Totti’s month of misery

Roma captain Francesco Totti is expected to return to action one month after he limped off against Sporting Lisbon.

Er Pupone has missed out on games against Milan, Lazio and Lisbon since picking up an ankle injury on October 23.

The Giallorossi No 10 had hoped to return within a fortnight, but he has spent longer than expected on the treatment table.

Totti won’t be back in action until November 24 when Roma travel to Sampdoria after the international break.

Left-back Max Tonetto is also facing a spell out of action after reporting a calf problem following yesterday’s Estadio Alvalade encounter.

Christian Panucci and Rodrigo Taddei return to the squad for the weekend’s clash against Cagliari after shaking off injuries of their own.

Totti’s injury woes continue Thursday 22 November, 2007

Francesco Totti’s chances of returning to action against Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris this weekend look slim.

Er Pupone has been out of action since sustaining an ankle injury in the October 23 Champions League clash against Sporting Lisbon.

The Roma talisman has been frustrated to see his return date pushed back and missed out on key games against Lazio, Milan and the away game in Lisbon.

Just as Totti’s ankle seemed to have recovered, he was hit by a bout of bronchitis that saw him leave training after just 20 minutes yesterday.

Now, he has been dealt another blow after striking the floor while taking set-pieces this morning and reporting a pain in his heel.

A decision will made tomorrow morning on whether Totti will travel to Genoa.

Meanwhile, Alberto Aquilani is set to stay at Trigoria due to his thigh injury, but Brazilian winger Rodrigo Taddei is back in action.

Mexes joins Roma injury list Friday 23 November, 2007

Philippe Mexes has joined the injury list, while Roma complain about their players picking up injuries on international duty.

The Frenchman had originally been included in the squad going to Marassi for Saturday’s Serie A game, but later pulled out due to a slight head trauma.

A statement on the official club website explained the tests “did not give the results we had hoped for” and it was decided he should be left at home to recuperate “as a precautionary measure.”

It is the latest setback for the Giallorossi, who have also lost Simone Perrotta and possibly Daniele De Rossi following injuries picked up on international duty this week.

Francesco Totti is also out of action as he has still not recovered from a badly bruised ankle sustained in the 2-1 Champions League win over Sporting Lisbon, while Rodrigo Taddei and Alberto Aquilani have not made the trip.

The problems suffered by Perrotta and De Rossi while playing in Italy’s 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands has infuriated director Bruno Conti.

“It is an honour for us to have four players in the Italy squad, but we were not happy to see two of them play from start to finish,” said the 1982 World Cup winner.

“We expected them to come off earlier, preferably at half-time. The result in Modena was irrelevant to qualifying, while we have a Serie A match on Saturday.

“We would prefer a different treatment of our players in the Nazionale. We have never complained before and will not do so now out of respect for the Azzurri and Roberto Donadoni, but in this case we expected more protection.”

Aquilani recovers, Totti struggles Tuesday 18 December, 2007

Roma midfield starlet Alberto Aquilani is ready to return from a long-term thigh injury, but there’s less encouraging news for Francesco Totti.

Aquilani has been out of action since limping off during the Giallorossi’s Champions League defeat against Manchester United on October 2.

The injury halted a glittering start to the campaign, which saw Aquilani hit two sensational long-range goals in the opening two games.

After an agonising period on the sidelines, the 23-year-old has returned to training and could feature in Wednesday’s Coppa Italia last 16 tie against Torino.

However, as one key figure prepares to return to the field, another has suffered an injury setback.

Inspirational captain Totti looks set to miss out on the capital club’s final games of 2007 after reporting pain in his ankle.

Er Pupone had returned to action with the aid of a special boot to protect his damaged foot, but it seems that he hasn’t yet healed completely.

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti may now opt to send Totti away for an early Christmas break and hope that he is at 100 per cent for the first game of 2008 away to Atalanta on January 13.

Roma face a defensive crisis as Juan has joined Matteo Ferrari on the sidelines while Christian Panucci is suspended.

The Giallorossi welcomed long-term absentee Marco Andreolli back to action yesterday, but Ferrari’s recovery from an ankle problem is taking longer than expected.

With Panucci banned, things have worsened today with the news that Brazilian star Juan could be out of action for as long as a month.

Juan will certainly miss the game against Catania after damaging his foot during training and Luciano Spalletti faces an anxious wait to see the extent of the damage.

It is possible that Ferrari will be rushed back into the side at the Stadio Olimpico this weekend to face the Elefanti against medical advice.

Spalletti turns Florence Nightingale Sunday 20 January, 2008

Luciano Spalletti is struggling with a flu epidemic that has struck the Roma squad, including Francesco Totti.

“The flu has gone through the locker room, some got it early and some later on,” explained the Coach.

“Rodrigo Taddei had the symptoms on Friday and is only able to do light training, while Simone Perrotta is starting to develop them. Matteo Ferrari is alright and could train normally.”

Totti has been hit so hard by this virus that he was ruled out of today’s match with Catania, when he was meant to receive a special prize marking his 200 official goals for the club.

“We can only compliment Totti for the contribution he has given to this side. Unfortunately he won’t be able to play, but we have won without him and will do so again.”

This gives Mirko Vucinic the starting spot upfront, but he needs to improve after he was jeered off the field in the Coppa Italia midweek.

“I joked with him about Wednesday’s performance, but he is not relaxed,” confessed Spalletti.

“A fortnight ago people wanted to force me to play him alongside Totti, now he is jeered. Vucinic is a great player and he just needs time to hit form.

“Catania will pose a tough test for us, as they are doing very well at the moment. They eliminated Milan from the Coppa Italia and only failed to beat Juventus because of a ‘dubious’ penalty.”

Roma cannot afford to slip up, as they are still seven points adrift of Serie A leaders Inter.

“It is difficult to catch them, but our intentions have not been affected. The gap must also act as motivation to improve.”

Totti to miss Man Utd Sunday 30 March, 2008

Francesco Totti is out of Roma’s quarter-final with Manchester United – and possibly the second leg too – with a thigh strain.


The captain had been struggling with a recurring knee problem this month and played in the 1-1 draw against Cagliari on Saturday with strapping to the area.


However, he was spotted clutching the back of his left thigh several times, although he continued to play until the final whistle.


The club has confirmed Totti has been diagnosed with a muscular strain and is out of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with United.


If the extent of the injury is confirmed, there is the possibility he could also be ruled out of the second leg at Old Trafford on April 9.


It is also a heavy blow for the Giallorossi’s Scudetto ambitions, as they are still four points behind Inter.


Meanwhile, the referee for the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico has been assigned by UEFA.


It is Belgian Frank De Bleeckere, the same official who sent off Marco Materazzi for two very harsh bookings in the first leg of Inter’s tie with Liverpool

Exactly what I Was thinking Duke.All the Team is thinking about is short term success.This is really disheartening to hear that Totti is breaking down.IN the past 3 seasons he's had his first major injury and he's starting to not play to his standard.We're really draining him.

Francesco Totti will miss Roma’s game against Genoa this weekend and he faces a race to recover for the Manchester United return leg.

The captain was sorely missed in last night’s Champions League quarter-final first leg and has been sidelined on and off for the last month with an ankle injury.

It had been assumed that Er Pupone would return this Saturday for the Giallorossi’s must-win clash against Genoa, but it has now been confirmed that he will miss out.

Totti only managed to undergo a light session away from the rest of the squad today and there are fears that his problem won’t clear before the return game with Manchester United on Wednesday, April 9.

Juan will also miss the test against the Rossoblu, but Simone Perrotta is ready to return and Cicinho and Ludovic Giuly are likely to start.

better safe him for the title run in.i want roma to go far in the cl but if even we did mange to get pass united i dont think we have squad or depth to face the likes of a full strength barca.

Aquilani injury scare Thursday 3 April, 2008

Roma’s week went from bad to worse with news Alberto Aquilani could miss this weekend’s match against Genoa.


The midfielder has been dogged by injuries over the past couple of years and had only recently made his comeback.


He played in the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Manchester United on Tuesday and pulled up during training today with pain to his right ankle and foot.


This means Aquilani’s presence against Genoa this weekend is in real doubt, adding to Francesco Totti’s likely absence with a thigh strain and the suspended David Pizarro.


Matteo Ferrari will undergo extensive tests this week to confirm the extent of his injury.


Mirko Vucinic also rested today due to a knee problem, but it is not thought to be serious and should clear up within 24 hours

While Juan is fit to face Genoa, Francesco Totti hopes he can recover in time for the second leg at Old Trafford.


Both players missed the 2-0 home defeat in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester United on Tuesday along with the suspended Simone Perrotta.


Brazilian defender Juan has recovered quicker than expected and is in the Roma squad set to take on Genoa on Saturday.


Totti has been struggling with a thigh strain, but was asked today whether he would be ready for next week’s clash.


“I don’t know. I hope to make it,” the captain told fans waiting outside the Trigoria training ground.


There is no chance of seeing Matteo Ferrari at Old Trafford, as he underwent surgery to clean up a left knee injury today and will be out for at least a month.
