Findley's two goals sparks Real Salt Lake
Real Salt Lake may have finally found the good-luck charm it needed.Robbie Findley, in his first game since being acquired from the Los Angeles Galaxy earlier this week, scored two goals in his Salt Lake City debut as RSL posted its first victory of the 2007 season, 2-1 over D.C. United on Saturday night. It only took two-and-a-half months for Real Salt Lake to get the win. The 21-year-old Findley, who came over in a deal that sent veteran midfielder Chris Klein westward, repeatedly found himself in prime scoring position."I went out there and did what I could," Findley said. "We all went out and played hard from the beginning. I know these guys have been working hard. Last week when I was with L.A. and we played them, it was a tough game. They deserve it."After coming up empty on a breakaway midway through the first half, he made up for it in the 41st minute. With plenty of open field in front of him and a D.C. defender giving chase, Findley found just enough space to drive a hard grounder just inside the left goalpost for a 1-0 advantage marking the first time all season RSL has had a lead."Robbie showed tonight that his pace is going to be very exciting for us," RSL coach Jason Kreis said. "He'll be the type of player that can get in behind defenses, and we've been lacking that a bit. In both of those goals, he really showed his pace."In the opening minutes of the second half, Findley struck again, and in similar fashion. This time, he had even less in his way as he drilled his second goal of the evening past D.C. goalkeeper - and former RSL starter - Jay Nolly off an assist from another recent RSL acquisition, forward Alecko Eskandarian."I thought him and Alecko, on the second goal, was one of the best combinations I've seen in a long time," Kreis said. "For two players to have that kind of understanding in their first game together bodes very, very well for us."United made things interesting late, as forward Luciano Emilio took advantage of a scramble in front of the Salt Lake net, poking in his sixth goal of the year to cut the deficit in half.Just minutes later, Guy-Roland Kpene nearly scored an equalizer, but his shot sailed high. With the victory, RSL broke a seven-game home winless streak, improving to 1-5-6 on the season."It feels very, very good. ... Having the lead in the game was a new feeling was a new feeling for me," Kreis said. "The team is very happy. ... I think that they've worked extremely hard over the past six weeks."

RSL left searching for missing piece
Quote:
Real Salt Lake had the effort, the energy, and the will to come away with a victory against the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night. They're just missing one element in the struggle for a victory.
"We're still looking for that one special play," said RSL coach Jason Kreis. "We're looking for a player to make a special play like Eddie Johnson makes a special play. He made the difference in the game, didn't he?"
The lone goal of the game came when Johnson collected his own rebound off the post and deposited it coolly into the net. It was one play, one carom that meant the winning goal for the Wizards.
"I don't really have much of a reason to hold my head down," Kreis said. "I'll tell you as the leader of them, I think they put in a very solid effort tonight."
RSL was outshot by a wide margin in the first half. But they fought back after the halftime break to climb back into the game. Still, they gave the Wizards a battle all night long.
"I looked at them in the locker room, and I looked at them as they came off the field. And I saw a bunch of guys with empty tanks," Kreis said. "They put everything they had into that game."
Real threatened the Wizards lead late in the match. They just couldn't find the chance that ended with the ball in the net.
"They deserved probably to equalize late in the game," Kreis said. "There was a chance or two that could have been better."
RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando expected an offensive challenge from the high-powered Wizards attack.
"We knew that they were going to have a lot of chances on goal," Rimando said.
Rimando took away an optimistic outlook because of the way RSL finished the match. They used up all the fuel in their engines.
"I guess the good thing is that we fought back," Rimando said. "Our second half was a lot better. It's usually the opposite where we play a good first half and the second half is a bit of a letdown."
The team is searching for answers. And Rimando apparently knows where the team will find those answers.
"It's something within us that we have to find. Maybe it's heart, maybe it's attitude," he said. "It's something we better find quick. Because we're already at the halfway mark and points are getting lost. And we're getting in the hole deeper and deeper."
Kreis is prepared to stay the course with the team. And he has the ears of a team that respects him.
"The message I was attempting to get across and the message I will keep portraying is this is a process," he said. "This is going to take time."

Real Salt Lake posted a victory while D.C. United fell to Danish competition as Major League Soccer teams continued with preseason scrimmages on Friday.
Real Salt Lake defeated the Ventura County Fusion of the PDL 7-0 in the first game of the club's preseason trip to Oxnard, Calif., while D.C. United fell to Odense BK of Denmark 1-0 as they continued their stay in Bradenton, Fla.
Real Salt Lake 7, Ventura County Fusion 0
Yura Movsisyan led an offensive onslaught for Real Salt Lake in its 2008 preseason exhibition debut Friday night, as the striker poured in four goals to lead Utah's MLS side to a 7-0 drubbing of the Ventura County Fusion of the USL Premier Development League (PDL) at Buena H.S. in Ventura, Calif.
The four tallies by Movsisyan is an unofficial record for the most goals by an RSL player in any contest in the team's four-year history. The 20-year-old striker accomplished the impressive feat in front of friends and family from his adopted hometown of Pasadena -- located just an hour away from Ventura -- and did so all in the game's second half.
Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis took full advantage of the scrimmage to play different teams in each half; the starting team playing staking Real to a 2-0 in the opening 45 minutes behind goals from Robbie Findley (13th minute) and Javier Morales (41), before Movsisyan led the second-half onslaught with goals in the 53rd, 62nd, 86th and 88th minutes. Kenny Cutler also scored for RSL, in the 66th minute. Real Salt Lake (first half): Nick Rimando -- Chris Lancos, David Horst, Ritchie Kotschau, Ian Joy -- Salim Bullen, Dusan Simic, Javier Morales, Nathan Sturgis; Tino Nunez, Robbie Findley.
(second half): Chris Seitz; Chris Wingert, Dustin Kirby, Matías Mantilla, Tony Beltran; Alex Nimo, Kenny Cutler, Andy Williams, Kevin Reiman; Kyle Brown, Yura Movsisyan

2nd exibition
Real Salt Lake 4, Santa Barbara City College 1
Using goals from four different players, Real Salt Lake picked up their second victory in as many days Saturday, coming from a goal down early to ease past Santa Barbara City College 4-1 in an 80-minute scrimmage at Oxnard College in Oxnard, Calif.
Santa Barbara jumped out to a 1-0 lead inside the first three minutes of the match, but RSL would not remain behind for long as forward Fabian Espindola notched his first goal of the preseason in the 15th minute to pull even. The score remained knotted at 1-1 until the end of the 40-minute half.
Forward Yura Movsisyan, who notched an unofficial RSL single-match record four goals the night prior, figured prominently again Saturday, putting home a Kenny Cutler pass in the 46th minute to give RSL a 2-1 lead. Veteran midfielder Andy Williams took over the rest of the way, setting up forward Adam Acosta and rookie midfielder Alex Nimo for the final two strikes of the match.
Real Salt Lake (first half): Kyle Reynish -- Tony Beltran, David Horst, Matías Mantilla, Ian Joy -- Alex Nimo, Nathan Sturgis, Javier Morales, Kevin Reiman -- Jeff Rowland, Fabian Espíndola.
(second half: Kyle Reynish (Matt Bredehoft 60) -- Chris Wingert, Dustin Kirby, Ritchie Kotschau, Chris Lancos -- Brennan Tennelle, Kenny Cutler (Carey Talley 66), Andy Williams, Dusan Simic -- Adam Acosta, Yura Movsisyan
