Becks and Figo go head to head
David Beckham played opposite Luis Figo - the man he threatens to displace from the Real Madrid team - in Carlos Queiroz's first training session since taking over the Spanish champions.
The players got down to work in the humid climate of Kunming, where they will be working for a week before their opening game in Beijing.
Queiroz had his men doing light physical work before organising them into two teams of 12 for a practice match.
Both players played on the right of their respective sides but, as Queiroz ensured both teams were filled with an equal number of theoretical 'first-teamers' and squad players, it was hard to draw any conclusions about his plans.
The Portuguese coach was pleased at his first contact with the players out on the pitch.
"The first session went well. Everyone has returned in good shape after the holidays and they were looking forward to starting," he told the club's website, www.realmadrid.com.
"Our next session on Sunday will help us get a bit of physical condition but today everyone was very enthusiastic and that enthusiasm is going to continue."
The opening session gave the players plenty of early contact with the ball, something Queiroz considers vital.
"If we want to play football and keep the ball we have to train with it. There is work to be done on a physical level, but the most important thing is the ball," he stressed.
