Surging Quakes meet Open Cup champs
San Jose, D.C. eye points in midst of tight playoff races

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs. D.C. UNITED
BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif.
Sept. 6, 2008 | 7 p.m. PT (CSN-W; CSN-DC)
WEEK # 24 | GAME # 159

Arguably the hottest team in MLS, the San Jose Earthquakes continue their productive home stretch by taking on D.C. United, crowned U.S. Open Cup champion at midweek. The Quakes are playing their fifth home games in the last six - and they have not been beaten over that period, winners of three in a row at Buck Shaw Stadium to pull into the heart of the MLS Cup Playoffs picture. United still own a playoff spot after last weekend, but are looking to build off their Open Cup win with a steady run to solidify their standing.

Defense key part of Quakes' streak

No MLS team has had a longer unbeaten streak this year than San Jose's current run of eight games, and while their offense has been getting plenty of the credit, the Earthquakes strong play on the defensive side of the ball has been just as critical to their climb toward a playoff spot.

San Jose Earthquakes have signed former Perugia midfielder Enrico Somma to a development contract.

Somma, who is an Italian citizen and also holds a US Green Card, so he is not counted as a foreigner in MLS, began his professional career with Perugia in 2004 and last played with Olbia Calcio in Italy's Lega Pro Seconda Divisione.

Quakes' Huckerby September's best
San Jose striker earns MLS Player of the Month Award

San Jose Earthquakes forward Darren Huckerby was voted MLS Player of the Month for September. He netted three goals and tallied one assist during the month and led the Earthquakes to a 1-1-1 record, while helping keep alive a nine-game unbeaten streak that lasted until the Quakes final game of the month. Huckerby and the San Jose Earthquakes (7-10-8) are vying to become the first expansion team to make the playoffs in 10 years.
