women's profissional soccer, coming to Philadelphia
Professional women's soccer is returning to Philadelphia! The City of Brotherly Love will host a WPS team beginning in 2010. With its past support for the WUSA's Charge, its enthusiasm for the Philadelphia MLS team also debuting in 2010 and the prospect of the WPS side playing in the soccer-specific stadium being constructed in Chester, Pa., we know Philly is a great market for our league to expand into.
Matt Driver, the acting managing partner of Philadelphia's growing investor group, is the main force behind bringing Women's Professional Soccer to Philly. A former professional player and MLS assistant coach, Driver was seeking a new mountain to scale and found it in women's soccer.
In the latest Ask the Commissioner feature, WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci remarks upon Philadelphia's strong soccer history and Driver's leadership skills, while also touching upon the markets WPS continues to explore for expansion in 2009 and 2010.
