Roma line up Benayoun bid Saturday 2 August, 2008

While Luciano Spalletti draws up the signing he wants this summer, it is reported that Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun fits the bill.

“We are looking for someone very physical who can play as a wide striker,” explained the Roma Coach.


“Everyone likes David Silva, but he is too expensive. Lukas Podolski is an excellent player, but would not fit into our style of play.


“Florent Malouda and Julio Baptista would be good choices, but their future depends on how other transfer deals go.”


The Giallorossi are waiting to see if Real Madrid sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, which would release Baptista. Malouda could go if Real then hand Robinho over to Chelsea.


Meanwhile, Sky Sports claim that Roma are looking at Benayoun as an alternative should these scenarios drag on too long.


The Israeli international has been linked with several different sides, including Manchester City and West Ham United.


The 28-year-old could be released by Liverpool so that they can put together more cash for their Gareth Barry bid.


Roma are in action tonight with a friendly against Monaco.

Suazo "open" to Roma move Sunday 3 August, 2008

David Suazo’s agent has “opened the door” to a transfer to Inter’s rivals Roma this summer.

It is well known that the Giallorossi are seeking reinforcements in attack, especially since selling Amantino Mancini to Inter.


“For the moment David has a contract with Inter for the next three years,” said agent Giovanni Branchini.


“However, I am not going to close the door on Roma.”


The Honduran hitman is being pushed down the pecking order with the arrival of Mancini and Adriano.


He could be looking for a new challenge just 12 months after making the move from Cagliari and Roma would suit his fast-paced style of play.


“There are several players who I think would be leaving Inter before Suazo, as he is not linked with a transfer. At least not for now…” concluded the agent.


Meanwhile, Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has confirmed there was some interest from Roma, but that the price-tag and wage cap provided an insurmountable obstacle

Spalletti hopes for new faces Monday 4 August, 2008

Luciano Spalletti concedes that his Roma squad is two players short but is happy with the development of Mirko Vucinic and Stefano Chuka Okaka.

The Giallorossi were beaten by Romanian champions Steaua Bucharest in their first pre-season friendly but they improved with a 0-0 draw against Monaco.

“I’m satisfied with the two weeks of work,” Spalletti insisted.

“We improved in Montecarlo and we played the kind of football that is our great resource. After three seasons we played from memory.”

Montenegrin forward Vucinic impressed playing as a wide man and Spalletti sees him as an important figure in the upcoming campaign.

“Vucinic can play in two roles,” the Lupi tactician explained.

“He can be powerful as a winger as he can make runs and cut into the centre.

“As a forward he looks for goal and makes space for his teammates and he created the missed chances for Vincenzo Montella.”

However, Spalletti still hopes for new recruits to add to his squad ahead of next season’s Scudetto push.

“The fact that I am using Vucinic on the wing doesn’t mean that we don’t need alternatives – we could do with a player for the left,” he said.

“Two signings would complete the squad numerically and would also limit our weaknesses.

“We also have a problem on the right in that if Rodrigo Taddei is out we have a problem.”

Spalletti prevented young striker Okaka from joining Bologna on loan this summer in order to keep him at his disposal.

“He doesn’t always take the chances that he creates with his physical strength but I think he can improve on a technical level,” Spalletti stressed.

“Gabriel Batistuta used to train an extra half an hour per day at Fiorentina to improve his touch.”

Inspirational captain Francesco Totti is still recovering from a knee ligament injury he sustained against Livorno in April.

“We are trying to get Totti back to training with a ball and we are keeping him away from tackles,” Spalletti revealed.

“I hope he will be back for the Super Cup on August 24, but I won’t make any predictions.”

Baptista hopes for Roma deal Tuesday 5 August, 2008

Brazilian striker Julio Baptista would welcome a move from Real Madrid to Roma but the two sides are yet to agree a fee.

Roma are desperately seeking a striker after missing out on Adrian Mutu and their principal target now seems to be Baptista.

The man known as ‘The Beast’ has been frozen out of first-team plans at the Bernabeu under Bernd Schuster and is keen to join the Giallorossi, but the transfer needs to be rubber stamped by both clubs.

“Julio isn’t happy in Madrid,” agent Herminio Menendez told Centro Suono Sport. “He is looking for regular games because he is a Brazilian international.

“I can’t put a percentage on the chances of him moving to Roma – there is a good chance but it doesn’t just depend on the player.

“Julio is very keen on the Lupi and if a deal can be agreed by all parties then he would be happy.

“But the situation is that Roma and Real have to talk now and see if they can come to an arrangement.”

The two sides are expected to hold talks this afternoon in the hope of making a breakthrough.

Roma name Menez, Benayoun as transfer targets

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has revealed his side are still looking for two reinforcements this summer, with Jeremy Menez of Monaco and Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun mentioned as targets.

Roma, who finished second behind Internazionale last season in Serie A, are looking for replacements for Brazilian winger Mancini and Ludovic Giuly.

Mancini has joined Inter while Giuly returned to France with Paris St Germain.

However, as yet Roma have been slow to move in the transfer market, with only former Liverpool left-back John Arne Riise arriving.

But Spalletti insists his staff are looking at possible targets.

'There will be two new signings,' the 49-year-old coach told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.

'The names? They're the names you've heard. Menez and Benayoun are both top class players.

'Menez is strong, and he's done some things during this past season.'

Spalletti also revealed his aim is to provide competition for places.

'We need two players for each position,' he continued.

'When there's less pressure on the coach, he should know when the right moment is to change players.'
