Goalkeeper Christian Abbiati has moved a step closer to joining Roma for the 2006-07 season, according to reports.

Abbiati is currently on loan at Juventus from Milan but whispers in Italy on Tuesday suggest that he will sign for the Giallorossi at the end of this campaign.

Roma are evaluating the Abbiati path given the contract problems concerning current No 1 Alexander Doni.

The Brazilian’s present agreement expires in June and there is still some difference between his new wage demands and what the club are prepared to offer.

A split now seems to be on the cards with other speculation claiming that Doni is on the verge of joining Barcelona.

As a result, Abbiati is wanted by the capital club given the likelihood that he won’t be staying with the Rossoneri once he returns to the San Siro in the summer.

Milan are said to be prepared to offer him to Roma on loan in exchange for the loan of shot-stopper Ivan Pelizzoli, who has spent this term at Reggina.

Abbiati did return to his high levels of the past this term after he was snapped up by Juventus following an injury to Gigi Buffon.

Although Abbiati has now returned to the bench, he did greatly impress for the six months or so in which he was handed the first-choice gloves.

Real Madrid are the latest club to join the queue of sides wanting to sign Roma defender Cristian Chivu, according to reports.

The Spanish giants are looking to refresh their defensive options and Chivu is apparently at the top of their wish list.

Real are understood to be massive fans of the Romanian’s versatility given that he can play both as a centre-back and also as a left-back.

The Stadio Bernabeu outfit, who look likely to miss out again on La Liga to Barcelona this term, are ready to offer Roma a bid of around £14m.

Chivu is tied to the capital club until June 2008 and the Giallorossi have often insisted that the former Ajax man will not be sold.

However, Chivu continues to be linked with a variety of clubs which could spark a profitable bidding war for the stopper.

Barcelona have been monitoring him for some time with reports suggesting that he is their primary transfer target behind Arsenal’s Thierry Henry this summer.

Chivu also has fans in Italian football with the big three all being associated with a swoop in the past.

The Nerazzurri have often rued their decision to not sign him when he was poached by Roma from the Dutch League, while Juve boss Fabio Capello is an admirer after he coached him at the Olimpico.

Neither Roma nor the player have yet to respond to today’s latest whispers surrounding his future.

If Gallas goes....which I doubt as much as you doubt Chivu leaving....I wouldn't be surprised if we went after Chivu...we would probably go after Chivu and PSV's Alex.

Roma surely wouldn't turn down 15 million.

yes we would...chivu and mexes together have been outstanding to say the least. besides we are debt free plus a huge cash injection on the way. not to mention a 26 mill profit a few months ago. i say keep him and by a lb ( sorry cufre ) a creative centre midfielder and a new left winger. taddie is beyond average. i would personally leave totti as the lone hit man ( even though he gets brutally fouled game after game in that position ).

Leaving Totti as a lone striker is not the way to go or the way things will go...it limits his attacking potential and the team would be better off with Totti orchestrating things, making goals for another player and using the space the striker creates to play in.

A striker should be the first priority.....then astrong, hard-tackling ballwinner in midfield (if De Rossi isn't going to be that) ....Then someone better than Taddei.

our 11 game win streak ( well totti was with us through 10 of the 11 ) showed that the team was deadly on the attack. personally i want him to stay up there. i know it wont happen and roma will probably buy vucinic or iaquinta. plus i truly believe de rossi needs a tough partner in the center midfield position. aquilani is good moving up but seems very soft when trying to mark someone or tackle them. but he will improve and is very young so i dont mind if he takes a little time to find his defensive game. i really think we should go for a left back after we get a striker. we've gotten lovely crosses from pannuci down the right. i would love to see some nice crosses going down the left side as well.

If roma can convince chivu that they have big plans for the future then they will convince him to stay. He seems pretty loyal.

Roma opens their piggy bank again this summer and no doubt they will be buyers with a few minor sales, but chivu and mancini should be back.

Doni has signed, or is going to sign a new deal do I don't know where that leaves the abbiati situation.

Damiano Tommasi has announced his separation from Roma after spending the last decade with the club.

The likeable midfielder has this evening left the outfit after his contract at the Stadio Olimpico came to an end.

“After 10 years in Rome and after 10 years with Roma, I’ve decided for a change,” the player wrote in a statement.

“It’s not easy for me to find the words necessary to express what this step signifies for me,” he continued.

“I’ve opted for a change to re-find that passion and my smile. My decision has nothing to do with any proposals, negotiations or offers.”

Tommasi insists that he is unclear of where he will be playing his football next season even if he has been linked with a return to former club Verona.

“I still don’t know what my professional future holds for me,” he stated. “My objective is to find a place which can give me a new spirit and the energy I need to kick a football.”

Tommasi, who is also of interest to foreign clubs, ends his Giallorossi stint with 14 goals in 263 League games.

The 32-year-old joined Roma in 1996 and was part of the 2000-01 Scudetto winning squad. His departure now only leaves Vincenzo Montella and Francesco Totti as title survivors in Rome.

Tommasi also hit the headlines last term when he signed a minimum wage contract with Roma, worth just over £1,000 a month, after missing a year of the game with knee ligament damage.

great man....always gave 100% in the locker rooms and on the field. definatly a big reason why we got 11 wins in a row. always has the great energy. ill miss him. and then there were 2 ......( reffering to montella and totti left from the scudetto year ).
