Out of contract midfielder Damiano Tommasi is on the verge of joining Levante, the Spanish club have claimed.

The likeable player quit Roma last night after spending the last decade in the capital and he seems set to join the newly promoted Liga outfit.

“We’ve always liked Tommasi’s personality,” stated Levante President Don Pedro Villarroel on Tuesday.

“He’s famous for his honesty and technical ability. He suffered a serious injury two years ago, but proved last term that he is back to his best.”

It’s understood that the former Azzurri international could fly into Spain this evening for a medical before signing a contract.

Some whispers in Italy had suggested that he may have opted to hang up his boots and join the Italian Football Federation alongside former player Demetrio Albertini.

y is he leaving? seems a bit odd that a player who was willing to take a massive pay cut because he loved the club so much would leave, especially after being there a decade.

I thin k he's done all he can for the club and after 10 years fancied a less stressful environment to finish on.

I cannot underline enough what a great guy tommassi is.

I know, Tommassi, Del Piero, Maldini, etc, are all a dying breed in terms of attitude, class, and loyality to a club.

“I’ve opted for a change to re-find that passion and my smile. My decision has nothing to do with any proposals, negotiations or offers.”

thats why he's leaving...sad that our club couldnt even offer him a pay raise just for serving so long and well. we all know his influence in the locker rooms and off the field. great player. even in his prime he was regarded as one of the best.

I wouldn't say key players in the sense of now he's gone we'll fall apart but as a character yes, and also 'historically' speaking.
I'll miss his curly hair

Exclamation Official - Pizarro joins Roma

Quote:
It is now official – David Pizarro has joined Roma in a co-ownership deal, putting pen to paper on a four-year contract.

This had been one of the most protracted transfer moves of the summer, as the Inter midfielder at first seemed ready for the final details, then pulled out on Friday after reportedly rejecting the wage offer.

However, last night the Chilean put through a call to Coach Luciano Spalletti and this morning he flew back to Rome from Mallorca, where Inter are preparing for a friendly match.

Late this evening the two clubs officially announced that Pizarro has joined Roma in a co-ownership deal worth £4.7m and put pen to paper on a four-year contract worth £1.2m per season.

The Giallorossi also announced that they have loaned Alessio Cerci to Serie B outfit Brescia with an option to buy for £170,000.

Pizarro explains Roma choice
Sunday 20 August, 2006
David Pizarro explains why he changed his mind about joining Roma, but Coach Luciano Spalletti warns he’s not enough to make them competitive.

“It’s not easy to leave a club like Inter and Roberto Mancini tried to keep me, but the passion of the Sensi family convinced me to come here,” said the former Nerazzurri midfielder.

The £4m co-ownership deal had originally been struck earlier this week, only to sensationally collapse on Friday in an apparent dispute over wages.

Pizarro changed his mind again overnight and flew back to Rome from Spain – where Inter had been preparing for a friendly match – to finalise a four-year contract.

The Chilean could make his debut against his former teammates, as Roma take on Inter in the Italian Super Cup on August 26 at San Siro.

“I don’t know if I’ll be ready in time for the Super Cup, but I want to be there. If Roma can maintain the team spirit they showed last season, then they can be competitive for the Scudetto.”

Pizarro was in the stands for a 0-0 friendly tie against Real Zaragoza on Saturday night, but Coach Spalletti wasn’t going to get swept up by the enthusiasm of the new arrival.

“To be on a par with Inter and Milan, we need many signings and they’d have to be expensive. This transfer doesn’t change our ambitions for this term,” warned the tactician.

“Pizarro has come and can give us a great helping hand, as he has characteristics our team needs. He had said he wasn’t going to move, then called to tell us he had changed his mind. It took some good sense from the club to lay out the money so we could bring him here.”

Roma midfield is looking very good now, they will be tough to fend off now. Good luck to Pizarro and his future.

Good deal all around.

I'm not so sure it was a good dfeal. It's a lot of money for co-ownership (who we won't be able to outbid at auction) and the player doesn't seem THAT keen on playing for us.

Add to that that we're in greater need of a striker and it may be that Pizarro was a waste of money.
