NEW YORK -- The Yankees jumped out to an early lead and the Red Sox couldn't recover in the finale of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.
Andy Pettitte gave up eight hits and one run over seven innings to lead the Yankees to an 8-3 win and improve his record to 3-3 on the season. He struck out two and walked one.

After scoring three runs in the first -- highlighted by a Derek Jeter single and Hideki Matsui's two-run homer -- the Yankees scored one run each in the following three innings.

Jeter ripped an RBI single in the second -- his 2,215th career hit -- Jorge Posada brought in a run with a single to right in the third and Doug Mientkiewicz hit a solo homer deep into right field in the fourth.

Curt Schilling started for Boston, giving up 12 hits and six runs (five earned) in six innings of work. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter in the loss.

Kyle Farnsworth relieved Pettitte and allowed two runs in the eighth, including a solo home run to Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp.

The win clinched a series victory for New York, who improved to 21-24 on the season, 9 1/2 games behind the American League East-leading Red Sox.

Doug Mientkiewicz (wrist) is hoping to be back in the lineup the first week in August, but realistically it will probably be closer to mid-August.
"I'd have to see significant improvement to get back that quickly," Mientkiewicz said. He is scheduled to be examined in New York on Thursday and hopes to be cleared for baseball activities at that time.

Darrell Rasner (finger) was finally able to play catch on flat ground, throwing from 75 feet Saturday.
Rasner will do so again Sunday. "It feels fine," he said. "It's just a matter of building my arm strength."

Jason Giambi (foot) is in Tampa Bay and is expected to begin working out at the Yankees' minor-league complex this week.
He has told people within the organization he might need two weeks to get ready - however, it's more than likely Giambi won't return until the middle of next month. He'll probably share most of his time with Johnny Damon at DH when he is able to return.

The Yankees still had 13 pitchers on their roster last night, but that is going to change soon, according to Torre. It could come in the form of a deal for a right-handed hitting infielder who can play multiple positions such as the Devil Rays' Jorge Cantu or Ty Wigginton or a recall of Chris Basak from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
