Roma set to snare Beast Friday 18 July, 2008

Roma are close to agreeing a deal for Real Madrid man Julio Baptista, while Ludovic Giuly is closing in on PSG.

The Giallorossi are looking for a new striker and have seen advances for Adrian Mutu, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Antonio Di Natale rebuffed.

It now seems that they will complete a swoop for Brazilian ace Julio Baptista, who is unsettled at Real Madrid.

Talks with the Merengues are progressing as Coach Bernd Schuster has made it clear that ‘The Beast’ doesn’t feature in his plans.

Real have put a £12m price tag on Baptista – nearly £4m less than they paid Sevilla for him in the summer of 2005.

Agent Herminio Menendez is in China on business at the moment, but it is believed that Baptista is demanding the same wage that he commanded in Spain – around £1.6m per year.

This equates to a greater sum in Italy due to the higher rate of tax, but it should fall within the capital club’s parameters.

However, with French winger Giuly set to quit the club, the Lupi are looking for two new players and may be reluctant to spend their entire budget on one man.

Sources suggest that they may propose paying £2.3m to take Baptista on loan for the year with an option to buy him permanently for £8m in the summer of 2009.

The extra money that Real are demanding may be paid in instalments on the condition that Roma qualify for the Champions League over the next two seasons.

A similar deal was successfully agreed for the signature of Brazilian defender Cicinho from Real last summer.

Reports suggest that Giuly could complete his switch to Ligue 1 underachievers PSG within the next 24 hours.

bench??come on man he is good for a starting spot, compared to what we have on the bench and on the field(bar totti in his position) having him is way much better.

Santana invites Roma offer Saturday 19 July, 2008

Mario Alberto Santana’s agent admits it would be “difficult to turn down Roma” if an offer were to come in.

The Fiorentina winger has been linked with the Giallorossi and today his representative confirmed it would be a dream come true.


“It is difficult to turn down Roma,” Marco Piccoli told romanews.eu. “It depends on Fiorentina as well.


“They consider Santana to be a firm fixture, but faced with an important offer, any player can go on the market.


“Roma like Santana, but for the moment there hasn’t been a formal offer. He belongs to Fiorentina and is happy here.


“There has been talk during this transfer period, but without a concrete proposal as yet.”


Roma are looking for reinforcements and have looked at Atletico Madrid man Jose Antonio Reyes, but Santana would be a cheaper alternative already tested in Serie A.


Meanwhile, Fiorentina are also preparing to sell Manuel Pasqual to Napoli.

Roma transfer guru Daniele Pradè is in Madrid to secure both Julio Baptista and Jose Antonio Reyes.

According to reports emanating from Spain this afternoon, the director of sport has flown out to complete a surprise double deal.


Their interest for Real Madrid man Baptista is well known and newspapers in the Spanish city claim a transfer could be sealed within the weekend.


However, the latest news suggests Pradè is also visiting the other Liga side, Atletico Madrid, to swoop for another former Arsenal player.


Reyes is considered an outcast at the club and Coach Javier Aguirre has pushed the 24-year-old to the sidelines.


His style would suit Roma’s 4-2-3-1 system and provide the second star name demanded by captain Francesco Totti to keep the side competitive.


Curiously, it is not the first time Reyes and Baptista have been connected, as they exchanged loan spells between Arsenal and Real Madrid in 2006-07.


Reyes made the move to Atletico Madrid in July 2007 for approximately £8.1m, but failed to score a single goal in 26 Liga games.


Meanwhile, the Giallorossi’s interest in Luis Fabiano has dissipated after Marca reported he had agreed to sign a contract extension for another three seasons with Sevilla.
