France take consolation from third

While 6-4 third-place for Les Bleus will not make up for the disappointment of failing to retain their title, it should certainly help soften the blow of their devastating semi-final defeat yesterday by Uruguay. Equally hurt by their own elimination at the hands of Brazil, Ze Miguel's Portugal have at least proved they are among the beach soccer global elite with this fourth-place finish.
"This position is a long way short of what we were hoping for when we came here, but the players only have themselves to blame. They should have worked harder to make sure that Lady Luck didn't desert them…This last match was difficult for both teams to face after yesterday's disappointment, but France coped with it better than we did."

As expected, the game got off to a rip-roaring start, with an incredible five shots on goal in the first fifty seconds. Alan and Jair Cardoso found the back of the net with their efforts (1-1), provoking a further passage of skilful and action-packed play, which left the score tied at 2-2 at the end of the first period.

Madjer may have shaved his head yesterday, but he has lost none of his talent. Will anyone ever work out how to contain the best player on the planet? What with back-heel flicks, acrobatic volleys, long-range rocket shots and bicycle kicks, the Portuguese number 7 possesses the full repertoire of the text book beach soccer exponent.

But today, it was the French who were most intent on proving that their rightful place was in the second match of the day rather than this one. Controlling the game, Les Bleus awaited the right moment to make their dominance count.

And it duly came in the early stages of the final period, courtesy of two headers from Didier Samoun and Laurent Castro (5-3). Madjer then had just enough time to make a further deposit in his goal account for the tournament with an amazing 21st strike, but France were the stronger side by some distance on the day (6-4).

"It wasn't easy to pick the players up in just 24 hours," declared Eric Cantona after this win. But I'm happy because under difficult conditions, they've proven they are men. Even though we didn't come here for the bronze medal, we've had an amazing time here today."

Brazil claim world title

There was no way Brazil were going to let this one slip. After unexpectedly crashing out of last year's competition at the semi-final stage, the hosts laid their ghosts to rest by crowning a flawless 2006 campaign with a 4-1 win over Uruguay on Sunday to claim the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.
The day turned out to be one big Brazilian party from start to finish. Singer Daniela Mercury got the fans in the mood before the big kick-off, and even the prospect of facing old rivals Uruguay, the team that so dramatically denied the Auriverdes at the 1950 FIFA World Cup™, failed to dampen the sense of expectation among the fans.

Evidently intent on spoiling another Brazilian party, however, the Charruas made life difficult for the favourites in the early stages. Just as they had done in the previous knockout rounds, Venancio Ramos' tactically disciplined charges closed ranks defensively to deny Brazil's much vaunted attack. Even when the irrepressible Benjamin somehow managed to find a route through, he came up against an inspired Diego in the Uruguay goal. Nevertheless, this was destined to be the hosts' day and it was Buru who set them on the road to victory with a firmly struck free kick before the first break.

Contrary to expectations, the men in blue silenced the Copacabana after the restart when Ricar held the ball up expertly in front of goal before turning and hitting a low right-footed strike into the back of the net. Perhaps sensing an opportunity to repeat that historic win of 56 years ago, the underdogs grew in confidence. They reckoned without the quality of the talismanic Benjamin, however. Less consistent than on other occasions, the number 10 still managed to prise open the Uruguayan rearguard with a well-taken free kick and restore his side's advantage.

The final move of the second period proved to be decisive. Faced with a golden opportunity to level the scores with a close-range free kick, Pampero somehow managed to skew his effort wide of Mao's goal.

It was a vital miss and the Uruguayans knew it. Deflated by Pampero's profligacy, the Charruas dropped their tireless work rate, giving Duda and Sidney the chance to complete the scoring, the latter with yet another dead-ball strike. Despite their late capitulation, coach Ramos was far from despondent with his team's efforts. "We may have finished runners-up, but we've done ourselves proud," he said. "The squad worked very hard during what was a cold winter and was determined to succeed. We hadn't played since March when we came here and the fact we reached the final is a tremendous achievement for all of us," he added, the smiles on his players' faces emphasising his thoughts.

It was a day when everyone went home happy, particularly the deserving champions. "This win is for a lot of people - the fans, our coach and all the players, who gave it their all out there," commented the jubilant skipper Junior Negao afterwards. "Above all, though, it's for the whole country of Brazil."

we beat Russia on Saturday in the euro league final that enabled us to play Brazil in the Mundialito final the following day on Sunday.

The last time Portugal were in action, heads were bowed and spirits low as they let the first final of the European Beach Soccer League (EBSL) 2007 slip from their grasp in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy. Their opponents Russia had just pulled off a shock 4-3 triumph to prove beyond any doubt they belong at this level, and both teams now look destined to qualify for the Marseille Superfinal after meeting in the showpiece match of the Portuguese leg in the Algarve town of Portmao.

This time, the hosts held their concentration throughout the entire weekend, eager to obtain a revenge victory that at times appeared ready to pass them by. As in Italy, the Portuguese had the better of the play against their Russian rivals, but the scoreboard told an entirely different story for much of the encounter. Trailing twice, the team featuring two of the weekend's stars in best player Alan and top scorer Madjer had to dig deep to pull themselves back into contention, and they finally went ahead three minutes before the end to win 3-2, Alan netting two of their goals.

"This game wasn't about revenge for me," commented the Lusitanians' coach afterwards. "It was a question of honour for us to win this tournament and give our fans something to cheer about. We put in an excellent performance but we missed too many chances." Given the sparkling form of Russian shot-stopper Andrey Bukhlitskiy - once again voted best goalkeeper - he should perhaps be thankful his charges found the back of the net at all.

In the match for third place, meanwhile, France and Switzerland thrilled the crowd with a roller-coaster of s tie that refused to swing decisively either way until Thierry Ottavy and Didier Samoun finally put the result beyond doubt. Grabbing a goal apiece in the last four minutes, they earned Eric Cantona's Bleus a 6-4 triumph.

"After the thrashing we received from Portugal (6-1), the fact we were able to fight hard and ultimately win this game is an excellent sign," said France striker Laurent Castro. "Now it's up to us to build on this result in the future, starting at home next weekend in Tignes. Our goal there will be simple: to lift the trophy."

Behind those four countries, who seem a comfortable notch above the rest of the field, the competition is sure to be fervent for the last two tickets to the Marseille Superfinal. And of those other teams Italy proved the weekend's biggest disappointment by only managing an under-par seventh place, following their quarter-final penalty shoot-out loss to Switzerland and a lacklustre 7-4 defeat to Spain the very next day. Only a 4-1 victory over the still-winless Czech Republic on Sunday restored a little Azzurri pride.

For their part, European champions Spain had a little more to smile about after re-launching their bid in their neighbours' backyard. Amarelle and Co failed to get past Russia in their first outing, suffering a 4-3 reverse, but they picked themselves up and recorded two straight wins, including a 1-0 triumph over Poland to seal fifth place.

"This tournament has helped us get our confidence back and I think luck will be on our side from now on," smiled Spain's Javi Alvarez after the game. For their part, the Poles managed just a single win, beating the Czechs 7-4, and it remains to be seen whether they have what it takes to bounce back.
