Philippe Mexes will become a Roma player just as soon as a transfer fee is agreed with Auxerre.

The defender has been linked with numerous sides across Europe but his agent insists he’s on the verge of joining the Giallorossi.

"Roma have offered Philippe an interesting sporting proposition," his agent Olivier Jouanneaux told BBC Sport.

"There is a four-year deal on the table and we're now just waiting for Roma to reach an agreement with Auxerre."

The French club seem set to lose the 22-year-old and have already signed Rene Bolf from Banik Ostrava to replace him.

Although Mexes was wanted by former Roma boss Fabio Capello, the player seems keen to link up with new man Cesare Prandelli.

"Philippe wants to play under a Coach with a strong personality who will help him become a regular in the French national team," added Jouanneaux.

Mexes, who has six caps to his name, just missed out on making the Euro 2004 squad. He should cost around £5m.

The stopper, also linked with Liverpool and Manchester United, has been targeted by the Italians after Walter Samuel joined Real Madrid.

Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes is set to move to Roma on a four-year contract after turning down Manchester United.
Coach Guy Roux revealed earlier this week that United had made an offer of around £9.9million for the 22-year-old, but the player is keen to move to the Serie A club.

Mexes' agent Olivier Jouanneaux said: 'We have met (Roma sporting director) Franco Baldini and a four-year contract has been agreed between Mexes and Roma.'

You got your man.

Mexes joined Roma because he does not like English football. He believes the it is too demanding physically.

Wait until he plays his first game in Serie A. I could of sworn Owen say the same thing about Italy.

Juventus have opened official negotiations with Roma for Emerson, while Philippe Mexes is at the centre of a contract battle.

It was reported that Bianconeri transfer guru Luciano Moggi met with Roma's Director of Sport Franco Baldini late last night to discuss Emerson's future.

The Brazilian has long been in agreement with the Turin side, but his current club had threatened to leave him on the bench rather than sell him to their arch rivals.

However, after he rejected a £12m move to Real Madrid and began legal proceedings to sue Roma for unpaid wages, it seems as if Baldini has caved in.

The Giallorossi have other matters on their mind, as several news services also revealed that they had signed a contract with Philippe Mexes and registered it with the Italian FA.

The defender is still tied to Auxerre for another two seasons, but he is locked in a legal battle with the French side over his buy-out clause.

According to Mexes he can walk away for as little as £3.5m, but Auxerre have made it clear they won't release him for less than £5m. The player has now sent an official letter warning the side he won't turn up for pre-season training.

FIFA are set to convene a tribunal of arbitration in order to rule on this on-going disagreement, so Roma are forced to wait until that verdict is delivered.

Owen would do well in Seria A, he always gives Italian defenders problems with his pace and intelligent runs.

Mexes is a good signing for Roma, if they get Ferrari to go with himself and Chivu, they'll have a great defense.
