Totti: 'It was Roma's destiny' Saturday 23 January, 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francesco Totti feels his first ever goal in Turin “was destiny” as Roma go five points clear of Juventus.

“It was destiny, a goal that was worth three points and I am so happy to have extended Roma's lead over Juve,” he said of the 2-1 victory.

“I am also pleased on a personal level to have matched the 188 Serie A goals scored by Giuseppe Signori.”

Alessandro Del Piero had given Juve the advantage, but Totti converted a penalty and deep into stoppages - after Gianluigi Buffon's dismissal - John Arne Riise nodded in the winner.

“The team spirit was crucial, as we are going through a positive period and faced them openly to earn the victory,” continued Totti.

It ended several taboos, as Claudio Ranieri had never beaten Juventus in his career, Totti had never scored here against the Bianconeri and Roma's last Turin triumph was on September 30 2001.

The captain was not originally set to play, as he is returning from a long injury lay-off, but Luca Toni pulled up with a calf strain just three minutes in.

“I really didn't expect it and didn't even do a minute of warm-up, so I came off the bench cold.”

When asked who he wanted to win tomorrow in the Milan derby, considering Roma are just eight points off the top, Totti was tight-lipped.

“It's only normal that when you win then you look at what the other teams are doing, but right now I'm focused only on Roma.”

thats a whole lot of stats there

Totti voted Best Italian Player Wednesday 3 March, 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Roma captain Francesco Totti has been voted the Best Italian Player in a poll conducted by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 33-year-old talisman finished ahead of his Roma teammate Daniele De Rossi and Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo.

The pressure is now mounting on Totti to come out of international retirement and play for Italy at the World Cup.

“It made me very happy to read the poll results, above all because it was based on the opinions of 100 people who represent different worlds: sport, culture, entertainment and I am really happy that they voted for me,” Totti said.

“To receive this type of gratification will be an extra motive to get back to playing quickly and above all to ensure that those people who voted for me don't lose faith in me.

“If you had asked me the same question I would almost certainly have said Gigi Buffon because he is football, without forgetting Daniele De Rossi who aside from being a teammate is first of all a friend,” Totti concluded.

congrats to il capitano
