages of the competition.
Calderwood was granted his wish to avoid Bayern Munich, Everton and Tottenham when the Dons were drawn from pot five at the ceremony at Uefa's headquarters in Switzerland.
"Hopefully, there will be two great European nights at Pittodrie and we get six points and a good chance of progression," he said.
The Aberdeen manager said he was optimistic about the Dons' chances of qualifying for the knock-out stage of the competition.
"I don't see why not," he said.
"We played a very good team in Dnipro who would not be out of place in pot one or pot two for this draw.
"We've got nothing to fear - we are the underdogs but we did it last time."
Aberdeen director of football Willie Miller said: "It's mouthwatering, but it's going to be tough.
"We're looking forward to great nights back at Pittodrie."
Miller, who captained the club to the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983, said of the draw: "I suppose it could've been a bit easier, but it also could've been harder.
"Jimmy and his team will be putting together a dossier on the sides and they are top sides, so it's going to be really difficult.
"It's great for everybody involved at the club. It's a fantastic achievement and everybody should take a bow for the work that they've put in."
Panathanaikos are currently third in the Greek league and played against Rangers in the Champions League four seasons ago, winning 3-1 at Ibrox.
Meanwhile, Danish champions Copenhagen inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Celtic in last season's Champions League and dropped into this year's Uefa cup after losing to Benfica in the third qualifying round.
Atletico Madrid and Lokomotiv Moscow are both lying sixth in their respective leagues.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aberdeen's Uefa Cup Group B Schedule
25 October (a) v Panathinaikos
8 November (h) v Lokomotiv Moscow
29 November (a) v Atletico Madrid
20 December (h) v Copenhagen

A very tough group for Aberdeen but just for them to be involved is a great boost for them. It will give them the opportunity to make some money in ticket sales and also gives them a chance to re-establish themselves in Europe.

Inverness 1-2 Aberdeen
Scottish Premier League
Sunday 21st October 07
Caledonian Stadium, Inverness
Quote:
Aberdeen geared up for a tricky Uefa Cup trip to Panathinaikos with victory at the Caledonian Stadium.
Derek Young set the Dons on course with a great run and confident finish after seven minutes with Aberdeen going on to command most of the first half.
Inverness fought back and Dennis Wyness headed his 100th goal for the club in the 57th minute.
However, Ross Tokely was out of luck with an own goal four minutes later to gift Aberdeen all three points.
Inverness went into the game looking for their first win against the Dons, with the famine stretching back over 13 matches spanning nine years.
Full-back Richard Hastings returned to the starting line-up but player-manager Craig Brewster did not make the squad to face his former side after being troubled by a shoulder problem.
Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood was forced into two changes with defenders Andrew Considine and Michael Hart losing their fitness battles.
Jackie McNamara and Lee Mair both returned after overcoming their own injury problems.
But the visitors were in the mood ahead of their trip to Athens and made a terrific start through Young.
The midfielder picked up possession just inside his own half before promptly powering down the left, and, upon reaching the penalty area, was given time to cut inside to rifle a shot under the luckless Malkowski.
It was a terrible error from the Polish goalkeeper and it gave Aberdeen a platform to dominate the proceedings, with Jeffery de Visscher in particular causing concern for the hosts.
Marius Niculae got the home side's first effort on target but Jamie Langfield comfortably held his 20-yard drive.
Zander Diamond headed over from the centre of the penalty area as the Pittodrie side searched for a second without further troubling Malkowski.
Caley Thistle pressed with Ian Black and Wyness both shooting over from the edge of the Aberdeen area with the hosts showing a tentative improvement.
The Dons suffered a blow just before the break when Scott Severin had to be replaced by Richie Byrne.
Inverness began brightly in the second half and, with Aberdeen looking a shade complacent, Wyness popped up with a well-taken leveller.
The striker made a good run across the six yard box to meet Richard Hastings' cross to glance a header beyond Jamie Langfield into the net.
The home fans elation only lasted four minutes though, as the Dons had defender Tokely to thank for putting them back ahead.
Tokely could only watch in agony as his attempt to clear De Visscher's whipped cross went into his own net from close range.
It was a blow for Caley Thistle and they found the Dons rearguard well-marshalled in the closing stages.
They nearly found a way through, though, when Russell Duncan struck a 79th minute volley only to see Langfield make a smart stop.
The Highlanders did have a penalty claim pushed aside when Jackie McNamara got away with a questionable push on Grant Munro in the penalty area, as Brewster elected to go for broke.
Nothing transpired, however, and Calderwood will now take his charges to Greece for what should be a massive test of Aberdeen's resolve.

Panathinaikos v Aberdeen UEFA Cup 26/10/07
Panathinaikos 3-0 Aberdeen
UEFA Cup Group B
Thursday 26th October
Athens, Greece
Quote:
Aberdeen were given a tough lesson in European football as they lost their first Uefa Cup Group B match to Panathinaikos in Athens.
Austrian midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz helped create all three goals after Chris Clark had seen an early Aberdeen shot clear the crossbar by inches.
Giannis Goumas headed the first for Panathinaikos on 10 minutes.
Dimitrios Papadopoulos provided the killer blow late on before Dimitris Salpigidis completed a comfortable win.
The result also means that a Scottish club has yet to win on Greek soil.
Clark, Scott Severin, Michael Hart and Andrew Considine overcame knocks to take their places in the Aberdeen team.
Darren Mackie missed out through injury, so Lee Miller started as the solitary striker in a 4-5-1 formation.
Panathinaikos coach Jose Peseiro rewarded weekend goalscorers Salpigidis and Ivanschitz with starting berths.
The Greeks forced a number of corners in the opening minutes, but it was Aberdeen who were first to threaten after five minutes.
Lee Miller and Barry Nicholson combined well to release Derek Young down the right.
Young raced to the byeline and picked out Clark who shot inches over from 12 yards.
However, it was the Greek side who took the lead following Ivanschitz's whipped-in free-kick from the right.
Captain Goumas met the ball with a glancing header across goal and into the far corner past Langfield.
The goal seemed to rock the Dons momentarily, as just six minutes later Langfield was called upon again.
Invanschitz tore into the box and cut the ball back for Senegalese striker Dame Ndoye, but Langfield pulled off an excellent save.
Aberdeen captain Severin was harshly cautioned when he won the ball cleanly in midfield from Ndoye, who was stretchered off in great distress.
But Ndoye recovered to win a free-kick after going past Considine, before appealing for his opponent to get booked.
Aberdeen regained their composure to finish the half well and Severin's shot from 25 yards was just too high.
Within a minute of the re-start, Zander Diamond did well to force Ndoye to shoot wide.
However, the Senegalese continued to frustrate by going to ground easily when challenged.
Nicholson was foiled after 55 minutes, when the ball was taken off his head as he dived to meet it six yards out.
The home side had a penalty claim waved aside when Salpigidis crumpled under Michael Hart's challenge.
But, with less than 20 minutes left, substitute Papadopoulos made the points safe for Panathinaikos after receiving a defence-splitting pass from Ivanschitz.
And, with the Greeks in full flow, Salpigidis made it three from close range after 77 minutes, when Langfield could only parry Ivanschitz's free-kick into the striker's path.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Panathinaikos: Malarz, Morris, Fyssas, Goumas, Mattos, Tziolis, Ivanschitz (Seric 81), Nilsson, Dimoutsos, Ndoye (Papadopoulos 59), Salpigidis (Mantzios 81).
Subs Not Used: Galinovic, Sarriegi, Romero, Vyntra.
Booked: Dimoutsos.
Goals: Goumas 10, Papadopoulos 73, Salpigidis 77.
Aberdeen: Langfield, Hart, McNamara (De Visscher 75), Diamond, Foster, Considine (Mair 61), Severin (Aluko 86), Nicholson, Clark, Miller, Young.
Subs Not Used: Kelly, Byrne, Lovell, Touzani.
Booked: Severin.

This was always going to be a tough game for Aberdeen. I fancy them to take some points in this group although I dont think they will be challenging in the last few games in the group. This european bid is all about making good money from revenue and also raising the profile of the club in europe again.
Its good to see Aberdeen back in europe considering the history they have. Im sure Jimmy Calderwood will give them a respectable run.

Aberdeen 1-1 Falkirk
Quote:
Aberdeen and Falkirk shared the spoils in a scrappy encounter at Pittodrie.
Scott Severin fired Aberdeen ahead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time after Darren Barr's hand-ball.
But the home side could not build any momentum after the interval and Patrick Cregg levelled on 67 minutes with a strike from 18 yards.
Prior to Falkirk's goal, Dons defender Jackie McNamara missed with a close- range header and Aberdeen striker Lee Miller stabbed wide late on.
The hosts looked lethargic after their midweek Uefa Cup defeat in Greece, while Falkirk will be happy to pick up a point on the road after a rocky first quarter of the season.
A dull first 30 minutes saw play bogged down in midfield, with the visitors looking the more comfortable in possession but neither goalkeeper involved at all.
The Dons eventually sparked into life when Barry Nicholson whipped a dangerous cross into the penalty area which Chris Clark was inches away from connecting with.
Soon after, Clark was presented with another opportunity and this time drew a good save from Tim Krul, who parried away a powerful shot from 20 yards.
Falkirk replaced Arnau Riera with Liam Craig and the visitors were forced into another first-half switch as Kenny Milne suffered what looked to be a serious injury.
Following extensive treatment, the defender was carried away on a stretcher after colliding with the wall of the Main Stand.
By the time Milne was carried away, Falkirk were a goal down, as Darren Barr was penalised for handling a cross from Zander Diamond.
Severin took responsibility from the spot and coolly sent Krul the wrong way to score.
Despite their lead, Aberdeen looked flat after the break and struggled to get forward in any numbers.
For the visitors, striker Graham Barrett looked lively, trying his luck with two shots on goal.
The first was a weak effort comfortably gathered by Jamie Langfield, before he capitalised on some slack play by Diamond to advance forward and blast a drive narrowly wide.
In the 66th minute, the hosts should have doubled their advantage when Nicholson's corner was headed wide by Jackie McNamara from no more than six yards out.
It was a bad miss and Aberdeen were soon made to pay for it as Falkirk fashioned an equaliser from a simple set-piece.
An in-swinging Scott Arfield free-kick was not sufficiently dealt with by the home defence and when the ball broke, Cregg took one touch before driving a shot into the bottom corner of Langfield's net.
Carl Finnigan came close to putting the Bairns in front but his shot went wide after a promising run.
On-loan teenager Sone Aluko, on as a substitute, was the brightest player in the closing stages and he set Miller up late in the game but the Aberdeen forward could not find the target.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aberdeen: Langfield, Hart, Diamond, McNamara, Foster, De Visscher (Aluko 61), Nicholson, Severin, Clark (Byrne 78), Miller, Young (Maguire 84). Subs Not Used: Kelly, Touzani, Daniel Smith, Jonathan Smith.

Barry Nicholson netted a hat-trick as Aberdeen brushed Inverness aside to reach the CIS Cup semi-finals.
Derek Young was hacked on nine minutes and Lee Miller was the victim of a bad tackle after 20 minutes, with Nicholson slotting away both penalty awards.
A blunder from keeper Michael Fraser then left Miller with an easy tap-in.
Graham Bayne replied with a 67th minute strike but Nicholson stroked in a close range effort to complete a good night for the home side.
