Stony Brook men's players Kevin Muller (Bay Shore, L.I.) and Gadiel Figueroa (Caguas, Puerto Rico) and former Seawolf Chris Megaloudis (Queens, N.Y.) are among a pool of players in training camp with the Puerto Rican National Team.
Puerto Rico plays Bermuda Wednesday and Friday to begin a series of friendlies against other Caribbean teams. The team will play the Dominican Republic in the CONCACAF first leg of World Cup qualifiers in a one-game showdown in Puerto Rico March 26.
Miller and Figueroa completed their junior seasons at Stony Brook. Figueroa played in seven games and Muller played in 10, starting four.
After transferring to Stony Brook from Saint Peter's, Megaloudis was a two-time first-team all-America East selection for the Seawolves. In his two years at Stony Brook, Megaloudis recorded 15 goals and 12 assists and led the Seawolves to the AE championship in 2005 and a berth in the NCAA Division I tournament.
Hofstra sophomore defender Richard Martinez also was called up to the National Team.
According to the Washington Post Soccer Insider, Puerto Rico could have some more players as well, including former MetroStars Petter Villegas (Ecuador), Michael Behonick, who sat the bench as the back-up emergency goalkeeper at time, and former Red Bulls defender Taylor Graham. They reportedly are seeking naturalization status.
Villegas and Behonick play for the Puerto Rico Islanders; Graham performs for the Seattle Sounders.
Both teams play in the USL First Division.
The Puerto Rico National Team is coached by former Dallas coach Colin Clarke.
