San Jose True Legend and First Hall of Famer
John Doyle
John Doyle (born April 16, 1966) is a retired U.S. soccer defender who played professionally in both the U.S. and Europe. He earned fifty-three caps with the U.S. national team between 1987 and 1994 including three games with the U.S. team at the 1988 Summer Olympics
Youth
Doyle attended Washington High School in Fremont, California where he played on the boy's soccer team. The team won the league championship Doyle's senior year. At the end of his senior year, he held the school's scoring record and had been named All League each year he played. Doyle also played soccer with the Fremont City youth soccer club where he was a four-time state champion. After high school, he attended the University of San Francisco where he played college soccer. He earned All American honors as a defender.
National team
In 1987, the U.S. Olympic team called in Doyle for a May 30, 1987 qualification match against Canada. The U.S. had lost 2-0 to Canada a week earlier and needed to win by that margin or greater to continue qualification. The team rose to the challenge and defeated Canada 3-0. Doyle continued to play with the Olympic team, including its three games at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. In those games, he scored a goal in the 4-2 loss to the Soviet Union. He would continue to play for the national team in 1989, when the U.S. began qualifaction for the 1990 FIFA World Cup
Western Soccer League
In 1989 and 1990, Doyle also played with the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks of the Western Soccer League (WSL) during the college soccer off-season. In 1989, he was named to the WSL All Star team. Europe
In 1990, he moved to Europe where he signed with Swedish club Örgryte IS.
In 1994, he played for German First Division club VfB Leipzig. Leipzig had won promotion to the First Division in 1993, but lasted only one year there, finishing last in 1994 and being demoted to the Second Division for the next season.
Return to the U.S.
With the demotion of Leipzig, Doyle signed with Major League Soccer (MLS). However, when the league delayed its first season to 1996, Doyle joined the Atlanta Ruckus of the A-League on loan from MLS for their inaugural season. The Ruckus developed their team around the team captain-Doyle led defense, which it rode to the league's championship game where the Ruckus lost to the Seattle Sounders. Doyle was selected to the league All Star team and was named the league Defender of the Year.
In order to ensure an initial equitable distribution of talent to each of the league's new teams, MLS allocated well known players. Doyle was allocated to the San Jose Clash. At the end of the A-League season, Doyle moved back to the Bay Area, becoming the first player, and first team captain, in the Clash's history in 1996. He was then named MLS's first Defender of the Year. John scored 11 goals and 15 assists in his time in the league.
Post playing career
After his retirement from the Earthquakes, John worked as TV and radio color commentator for the Earthquakes. In 2004 he was hired as assistant coach for the Quakes, replacing Dominic Kinnear who was promoted as head coach after Frank Yallop's departure to coach the Canadian national team. He stayed on with the Quakes until the franchise was relocated to Houston for the 2006 season.
Inducted into the University of San Francisco Hall of Fame in 1999.

While Wynalda scored the first goal in MLS history, he and Colloway were soon at each other's throats. The tensions on the team led eventually led to a locker room brawl between Wynalda and John Doyle. On top of that was an infamous incident in which Wynalda hired an aircraft towing a banner demanding the Clash fire Calloway.[1] While the Clash made the postseason in the inaugural 1996 MLS season, and Doyle earned recognition as the best MLS defender, the team floundered in 1997. Part of the problems stemmed from the disruption caused by the feud between Wynalda and Calloway. Others stemmed from poor player acquisitions and Calloway's constantly shuffling line ups. For example, following the 1996 season, the Clash traded away their leading scorer, Paul Bravo, and were unable to resign their third leading scorer, Missael Espinosa. The team also chased marginal foreign players such as Jorge Rodas. By the middle of the 1997 season, the team was sinking fast and Bridgwater fired Calloway, to be replaced by Brian Quinn.

July 19 Player of the Day
Jeff Agoos
Jeffrey ("Jeff") Alan Agoos (born May 2, 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland) is a former American soccer defender, and one of the all-time appearance leaders for the United States national team.
Agoos (nicknamed Goose), was born in Switzerland, when his father, who was a U.S. diplomat, was posted there. However, he was raised in Texas, and has won a record five MLS championships as a player: three with DC United (for whom he played from 1996 to 2000) and two with the San Jose Earthquakes (2001-2004).
High School
Agoos attended J.J. Pearce High School in Richardson, Texas. He was named a two-time Parade Magazine High School All-American as well as a Dallas All-Sports Athlete-of-the-Year. He led his team to the 1983 Texas State Championship
Collegiate career
From 1986 to 1990, Agoos played soccer for Bruce Arena at the University of Virginia. During his four seasons with the Caveliers, earned First-Team All-American honors twice, in 1988 and 1990. He finished second in Hermann Award voting his senior season.
In 1989, His junior year, Virginia went to the NCAA championship game where it fought the University of Santa Clara to a 1-1 draw after 4 overtimes. While the teams wanted to continue to play, NCAA officials ended the game and declared the two teams co-champions. At the time there were no penalty kicks to end a tie.
Initial Professional Career
Upon graduating from college, Agoos played for the Maryland Bays of the A-League in 1991. On February 13, 1991, the Dallas Sidekicks of the Major Indoor Soccer League drafted Agoos with the second overall pick of the 1991 draft. He played in thirty games in the 1991-1992 season, scoring seven goals. In 1992, he left the Sidekicks to play full time for the U.S. national team, but Dallas again selected him in a draft, this time the 1993 Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL) draft, but he did not re-sign with the team.
Move to Germany
After being cut from the U.S. roster for the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Agoos moved to Germany, where he played for SV Wehen during the 1994-95 season.
Major League Soccer
After returning from Germany in 1995, he served as an assistant coach to Bruce Arena at the University of Virginia.
In 1996, Agoos returned to the United States to join Major League Soccer MLS. In order to create a league, MLS allocated various recognized players to each team. As part of this process, the league allocated Agoos to DC United where he joined Bruce Arena, the team's first coach. That year, Agoos won the first MLS Championship as well as the U.S. Open Cup. He followed it up the next year with his second MLS Championship. In 1998, DC United achieved its greatest accomplishment when it defeated Vasco de Gama to take the Interamerican Cup and won his third MLS Championship. He spent 2001 through 2004 | | | |
