rising young player clearly loaded with talent.

We'll have to see about that. I heard that he basically only had the one good tournament in the U 21. Otherwise, I've heard he just had an average season. He wasn't very good against Chelsea.

He has played LB in like 100% of the matches for Feyenoord, he only played LM for Holland..

Everyone in Holland is laughing at Madrid, for how they can pay so much money for an unproven player. He has been very avarage indeed during the season. I'm very happy with the deal Feyenoord got. His worth was considered around 5m euro in Holland. Some team offered i think 7m for him, around a month ago? Most supporters in Holland were amazed with that offer. Asthonishing what 1 good tournament can do to the value of a player

Reall now? I watched him in a few games, the U21s and the Rotterdam and he was always on the left flank of a 3 up top.

That's where the scouts are - they report back, they send more scouts on him and they go into raptures. But it's also worth noting what that will do for his confidence and how it will affect his improvement as a player. When a youngster does brilliantly in a tournament, he starts showing that kind of form elsewhere, he gets a bit more authority, and that helps him build his game overall and get better. £9m I'd consider a coup, his age, contractual situation and potential (looking at what he's shown he can do).

Yes for the U21s he played LM (with Holland i meant the U21, he has never been called up for our 1st team yet unsurprisingly). For Feyenoord he usually played LB mate, but he was very attacking...maybe that's what made you think that he played as a LM

He played against other 20 year olds, when playing against more experienced players he fails (like in the Dutch league, imagine what will happen when he plays in La Liga ).

I know a Feyenoord-fan, he doesn't rate him highly and is VERY happy with the fee Feyenoord got

About how other followers of the Dutch league think, look below, a poll from Voetbal International - Home

At Madrid, Drenthe will be:
a big star 5%
starter 7%
rotation player 9%
substitute 42%
not even among the subs 37%
Total 52.208 votes

Erwin Koeman (last years Feyenoord coach) said he moved abroad too quickly and Louis van Gaal said it's shortsighted of Real Madrid to sign a youngster based on 1 tournament

Fair enough if he does well on a big championship with older players, but believe me, a youth championship doesn't tell too much. Marceo Rigters was the topscorer i believe, ever heard of him? Last year he was a substitute at NAC, now he moved away for little money to Scotland.

I'd have to agree with Blau in that I'm highly sceptical of this deal. In the poll 79% of the people that watch him regularly say he'll be sub or non starter quality is a hard case to argue against.

If Drenthe has got his reputation from 1 tournament then I would have expected a fee like £2 or £3m. £9m is just way too much and about the same they could have got Chivu for.

I'll get arse splinters and sit on the fence for now as I think the fee was too high and he seems slightly overated but I'll be prepared to eat humble pizza if he turns out awesome.

We don't know for sure how Drenthe will play or develop in Real Madrid, like most of the other players joining a new club in a new league.

But I don't think Real Madrid have bought Drenthe just because of his good performance in the youth tournament.

But he played 29 matches for Feyenoord last season too.

Madrid wanted a young left wingback like Carlos with tuq and technique. The clips I've seen on Drenthe, you can see that he has these quialities, and that's a big benefit in todays football. Not many have the speed/tuq/jerk or what you call it.

£9 mill is a transfer Real Madrid can afford and its not easy to find a good offensive leftback today. All the best players have a horrible big price and Real Madrid wants to buy in youngsters for the future. Leftbacks are not that easy to get either.

So if some of you believe that Drenthes price should've been around £2-3 mill....in todays market when Chopra goes for £5 mill....well you should think twice.

Chopra was very bad for someone of his quality although the same club just got Scottish keeper Craig Gordon for a whopping £9m which is about how much Cech cost so I think the Sunderland SD must be a moron.

No one can really tell how Drenthe will do until he's played for a while so whether we're confident or sceptical nobody can be sure yet.

Buffon (best keeper in the world) - £32m
Gordon (best british keeper around) - £9m

It's not that bad for equivalents, that one. Chopra £5m was bad, Mido is going for around £7m and Earnshaw has been £3.5m for the last 3 relegated/promoted sides he's played for. The promoted clubs need strikers badly and are willing to pay a fortune for them, which raises the value of a lot of deadwood strikers in the Premiership.

You have to remember that big clubs with cash to flash instantly double figures when they are interested in a player. Madrid clearly have money, they are in serious need to buy so they pay more. Valencia have nid £10m for Van der Vaart, now if Madrid wanted him, the starting offer wouldsurely have been twice that.

Look what Manutd payed for their talents they bought from Portugal. The biggest talents today are very expensive together with the growning economic situation in todays football.

A left wingback like Drenthe for £9 mill is a good deal. Remember that he is an '87 modell too.

26, on a very avarage level, honestly

ps on a sidenote, Feyenoord conceded 2nd most goals in the whole eredivisie. Not really a league famous for its defending. So what does it actually mean that he started for them (as LB, not LM as some think)?

It's obvious that Real bought him based on that 1 tournament

Don't get me wrong, i'd like him to improve (despite him playing for Real Madrid, he could be a good player for the Dutch NT) but i can't see him becoming a great player.

Of course had that tournament something to say. Its not a bad thing to perform very well in a tournament full of talents.

That he played matches for Feyenoord has of course something to mean. He is a wingback, very talented and have qualities that can fit in for Madrid and in La Liga. Its up to him and only time will show if he will perform or not. But I don't think he'll raise the team from day one. He is just 20.

...and to define 'a great player'.... Drenthe is 20 years old and did a very good youth tournament + he has matches for Feyenoord in Eresdivison. He is now in Real Madrid and he will get playing time. He is the type Madrid are after, an offensive wingback with speed. OF COURSE can he be a great player, but its up to himself. We just have to wait and see and only time will tell us.

Wow, I never knew they signed this kid. He's fast and has amazing mobility.

I guess where the money lies, Real keeps calling.

Default Drenthe in road accident with Police car

MADRID, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Real Madrid's new signing Royston Drenthe was involved in a road accident with a Police car in the early hours of Monday morning, Spanish sports daily Marca have reported.

The Dutch youth international, who completed a 14 million euro move to the Spanish champions from Feyenoord earlier this month, was reported to have collided with the Police car while executing a U-turn in the city centre at around 4:30 a.m.

A Policeman suffered minor injuries and Drenthe returned a negative result in a test for alcohol.

The wing-back made his Primera Liga debut with Real in the 2-1 home win over city rivals Atletico Madrid on Saturday.
