But Helguera is irreplaceable, if he gets injured we're screwed.

Why should Madrid pay a lot of money for Viera when we have Ivan Helguera? And they bought Woody and Samuel and put Ivan Helguera back there he belongs.
IMO Helguera is a better midfielder than Viera.
Ivan Helguera has both deffensive and offensive qualitys, and he will take the Makelele role at midfield.
I want a backup for Salgado, because Mejia isn't a right back. And Xabi Alonso had been perfect, but he joined The Reds.

Sorry mate have to disagree about Helguera being better then Vieira. I seen him in midfield and he is not assured like Vieira is. Vieira is by far the worlds best defensive midfielder, i dont think many will doubt that but when Keane at his best a few years ago, i dont think Vieira was as good but know i rate Vieira as the best midfielder in the world. He gets in tackles, he does go forward as well and he can pass the bal well.

He is. Only problem is that he might get injured and then we're screwed (Celades isn't good enough).
Besides, I was hoping we would get a young talented central midfielder in hope of better days when Beckham drops dead...

Bullshit to spend 40 million £ on Viera. Ivan Helguera knows the Spanish leauge better, and IMO he is a better midfielder than Viera is. Because Helguera is also a good attacker, more like Gerrard.

Real Madrid coach Jose Antonio Camacho has promoted three young midfielders to his senior squad for the new season.
After missing out on Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira, Camacho has chosen to look within his own setup to boost midfield stocks for this campaign.
Former Las Palmas midfielder Jotha and fellow Real 'B' teammates Robles and Ruben de la Red are set to leave the 'B' team this season to join Camacho's senior squad.
Jotha and Robles, both 22, are expected to taste first team action early, while De la Red is a Spanish U19 international and rated highly within the club.
