I always sensed a little friction over the "#10 jersey" at the WC. And also, there was speculation that Ale was fighting for a spot in the event Totti did return. I'm glad Ale and Totti were called as they were crucial to the team.
Seems unlikely that the two would be close. Totti is such a mad man, as Del Piero is calm and reserved.

That 'rivalry' has just been created by the media and fans, just like when Baggio left Juventus.
It's clear that Totti and Del Piero don't have any issues with each other.

Spalletti loves Totti. When Totti was injured last year, Spalletti wanted Totti to be on the bench coaching alongside him. That says a lot on how he feels about him. Spalletti knows what Totti means to Roma...no way he will risk that relationship.
|
Let's hope this relationship can bring home trophies to showcase thir success together

Totti is Roma, of course.

I love how these guys just bash "Toe-tea". When he plays fantastic and scores a nice goal, they applaud him. When he does something stupid, they bash him. Ridiculous! And Totti managed to score on the Penalty against Aust. Guess he didn't let the team down then, eh! And the blond dude, can't even say his name properly!

Spalletti can control Totti.........
Quote:
Spalletti denies Totti tension
Tuesday 27 February, 2007
Luciano Spalletti is not worried by Francesco Totti’s alleged tension. “There is nothing wrong with the player.”
The Giallorossi captain caused controversy over the weekend when he reacted angrily to Reggina goalkeeper Andrea Campagnolo after he saved his penalty in the 3-0 win over the Amaranto.
The player explained that he felt conned by Campagnolo, who told him that he knew he would kick to his right, and felt frustrated after failing to convert a spot-kick for the sixth time this season, a trend which might keep him from winning the Capocannoniere crown.
“I am not worried about Totti, he isn’t tense at all,” said Spalletti in his Press conference in view of the match with Chievo.
“He is one of our most important players and has given a decisive contribution to our improvements over the past two years,” added the tactician.
“I don’t remember other negative incidents which might have damaged Roma’s image and Totti is definitely one of the players who has done better.
“I know how to manage him, I have learned this by getting to know him better, and I am aware of what I need to do. When I say that there are things that he needs to improve, I do it only for his well-being, as well as for the entire group.”

Totti explains Azzurri snub and his dedication to Roma.
Quote:
Totti: Why I had to leave Azzurri
Tuesday 27 February, 2007
Francesco Totti has explained why he took a Sabbatical from the Nazionale – he had to choose and decided to commit fully to Roma.
“When you play every three days, you need rest and have to take something off the schedule. I chose to remove the Azzurri, although I do consider it a very important honour to wear that jersey,” he noted.
Totti has been repeatedly criticised by teammates and media for refusing to return to the Italy side despite his fine form, leading the Serie A Capocannoniere charts.
“My conscience is clear. I am not trying to distance myself or think I’m better than anyone else because I won the World Cup. I have always talked the matter over with the Coach and staff. I explained that it’s not easy to play when you have a metal plate with 11 screws in your ankle.”
He suffered the injury a year ago this month, but warned he will not play for the Azzurri again until the plaque is removed next season.
“The Nazionale shirt is very important to me. However, at this moment in time I cannot turn my back on Roma, so I preferred doing it this way. In any case, my first choice would always be Roma.”
This term he has already set a new record as the player with the most Giallorossi appearances, now at 455, while he is also the most prolific Serie A man still in activity on 139 goals.
“I want to hit the 200 goal mark by the end of my career. There’s still five years ahead of me, so I hope to remain at this level. I won’t say I can score 20-25 goals per season, but a little something here and there,” he told Sky Italia.
“My dream for Roma is to win the Champions League. I know the Final will be at the Olimpico in two years’ time, so it seems like destiny for us to gain our revenge on Liverpool. The same stadium, but with Totti upfront. I’d score two goals.”
The captain was in the stands as a young boy when Roma lost the European Cup to Liverpool and Bruce ‘Spaghetti Legs’ Grobelaar in 1984.
As a former Ultra’ and homegrown Romanista, Totti looked at the difference between his time in the crowd and the current violence problem.
“In my day, we went into the Curva to support Roma as a team and we were all united in that intent. Now unfortunately the political aspect has invaded the fanbase, as some are right-wing and some left. Misunderstandings occur and attitudes that are ugly to see, both for us players and the children who should feel welcome in the stadium.”

I still think he's making a mistake with his decision on the NT, he's only 30.

I agree....he complains about playing every three days for Roma. But the Azzurri don't play that often. Once every couple months should be fine for him. Guess he wants to focus on Roma and CL....but playing an extra game or two, won't hurt him!

He just needs time and i bet he's really nervous about his ankle after suffering something so painful...i just think hes worried.
Although i do believe he should return to the nazionale, he still needs to put his mark on the azzurri

At the start of the season the ankle excuse was fine but I don't see any reason why it should be an issue now. He's played almost every game for Roma this season and not once has he complained about his ankle or looked in pain.

At the start of the season, your right, he was using that as an excuse. But in Totti's defense, he does have some trouble with his ankle still. And i believe he missed one game due to his ankle being in pain. He still gets physiotherapy on his ankle in terms of hot tub etc. But he wants to concentrate on Roma. He knows this season is Roma's best chance to win the Scudetto and go far in CL. I guess he doesn't want to jeopardize that. But he an still do both Italy and Roma!

Spalletti admires Totti...the hero!

Roma coach Spalletti hails 2-goal hero Totti
tribalfooball.com - March 01, 2007
Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has hailed his two-goal captain Francesco Totti after yesterday's 2-2 draw at Chievo Verona.
Your Ad Here
"Francesco Totti is important," said Spalletti. "When we're struggling, he helps drag the team back into contention. He holds the team together, he keeps his teammates united. When others are struggling, he finds something extra and uses his quality to lift them.
"He had an outstanding game. Not just for the goals, but the way he played when we were not on top. Even when we were struggling to get the ball on the deck, he was still competing. His first goal was crucial. It turned the tide."

Totti still the penalty kicker according to Spalletti....
Quote:
Meanwhile, Roma boss Luciano Spalletti has told Totti that he will continue as the club's penalty taker despite failing to score from the spot six times already this year.
"Next time we have a penalty, Totti will have another go at scoring," he told Roma Channel.
"I will impose this. And if it is a decisive penalty, you will see, he will score it."
