Default CL MD1: A.S Roma - CFR Cluj [16-09-08]

Spalletti analyses Cluj challenge Friday 12 September, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luciano Spalletti is dreaming of Champions League glory for Roma but is wary of the threat posed by Tuesday's opponents CFR Cluj.

The Giallorossi have been drawn alongside Chelsea, Bordeaux and the Romanian champions in the Champions League last 32.

The opening test sees Cluj make their debut in the competition at the Stadio Olimpico.

“The fact that the Final is in Rome has given us an incentive to do even better this year,” Spalletti told UEFA.com.

“The minimum expected of us is to improve on last season and we have to try and go further.

“We need physical and mental strength so that we can show our quality on the pitch.”

Although the capital club are strong favourites to triumph over Cluj, Spalletti is taking nothing for granted.

“I have seen some of Cluj's games and they play some fantastic football,” the ex-Udinese man revealed.

“Sometimes when you play against unheralded teams the players think it will be easy, but that won't be the case.

“This Group has hidden dangers and we have to put in complete effort on the pitch and show the right attitude to get through, which I'm sure we will.”

our opener game.some how this feels like walking in to the unknown.they are the underdogs here andf the fact that they have come this far proves they are on par wth us and we should never underestimate them.

for now all i can say lets have good league match and come home wth a clean bill of health.

Cluj boss fears Roma reprisals Monday 15 September, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CFR Cluj's Italian boss Maurizio Trombetta is expecting Roma to be “like a wounded animal” in Tuesday's Champions League match.

Former Udinese assistant Trombetta earned the call to Romania at the start of this season after just one season as a head Coach at Sixth Division side Sevegliano.

And the 45-year-old earned his first victory with the Romanian champions against Gloria Bistrita last weekend.

“It was an important win because it came after a change of management,” Trombetta said.

“The team showed that they can play good football and we are motivated for Tuesday's game.

“We are honoured to be in such a great Group with teams of the calibre of Chelsea, Roma and Bordeaux and we are looking to clinch third place so that we get a UEFA Cup spot.”

Trombetta would dearly love to spring a huge shock at the Stadio Olimpico, but he has great respect for the Giallorossi.

“We have great motivation because this is the same team that earned the place in the Champions League,” he explained.

“We will try and make the most of any chances we get and we are a strong team with lots of Portuguese and Argentine players as well as some good Romanians.

“Roma may be having a tough time but they are a truly great side and they know how to play on the European stage.

“They will be like a wounded animal and will undoubtedly have a particularly aggressive attitude.”

he is fearing us, but i think we are fearing them more.as we all l know we tend t have a soft spot for smaller teams and give wins out....

Spalletti's calm before Cluj Monday 15 September, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luciano Spalletti isn't panicking as his Roma side try to bounce back from defeat against Palermo by winning their Champions League opener.

Things haven't gone according to plan so far this term for last season's Serie A runners-up.

After losing the Italian Super Cup on penalties, the Giallorossi could only draw with 10-man Napoli and came unstuck away to Palermo last weekend.

“I have read lots of provocative things over the last few days but I am calm and I just need to do the job calmly,” Spalletti told journalists.

“It's clear that we aren't doing that well at the moment, but I know my players after three splendid years together and I'm not worried by the results.

“A penalty cost us the Super Cup and at Palermo were could have made it 2-0 and closed out the game.

“However, we won't go looking for excuses because even with absences we have enough quality to compete with anyone.

“Have I made mistakes? I always try and find things to improve but there is nothing to crucify ourselves for.

Tomorrow's test is arguably the most important of the first month of the campaign as the capital club host Romanian champions CFR Cluj in a Champions League clash.

“Cluj are a team with lots of South Americans,” Spalletti said. “They have quality players and an atmosphere of charged enthusiasm.

“There has been development in the city, the squad and the club because they have climbed a long way in recent years.

“I know their Coach Maurizio Trombetta well. He is a very hard-working lad and a prepared professional. Now we will see if he has brought some of Italy to Cluj

aye, calm is what we need.no point of panicking for no reason and dig our graves even deeper.

Totti wants to play at some point in this match...even having him on the bench will hopefully add some inspiration. Come on boys...this is a crucial match in qualifying.

Panucci scores 1-0 after a good De Rossi hustle and cross.

How annoying is it to see Riise play.Aquilani was yelling at him earlier to close down the player.Which required Aquilani to try and take the player only for it to be looped over him to an open man....really tired of seeing Riise.

Tonnetto at LW is pretty much useless since he thrives at LB imo.

Menez has been our biggest transfer how come we see so much less of him but more of Tonetto?I understand that he needs to redefine his "muscle tone" but come on he's good enough to play.

Bloody fucking hell...words can't describe how irritating and upsetting this is.

Mexes and Juan being injured is a major blow...Loria is shit. I can't believe i'm missing FERRARI!!!!

Once Roma got the first goal...i thought, finally....Spalletti knocked some sense into their heads and they've woke up. But, back to the same old falling sleep and letting the other team take control.

This Roma is in disarray...they need to get their players back from injuries and get back to the one touch soccer that made Roma, Roma.

Menez may have to be operated due to his injury or muscle problems...or whatever his problem is.

Totti is such an inspiration...playing when he's not 100% and as soon as they scored the second goal...he was raring to go!!! Grazie Capitano!!!
