It appears that Fabio Capello’s new Argentine midfielder, Fernando Gago, is on the verge of being cut from the squad that’ll take on Levante and that Guti will take his place in the first eleven.
José María Gutiérrez (a.k.a. 'Guti') is slated to stand in if the ex-Boca man can’t shake off muscular hassles that have prevented him from training all week.
Gago left the Villarreal match limping and the management don’t want their new acquisition to be endangered. Previous reports had suggested that Michel Salgado and David Beckham could also come back in, with Sergio Ramos and Reyes being allowed to rest after picking up minor injuries.
Guti has recovered from the ankle injury he suffered in the first 2007 Merengue match and it looks like Capello will give the 31 year-old a starting nod given the lack of alternatives. In fact Capello will also be relieved to know that more players are returning from dry dock.
Recent training saw Raúl González, José Antonio Reyes, David Beckham, Emerson and Sergio Ramos back to playing duties after various aches and pains had been overcome.
The ex-Sevilla centre-cum-right-back has recovered from a sprained ankle and is a welcome ace in the hole for the Italian.
Given that both Miguel Torres and Raúl Bravo seem unlikely to recover from their own ailments in time, Ramos’ recovery is a Real saving grace.
The Merengues are in dire need of a victory after last round’s setback against Villarreal put the brakes on what was supposed to be a brave brand New Year.
