Streaking Quakes, Wizards collide
Two of MLS's hottest sides come together in San Jose

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES vs. KANSAS CITY WIZARDS
BUCK SHAW STADIUM, Santa Clara, Calif.
Aug. 30, 2008 | 7 p.m. PT (CSN-W; MetroSports)
WEEK # 23 | GAME # 152

Now with a place in the MLS Cup Playoffs in their expansion season firmly within their sights, the San Jose Earthquakes kick off a three-game homestand against the Kansas City Wizards in a huge match for both teams. The Quakes are still at the foot of the Western Conference, but third place and an automatic playoff spot is just four points away with nine games to play. The Wizards also need the full three points to pull themselves back into the hunt, sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with Toronto FC with third place some nine points away.

Quakes trying to replace Corrales
Yallop tabs Grabavoy to slot in behind Lima for injured midfielder

Things have been going so well lately for the San Jose Earthquakes, they've almost forgotten what adversity feels like. Owners of a six-game unbeaten streak, the Quakes and their revamped attack are poised to make what was heretofore unthinkable: a run at the playoffs.

Huckerby comfortable with Earthquakes
San Jose midfielder netted game-winning goal against KC

Throughout its brief history, MLS has been littered with foreign imports who either struggled to settle in, or never adapted at all. Six games into his MLS career, it's safe to say that San Jose Earthquakes' midfielder Darren Huckerby doesn't fall into either one of those categories.

The Englishman continued his brilliant start to his stateside adventure, scoring a priceless game-winning goal in San Jose's 2-1 win over Kansas City before 10,089 fans at Buck Shaw Stadium. It was Huckerby's third goal of the season, one that showed just how much belief there is within the team as the season heads into its stretch drive.

Quotes: SJ 2 KC 1

On the win:
"It was a good three points and an important time in the season to win. I thought we played well the first half, the first 20 minutes of the second was poor, we allowed Kansas City back into the game; but is great to come back and win the game in the end. It is a sign of a good team that sticks together and doesn't quit."

On team's confidence:
"We feel comfortable we can win. We have D.C. and then Houston which are two tough games, but we have confidence that we can win both. We have already played the best teams home and away and we have done ok. There is no guarantee that we are going to win every game but there is a guarantee that we are going to give everything we have and not quit and keep going."

On Darren Huckerby's performance:
"I think he is really enjoying his football to be honest. You look at him off the field and around the building and he is just flying. He just wants to get the ball because every time he gets the ball he feels like he can do something. He is going to go against anybody and beat them. He was great tonight. It is very exciting to watch him, I get on the edge of my seat when he gets the ball and I am coaching."

Huckerby continues Quakes' revival
Header in 83rd minute the difference as San Jose topples Kansas City

Two months ago, the San Jose Earthquakes were dead and buried. Saturday night against the Kansas City Wizards, they continued their resurrection, as Darren Huckerby's header with seven minutes remaining allowed the Quakes to claim a 2-1 victory and continue their push for a playoff spot.

An Arturo Alvarez header had given San Jose a 1-0 lead two minutes before halftime, only for the Wizards' Davy Arnaud to equalize courtesy of a Michael Harrington cross in the 64th minute. That merely set the stage for Huckerby's heroics, as the Englishman headed home Ryan Johnson's knockdown from close range to give the Quakes a priceless victory.

It's not been easy, but after 7 undefeated games in a row and a late goal by Huckerby tonight, the San Jose Earthquakes are finally not in the last position in the league's standings anymore!

For the first time this season, the Earthquakes were starting the game without Ramiro Corrales (knee sprain - View our season's stats). This would probably have been a huge handicap just 2 months ago, but Frank Yallop now has enough players on the bench. In this case he even had two solutions. The defensive one would have been Kelly Gray as a second defensive midfielder with Francisco Lima.

Playing at home and counting on Lima's ability to do the job himself, the San Jose coach chose a more offensive option with Ned Grabavoy. The two center midfielders did a great defensive job, but Grabavoy didn't have the expected offensive impact.

As usual since Darren Huckerby arrived in San Jose, the danger came mostly from the two british wingers, Ronnie O'Brien on the right and Huckerby on the left.

After a very good first 25 minutes, San Jose, seemed tired and let the Kansa City Wizards come back in the game. Between the 25th and the 40th minute the game was balanced. Both sides' defenses looked solid and controlled the few interesting offensive moves.

5 minutes before the end of the first half, the Quakes finally seemed decided to make a difference before the break and found some energy to accelerate their game. They immediately put the Wizard's defense in trouble and, after a couple of good chances, James Riley passed the ball to the right to Ronnie O'Brien who, with a perfect cross, found Arturo Alvarez' head at the six-yard line. Alvarez didn't miss the opportunity (1-0, 44th)

3 minutes earlier, Scott Sealy received a great ball from Huckerby and took a shot that Kevin Hartman (Kansas City's goalkeeper) could only stop with his chest. On the rebound, O'Brien's shot was deflected by a defender for a corner kick.

Overall, the Wizards were lucky to reach half time only one goal behind and the Earthquakes were going to regret the missed opportunities.

After the break, Kansas City seemed to be a totally different team. They controlled the game during 20 minutes, moving the ball very well and creating great chances. Only a solid defense and a great Joe Cannon delayed the event, but the visitors were going to score. It happened in the 64th minute, when Michael Harrington received the ball on his right wing and had all the time to control it and send a perfect cross into Davy Arnaud's run at the far post. Arnaud arrived right before Jason Hernandez could intercept the cross and pushed the ball into the net (1-1, 64th)

Probably as a consequence of their recent good streak of results and knowing that they could do much better than this, the local team, instead of sinking, took the control of the game again and, with a great determination, finished the game the same way they had started it.

With two pair of fresh legs (Ryan Johnson and Shea Salinas came in and were both involved in the winning goal) the Earthquakes shook the Kansas City's defense during 20 minutes and eventually were rewarded for their effort when Lima crossed from the left to Ryan Johnson at the far post. Johnson headed the ball towards the goal and Huckerby was there to push it in the back of net right before Hartman could catch it (2-1, 83rd)

Kansas City then desperately tried to send long balls in the Earthquakes' 18. Most of them were gifts to the Quakes' defenders or Joe Cannon. However, the visitors had one last chance to steal a point in the stoppage time: Roger Espinoza, alone in front of Joe Cannon, forced the goalkeeper to a miraculous save. Cannon could only deflect the shot into Chance Myers feet. With the goal open 5 yards in front of him, the Wizards' defender who replaced Michael Harrington one minute earlier totally missed his volley and wasted the last opportunity for his team.

With 25 points, the Earthquakes pass Colorado (24 points) and join the Galaxy in the 5th position in the Western Conference, just 1 point behind Dallas (26 points) and 2 behind Chivas (27)

After a friendly game against Seattle (USL-1 - Future MLS) next Tuesday at Buck Shaw, the Earthquakes receive DC United on September 6th at 7pm and the Houston Dynamo on September 13th at 7pm

Sounders top Quakes in friendly

The San Jose Earthquakes have been tough to beat lately, as evidenced by their seven-game unbeaten streak in league play. But on Tuesday night, the Seattle Sounders showed the rest of MLS how it's done, as Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar's goal five minutes from time gave the visitors a 2-1 win against the Quakes in a friendly at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Quakes reserves stay sharp

Friendly results have a funny way of sparking widely varying reactions from players and coaches. Witness Tuesday's match between the San Jose Earthquakes and the USL First Division's Seattle Sounders, one that finished with the visitors claiming a 2-1 victory against what is arguably MLS' hottest team.
