Totti see's the big clubs improving next season...Roma must improve as well.

Quote:
Totti demands new faces
Monday 2 June, 2008

Roma captain Francesco Totti has underlined how important it is for his beloved club to bring in the right players this summer.

The Giallorossi have just had a season to remember after just being pipped to the title by Inter, winning the Coppa Italia for the second year running and reaching the last eight of the Champions League.

However, Totti is well aware that the outfit must look to the future rather than dwell on the successful past.

“It is our obligation to keep on improving,” said the 31-year-old. “That’s because Milan, Juventus and Fiorentina will be much stronger next season than they were this time arrive.”

Roma, unlike many of their big Italian rivals, have yet to make any market moves so far even if they are expected to bring in fresh faces – no matter if the club’s proposed takeover happens or not.

“Do we need a long bench with plenty or player alternatives or something else? It’s a complicated subject,” continued the No 10.

“Seeing as we will have so many games to play in the League and the Cups, we need players who will be ready when called upon. Especially for our international commitments.

“Next year will be an important one for us.”

After losing the Scudetto on the last day of the season, Roma made up for that disappointment by beating Inter 2-1 in the Italian Cup Final.

“It just wouldn’t have been right had we not won that game,” added Totti, who missed the finale with injury. “The disappointment would have been immense.”

Totti back on the field...wants to return for the Super Cup.

Quote:
Er Purpone ruptured his right knee ligaments several weeks ago in the 1-1 draw with Livorno which saw him miss the final season showdown with Inter.

The former Italy playmaker had surgery and he has been recovering well. He returned to the training pitch today to work with the football and his knee coped well as he put it through its paces with several strenuous exercises.

“Returning to the training pitch is a beautiful feeling,” Totti told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have to wait and see how everything goes but so far, so good.

“Hopefully I will be back for the Supercoppa against Inter as that is my objective.”

The Roma legend also had a few words for Jose Mourinho who has taken the reigns at the Nerazzurri.

“He (Mourinho) is a great coach and he has a great side at his disposal,” said Totti.

“I hope Inter don’t make too many important acquisitions.”

Roma finished runners-up in Serie A but they did beat Inter to hold onto their Coppa Italia crown

Totti will be hoping his rapid recovery continues in time for the new season as Roma look to mount a serious scudetto challenge.

He's made quite a speedy recovery in fairness, at this rate he'll be fit for the Supercoppa.

Totti recovers quickly from major injuries...just the little knocks during the season that keeps him out for a while.

Totti to return to the National Team? Totti said months ago that he would consider retuning to Italia for the WC. He was missed at the EC.

Quote:
Star duo to answer Lippi call?
Tuesday 24 June, 2008

There are whispers that Francesco Totti and Alessandro Nesta will return to international football if Marcello Lippi returns to the Italy post.

Totti retired from Azzurri duty in July 2007 after a period of uncertainty following Italy’s World Cup triumph in Germany.

He believed that the strains on his body were too great to continue to play for both club and country.

The Roma talisman resisted pleas from fellow players and Coach Roberto Donadoni and watched Euro 2008 from his sofa, but today’s newspapers suggest that he could be lured back to the fold by Lippi.

One month after Totti’s international retirement, star stopper Alessandro Nesta also announced that he also wouldn’t answer Donadoni’s call.

However, Nesta said at the time: “Who knows, perhaps things will be different within three years.”

Many feel that Marco Materazzi’s days in the Azzurri shirt are numbered after a poor Euro 2008 and that the door could open against for Nesta.

The Italian Football Federation will make a decision over the future of Donadoni within the week.
