Madrid sign Garay
Real confirm Garay deal
Quote:
Argentine joins Real from Racing Santander
Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ezequiel Garay from Racing Santander. The highly-rated Argentine was linked with a number of other clubs including Barcelona but Real have won the chase.
The 21-year-old centre-back may remain on loan at Racing for another season but Real president Ramon Calderon has confirmed reports of a deal.
"We've signed Garay," Calderon told reporters during Real's celebrations of their 31st league title.
"I don't know if he will come to the club this season or next, but we have signed a contract.
"He is a young player and the signing is proof of our desire to create a young, committed team full of enthusiasm and ambition."
Garay, who is recovering from a knee injury, is reported to have cost Real in the region of 10million euros (£8million).
His arrival is expected to pave the way for the departure of either Fabio Cannavaro or Christoph Metzelder.

This is really bad. Barca agreed a deal with Garay in March but pulled out of the deal and now Madrid have got him. We'll see how costly this move proves to be by both Barca and Madrid.

Ezequiel Garay is a very talented player and again it looks like Real Madrid have done the right things when it comes to transfers.
But he shall play one more season for Racing before he joins Madrid in 2009/2010 season? I don't like that. He should've entered now, because IMO Fabio Cannavaro should be replaced with him now. But nothing is confirmed yet.
Ramos - Pepe - Garay - Marcelo is a very young and talented lineup.

Garay to stay another season with Santander
Garay to stay on loan with Racing for another season....
Well, I think he's good enough to join us ATM, but gaining more experience in Uefa cup with Santander wouldn't be so bad idea ...

I had hoped he had joined before next season, but its great that he'll get a new season as regular for Santander to grow and develop in Europe.
Looks like Madrid will continue with their same defence for next season:
Ramos - Pepe - Cannavaro - Heinze
Torres - Metzelder - Marcelo as backup. Both Heinze and Ramos can play CD.

Great signing. Madrid have an exceptionally strong core of defensive players now. Imagine if they'd been this strong defensively when Zidane, Figo and Raul were all together(before Ronaldo and Beckham came along and ruined things).

Schuster: Garay One For The Future
Quote:
Bernd Schuster has admitted that Real Madrid always considered the signing of Ezequiel Garay part of a long-term plan and that he was not somebody that needed for next season.
The German coach was reflecting on the decision to pay €10m for the Argentinian defender and then loan him straight back to Racing Santander for another year.
At 21, Garay will gain more experience by staying at El Sardinero and playing in the UEFA Cup than he would by moving to the Bernabéu and being behind Pepe and Fabio Cannavaro in the pecking order.
"Garay is an acquisition that we have made thinking about the future, not for next season," Schuster explained.
"One must think only about today, but also about tomorrow, so he is a reinforcement that will give the club a view towards the next few years."
Many expected Garay to go straight into pre-season training with Madrid until president Ramón Calderón hinted that a loan deal could be done to allow Racing to keep the highly-rated centre-back.
The Cantabrians could now see other stars stay for the club's first sortie into Europe and are hoping that Marcelino will also remain in charge.
