Default Primera Liga Preview: Real Madrid - Real Betis

Revenge for a Copa del Rey exit very fresh in the Merengue minds will be on the agenda as Capello’s Real Madrid try to make amends against a resurgent Real Betis side.

Getting Back On Track

Things were looking quite mushy again in the Spanish capital after Madrid’s 2-1 win at San Sebastian last week.

While the optimists will see it as a result that turns the team back on course towards the title, the pessimists will see it as nothing more than a short reprieve for the men in white… especially for their manager, Fabio Capello.

Whichever way you look at it, it was a much welcomed victory that stopped the rot of unacceptable back to back defeats for Los Merengues.

But one player who will view the win as a major turning point in his season is David Beckham. The midfielder made a long overdue return to the starting line up and frosted the icing on the cake with a goal.

The team that are really getting back on track, however, are Real Betis.

Ever since Luis Fernandez arrived at the club to replace Irureta at the end of December, the Andalucians have only lost once in their last nine games in all competitions, although that one defeat was a punishing 5-1 hammering by Osasuna.

But that is still quite an impressive statistic when you consider that they’ve had to play Valencia, Barcelona and Sevilla in the last three weeks. Include all that with their solid results in the Kings’s Cup (eliminating Real Madrid and holding Sevilla to a first leg draw) and you can see just how much they’ve turned their season around.

Mission: Revenge

It is that King’s Cup 5th round elimination to Betis that has sparked sentiments of revenge amongst some in the Bernabeu camp. Goalkeeper Iker Casillas has made it no secret that he wants some measure of reprisal for that elimination when the Andalucians come to town. The Madrid custodian, who was not featured in that Copa match-up said, “Yes, we are looking to get even because many of us had our eyes set on the King's Cup. You really miss being there when you see the final on TV”.

The King’s Cup was indeed, at that stage of the season, Madrid’s only chance of silverware this season. But as much as it is about getting even, what’s even more crucial for them is to secure all three points and take advantage of Barca’s difficult trip to Valencia and Sevilla’s tricky clash with Atletico Madrid.

Mission: Repeat

On the other side of the spectrum, Real Betis will be hoping to repeat their King’s Cup feat and produce another surprise result at the Bernabeu. Their French manager, Luis Fernandez revealed that it wouldn’t be a serious matter at all if they failed to score in Madrid, hinting at the possibility that he may be happy enough to walk out of the Bernabeu with a scoreless draw.

But midfielders Capi and Assuncao, on the other hand, said that they would love nothing more than to capitalize on Madrid’s poor home record this season – and who wouldn’t – and try to win the match with a couple of goals. However, their scoring record against the Whites, as you will see, is not all that hot lately.

Past Encounters

Real Madrid have a strong head to head record against the Verdiblancos. In the past five league meetings, Madrid have won three times and drawn the other two, The last three have seen them keep clean sheets. The only bad taste in the mouth is that Copa del Rey elimination, despite Los Merengues maintaining their unbeaten run against the Sevillians.

In the reverse fixture earlier this season in September, a sole Mohammadou Diarra strike was enough to seal a 1-0 (surprise surprise) win at the Manuel Ruiz de Lopera. It was also the match where Brazilian Cicinho tore his anterior cruciate ligament and the right back has been ruled out ever since.

TEAM NEWS

Real Madrid

While one player seems to have patched things up with the coach, another is causing a rustle. Just another typical week in Madrid, one might say. This time, it is Robinho who has come out and voiced his discontent at being left on the bench. While the Brazilian wizard has maintained that he and Capello are not at odds with each other, he has said however, that the Italian tactician does not quite trust him as a footballer.

Diarra continues to be unsettled at the club, admitting that although he is not playing his best football right now, he would not have any problems if Madrid were to sell him at the end of the season. But the Malian looks doubtful to play any part in Saturday’s clash anyway as he has missed training all week due to a slight knock he picked up against Sociedad last week.

Roberto Carlos meanwhile, has made a full recovery after a month long absence from injury and he is desperate to step onto the pitch again. But with the titanic Champions League clash with Bayern just on the horizon, the leftback may well be rested to make sure he doesn’t aggravate his injury. Do expect a cameo appearance, though.

Back-up players Pavon, Meji and Raul Bravo have all shrugged off their minor injuries and they are ready to be called upon if the need arises. Also expect a certain player by the name of David Beckham to make his second consecutive appearance in the starting line up.

Real Betis

Last week’s 'super-derbi' with deadly city rivals Sevilla surprisingly did not produce as many fireworks as previous editions (except for the management fracas up at the VIP box after the game). There were only three yellow cards (one to Betis) while the injury count was fairly low. And manager Luis Fernandez will be thankful for the minimal battle-scars.

Only Arzu suffered a serious injury in that encounter and will be ruled out for the trip to the capital; as will former Milanista Johann Vogel, who injured his knee during a training session although he might have a chance of playing depending on a late fitness test.

Influential midfielder Capi returns from suspension while Nano, Edu, Assuncao and Enrique Romero are also back in the squad, but their participation in the match will not be known until the 11th hour to ensure they are fully match fit.

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Real Madrid: Casillas – Sergio Ramos, Helguera, Cannavaro, Torres – Beckham, Gago, Emerson, Guti – Raul, van Nistelrooy

Real Betis: Doblas – Vega, Ilic, Juanito, Rivas – Assuncao, Capi, Lozano, Nano – Sobis, Robert.

Default Primera Liga Report: Beckham Sees Red In Bore Draw

David Beckham was sent off as Real Madrid's quest to make up ground on the league leaders drew a blank against a resilient Real Betis side in El Bernabéu on Saturday.

After an uninspirational performance by the home team, tempers frayed towards the end as a scuffle broke out with Beckham at the centre of the melée and a minute later he had still not calmed down.

As José Isidoro looked to move out of his own penalty, the English midfielder swung at the Betis youngster from behind and would have been dismissed for a second yellow if the referee had not produced a direct red.

It was a sorry end to a sorry performance from Madrid and their frustrated supporters again produced the white handkerchiefs in protest.

Fabio Capello opted to start with three midfielders with a trident off attackers ahead of them, leaving Ruud Van Nistelrooy to plough a lone furrow up front.

While the tactic allowed Madrid not to fall prey to a counter-attack, it was not the most conducive to breaking down a stubborn Betis defence.

Robinho was restored to the starting line-up, after threatening to leave in midweek, while David Beckham retained his place on the right as he made his 150th appearance for the club.

In the openig 45 minutes, Sergio Ramos proved to be the hosts' greatest attacking threat as the defender broke forward for a hat-trick of opportunities.

The former Sevilla full-back's first effort flew straight at Toni Doblas after just two minutes as did his second which came after an ambitious run from his own penalty area.

In between, Van Nistelrooy was thwarted by the keeper as he looked to shoot from an acute angle, while Fernando registered Betis' opening effort with a wild drive fm 40 yards.

On the half-hour mark, Fernando had a second chance as he prodded the ball goalwards only to see Iker Casillas gather with ease.

Sergio Ramos' third attempt was the closest he came to breaking the deadlock as his left-foot shot from the edge of the area saw Doblas have to palm it away.

Betis' best opportunity came when Fabrice Pancraté exchanged passes with Rafael Sobis to leave the Frenchman through on goal, but Casillas was quickly off his line to save at the feet of the former PSG midfielder.

After sitting back during the opening half, Luis Fernández's side added more bite going forward and could well have snatched all three points.

Juande and Nano both tried their luck after the restart before Van Nistelrooy missed Madrid's best chance of the match as he connected with Beckham's low cross, only to lift the ball against the bar from close range.

Moments later Fernando headed a corner against Casillas' post and the hosts' keeper was soon in action again when substitute Alberto Rivera hammered a shot goalwards from outside the area which was palmed upwards.

Robert connected with the rebound, which was again pushed out and as Madrid failed to clear their lines, Miguel Ángel had a third go from outside the area which flew straight at the home team's custodian.

Iván Helguera could have been an unlikely hero when he made his way forward only to blaze wide inside the area, but it was still Betis that looked the most dangerous.

Miguel Ángel's long ball forward saw Pancraté hold off Fabio Canavarro, but as Casillas approached he rolled the ball just wide of the far post.

Before the flare-up in the closing minutes, Beckham curled a free-kick just wide as it became inevitable that the deadlock would not be broken.

REAL MADRID (0): 1. Casillas; 4. Sergio Ramos (Marcelo, 72 min), 21. Helguera, 5. Cannavaro and 38. Torres; 16. Gago (7. Raúl, 45 min), 8. Emerson, 23. Beckham and 14. Guti; 10. Robinho (19. Reyes, 61 min) and 17. Van Nistelrooy

Default Capello defends Becks

Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello has defended David Beckham following his red card against Real Betis.

The former England captain was making just his second appearance since being exiled by Capello following last month's announcement that he would move to American Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer.

The midfielder saw red just seconds from the conclusion of a disappointing goalless draw with Betis at El Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday after lashing out at Isidoro.

Capello felt the referee was heavy handed with the former Manchester United star.

"We have had little help from referees this year," claimed Capello.

"It was a foul in favour of Beckham (moments before) and I think the referee was a little quick to flash a red card.

"I've seen it on television and I don't think it merited a red card."

The dismissal was Beckham's fifth with Los Merengues, and the eighth of his career.

Saturday's result leaves Real four points behind rivals Barcelona in the table, with the Spanish champions away to Valencia on Sunday.

Default Mijatovic Spits Fire On Ref Following Beckham Dismissal

Real Madrid sporting director Pedja Mijatovic was livid at David Beckham being handed a direct red card against Real Betis.

Beckham - who was already on a yellow - was shown a direct red in the final minutes of the game after seemingly intentionally hacking down Isodoro from behind in apparent anger.

It all started when the midfielder went down in the are under a challenge from the young Betis defender in the final minute of injury time, but the referee - Cesar Fernandez - refused to grant him anything.

Isodoro, who had won the ball, turned around to make a quick run towards the Real Madrid half.

That was not to be, though, as the former England skipper - who was still on the floor - scythed him down in what looked like a retaliatory gesture.

However, Mijatovic did not see it that way, and chose to hit out at Fernandez immediately after the game.

"Although I do not like to speak about these subjects [refereeing decisions], we have been on the receiving end of some fatal decisions," he fumed.

"I get the feeling that the referees are against us," he continued, refusing to bite his tongue.

"There are decisions and bookings that I simply fail to understand, as does everybody else.

"We kept being fouled and then it was our player who was sent off. There was a worse challenge on Robinho [an arm in his face], and the referee was right next to it, but did not give anything.

"Until now we have kept quiet, but now is the time to highlight these things."

He then wanted to lament the team's poor luck, suggesting that the ball just did not want to go into the net.

"We have dropped many points in the Bernabeu, and that is a reason for concern. We dominated the game today, but the ball did not want to go in. We had bacd lock even in our last home game. We must solve these problems and turn this around."

Finally, he admitted that the Champions League clash against Bayern Munich - again at home - would be another tricky one to negotiate.

All that said, the papers tomorrow morning will focus on just one thing: his explosive comments on Beckham's sending off.

It was an awful tackle from Beckham and he deserved the red card. But you can see he still gives it all for Real.Real Madrid was extremely poor in this match.Real Betis was close to win with several good chances.Real should never had let Ronaldo go.

Robinho was a big dissapointment...again.The player who I'd like to watch on Real Madrid was Torres.Very decent back.Emerson looks to slow.van Nistelrooy looked lonley up front.Gago looked promising. So did Marcelo. This is the first match I've seen Real Madrid this season. It was easy to see that they are not good enough to win the league this season.
