Rugby'Six Nations B' gets under way

Teams for Saturday's matches announced
Portugal were the surprise winners in the weather-disrupted European Nations Cup ('Six Nations B') in 2003. It was the first time they have won the competition whose big guns have been Romania, Georgia and Russia. The Lobos of Portugal added a Grand Slam to their competition win. This year they open their defence of their title against Georgia.

In 2003 Portugal played three of their five matches at home. This year they play four away. Their only home game is their fourth, against Russia in Coimbra.

The Portuguese coach, Tomaz Morais, has named a squad for the match in the National Stadium in Tblisi.

Only two of the players play abroad - João Uva who plays for Santboiana in Cataluña and Pedro Leal who plays for Brive. The rest of the squad play in Portugal.

Like many teams Georgia have a new coach - a Georgian trio this time in Paata Narimanashvili, Malkhaz Tcheishvili and David Chavleishvili.

They also have new players in the squad - Bidzina Samkharadze, Levan Ghvaberidze, Zviad Maissuradze, Lexo Gugava, George Kutarashvili, Michael Sujashvili and Rezo Belkania

The Portuguese squad: Rui Cordeiro (AA Coimbra), Joaquim Ferreira (CDUP), José Carlos Sequeira (Belenenses), António Sarmento (CDUP), Paulo Santos (Belenenses), Bernardo Mota (GD Direito), Paulo Gonçalves (Benfica), Marcello D'Orey (CDUP), Lourenço Andrade (Belenenses), Vasco Uva (Direito), António Cunha (Belenenses), Paulo Murinello (CDUL), Sebastião Cunha (Belenenses), João Uva (Santboiana), Luis Pissarra (AEIS Agronomia), Pedro Leal (Brive), Filipe Grenho (Benfica), Francisco Moreira (Belenenses), Diogo Mateus (Belenenses), Frederico Sousa (Direito), David Mateus (Belenenses), João A. Lima (CDUP), António Aguilar (Direito), Gonçalo Malheiro (CDUP).

Georgia: 15 Bessik Khamashuridze, 11 Irakli Machkhaneli, 14 Makho Urjukashvili; 13 Zedo Zibzibadze, 12 Kakha Alania, 10 Boba Kvinikhidze; 9 Bidzina Samkharadze, 8 Besso Udessiani, 7 Rati Urushadze; 6 Zviad Maissuradze, 5 Mamuka Gorgodze; 4 Ilia Zedguinidze (captain), 3 Avtandil Kopaliani, 2 Levan Ghvaberidze, 1 David Khinchaguishvili
Replacements: 16 George Kutarashvili, 17 Michael Sujashvili ,18 Zurab Mtchedlishvili, 19 Rezo Belkania, 20 Irakli Modebadze21 Nono Andghuladze, 22 Lexo Gugava.

Romania and Georgia were the only teams from the 'Six Nations B' at the 2003 World Cup. They start at home against the Czech Republic at Stadion Steaua in Bucharest.

The Czechs got into the competition for the first time last year and ended a creditable fourth - above Russia and Spain. Romania ended second to Portugal. When the two teams met in Prague last season, Romania won 42-5. There is no reason expect anything but a comfortable Romanian victory this year.

Romania have a new coach in Philippe Sauton, a Frenchman and former Toulon player. He is assisted by Virgil Nastase. Romania also have a new captain in burly No.8 Sorin Socol, who plays for Agen.

There are - unusually for recent times - fewer players playing in France - three in the starting team with another four on the bench.

Of the Czechs who play in France, they are mainly in Federale One, the amateur league. They are a young side with only one player over 30.

The teams:

Romania: 15 Ioan Teodeorescu (U Cluj), 14 Bogdan Voicu (U Cluj), 13 Cristian Sauan (Ilcev Rovigo), 12 Romeo Gontineac (Aurillac), 11 Constantin Gheara (RC Farul), 10 Danut Dumbrava (Steaua Bucuresti), 9 Iulian Andrei (Steaua Bucuresti), 7 Madalin Baraulea (RC Farul), 8 Sorin Socol (Agen, captain), 6 Costica Mersoiu (Steaua Bucuresti), 5 Florin Tatu (Steaua Bucuresti), 4 Cristian Petre (Métro Racing), 3 Marcel Socaciu (Ilcev Rovigo), 2 Bogdan Zebega (Steaua Bucuresti), 1 Petrisor Toderasc (RC Farul).
Replacements: 16 Dragos Dima (Toulouse), 17 Cezar Popescu (Tarbes), 18 Teodor Munteanu (Steaua Bucuresti), 19 Marius Tigora (Steaua Bucuresti), 20 Alexandru Lupu (Steaua Bucuresti), 21 Ionut Tofan (Métro Racing), 22 Gabriel Brezoianu (Dax).

Czech Republic: 15 Jan Rohlik (StNazaire), 14 Zdenek Zak (RC Praga), 13 Pavel Camrda (RC Ricany), 12 Martin Pekarek (RC Ricany, 11 Martin Jagr (RC Toulon), 10 Martin Kafka (RC Cast res), 9 Pavel Syrovy (RC Praga), 8 Jan Machacek (RC Ricany), 7 Ladislav Vondrasek (Bracknell RFC),6 Martin Pekacek (StNazaire), 5 Miroslav Nemecek (RC Rican y), 4 Jan Zila (RC Tatra Smichov), 3 Pavel Stastny (RC Vichy), 2 Lukas Rapant (StNazaire), 1 Roman Suster (StNazaire).
Replacements: 16 Jiri Skall (RC Ricany), 17 Pavel Hocke (RC Tatra Smichov), 18 Lukas Hudrment (RC Slavia), 19 Robert Voves (StNazaire), 20 Tomas Krejci, 21 Martin Snidal (RC Vyskov), 22 Tomas Nevicky (RC Ricany).

Spain, who tasted glory at the 1999 World Cup, tasted bitter defeat last season when they lost every one of their 'Six Nations B' matches.

Last year Russia beat Spain twice in Spain but lost to them in Krasnodar. It was a year of grievous disappointment for the Russians who were flung out of the World Cup for playing intelligible players in preliminary rounds - recruits from South Africa along with their South African coach James Stofberg.

Apart from the three at Montauban, the Russian players play in Russia - and it has a very new look.

The teams

Portugal 19-Georgia 14

Portugal starter to best way with a win in frozen weather and 40,000 in attendance

Portugal his the B division defending champion

what you have to do to get promoted?

Seria, novamente o "oito" a diminuir a marca. Portugal ainda viu um ensaio (limpo) anulado e, no cair do pano, o marcador de serviço fixou a marca em 19-14, com um pontapé de ressalto.

No dia anterior a Roménia ganhou à República Checa (55-11) e a Rússia à Espanha (36-6).

Portugal scalp Georgia in 6N 'B'

European Nations Cup kicks off with an upset
Portugal claimed the largest scalp of their history on Sunday by defeating 2003 Rugby World Cup competitors Georgia in Tblisi in the European Nations Cup - the Six Nations 'B'.

The 19-14 defeat in the Georgian capital will be a big blow for the 'Lelos' who were widely touted as Grand Slam contenders following their trip to Australia last year.

This was the first time that current European Nations champions Portugal have won away against Georgia, and the impressive victory will give them a boost ahead of their remaining games against Romania, the Czech Republic, Russia and Spain.

The other games of the opening weekend saw Romania defeat the Czechs 55-11, and Russians maul the Spaniards 36-6.

ARMSTRONG TERMINA NO PELOTÃO

Armstrong Tests Form in Portuguese Race
Tue Feb 17, 3:29 PM ET Add Sports - AP to My Yahoo!

By BARRY HATTON, Associated Press Writer

ALBUFEIRA, Portugal - Lance Armstrong is thinking big this season, but he's starting small. The Texan's preparation in his bid for a sixth straight victory at the Tour de France begins Wednesday at the five-day Volta ao Algarve — Tour of the Algarve — a minor professional cycling event.

Armstrong's debut in the race in southern Portugal is also his first competitive outing of 2004. The Tour of the Algarve comes a couple of weeks before his usual season opener, the better-known Tour of Murcia in Spain.

As usual, Armstrong's schedule with his U.S. Postal Service team is built around the Tour de France, which opens July 3.

Johan Bruyneel, the team's director and tactical mastermind, said Armstrong plans to spend all of April in the United States, taking part in the Tour of Georgia.

"The main attraction is the date, because we're starting racing earlier this year," Bruyneel told The Associated Press. "The Algarve weather's also good, and the roads are, too."

He said the race would provide a gentle start to the season, easing Armstrong into competition.

"It's good to start in a relaxed way, without too much pressure. It's not a very hard race," Bruyneel said.

The U.S. Postal Service team spent 10 days training last month in Solvanga, Calif. It is sending eight riders to Portugal, where Armstrong will be joined by the team's new signings — Jose Azevedo, Patrick McCarty, Daniel Rincon, and Benjamin Noval.

"The team is in pretty decent shape," Bruyneel said.

Armstrong, though, is the star of the show.

The Volta ao Algarve, in its 30th edition, hasn't attracted riders of Armstrong's caliber since five-time Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain participated eight years ago.

Portugal's Algarve province is about 120 miles south of Lisbon, the capital. The Algarve is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its long beaches, calm sea and mild climate.

The coast is flat, but a few miles inland, the Algarve's foothills gradually rise to altitudes around 3,000 feet.

The course is flat during the first two days of racing. The riders cover 93 miles on the opening day and 113 miles on Day 2.

Day 3 includes a climb up to the Algarve's highest peak, while the next stage is a 15-mile individual time trial.

The last stage is 111 miles, including three climbs.

Romania and Portugal meet in crunch ENC match

Preparations in Constanta
Portugal surprised Romania with a first-ever victory in 2003. That places the Lobos two points above the Oaks in the two-year cycle of the championship. That means that this year's match at Stadium Farul in Constanta is vital to both sides.

The Portuguese started their 2004 campaign with a good 19-14 victory over the Lelos of Georgia who, like Romania, were at the 2003 Rugby World Cup's final tournament, something Portugal have never enjoyed.

Last year the teams met in gentle Lisbon. The Portuguese may well find ancient Constanta on the Black Sea bleaker. But then they have just been to Tblisi. In fact they have not been home travelling straight from the Georgian capital to the Royal Hotel in Constanta as they prepare for this vital encounter.

The Portuguese squad thus has no changes from the squad that marched to Georgia.

Phillipe Sauton, the new Romanian coach, fortified by a good start to his career with the big win over the Czech Republic, has announced his squad. In comes Valentin Maftei with Ioan Teodeorescu moving to the right-wing in place of Bogdan Voicu who goes to the left-wing in place of Constantin Gheara, a try-scorer last week. The only changes in the pack are in the front row where Razvan Mavrodin comes into hooker and Dragos Dima comes off the bench to prop.

Missing are some of Romania's more experienced players - Ovidiu Tonita (injured), Petru Balan (injured), Augustin Petrache (retired from international rugby) and Gabriel Brezoianu (not selected).

The teams:

Portuguese: Rui Cordeiro (AA Coimbra), Joaquim Ferreira (CDUP), José Carlos Sequeira (Belenenses), António Sarmento (CDUP), Paulo Santos (Belenenses), Bernardo Mota (GD Direito), Paulo Gonçalves (Benfica), Marcello D'Orey (CDUP), Lourenço Andrade (Belenenses), Vasco Uva (Direito), António Cunha (Belenenses), Paulo Murinello (CDUL), Sebastião Cunha (Belenenses), who is only 19 years of age whereas António is 35, João Uva (Santboiana), Luis Pissarra (AEIS Agronomia), Pedro Leal (Brive), who is 19, Filipe Grenho (Benfica), Francisco Moreira (Belenenses), Diogo Mateus (Belenenses), Frederico Sousa (Direito), David Mateus (Belenenses), João A. Lima (CDUP), António Aguilar (Direito), Gonçalo Malheiro (CDUP).

Romania: 15 Valentin Maftei (Aurillac), 14 Ioan Teodorescu (U Cluj), 13 Cristian Sauan (Rovigo), 12 Romeo Gontineac (Aurillac), 11 Bogdan Voicu (U Cluj), 10 Danut Dumbrava (Steaua Bucuresti), 9 Iulian Andrei (Steaua Bucuresti), 8 Sorin Socol (Agen, captain), 7 Costica Mersoiu (Steaua Bucuresti), 6 Madalin Baraulea (RC Farul), 5 Petre Cristian (Métro-Racing), 4 Florin Tatu (Steaua Bucuresti), 3 Cezar Popescu (Tarbes), 2 Razvan Mavrodin (Tarbes), 1 Dragos Dima (Toulouse).
Replacements: 16 Petrisor Toderasc (RC Farul), 17 Bogdan Zebega (Steaua Bucuresti), 18 Marcel Socaciu (Rovigo), 19 Augustin Petrichei (Perpignan), 20 Lucian Sirbu (Métro-Racing), 21 Ionut Tofan (Métro-Racing), 22 Constantin Gheara (RC Farul).
