Queiroz Poised To Take Portugal Job - Report
Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz is thought to be on the verge of accepting the post of Portugal manager, it is being reported by local media sources...
Current incumbent Felipe Luiz Scolari is leaving the job after Euro 2008 to take up the reigns at Chelsea and it is believed that Queiroz, 55, will now leave Old Trafford to replace him as the national coach.
The news will be a double blow to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson who has worked closely with the Portuguese since 2002. Ferguson, is thought to be keen for the Portuguese to take over from him as Manchester United manager when the Scot finally retires.
However, Queiroz is also known to have a good relationship with compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo and at a time when the club is fighting desperately to hold onto their star player, the news of Queiroz’s departure will not go down well.
The Portuguese coach is currently in his second spell as assistant manager at Manchester United, having also previously had a brief spell in charge of Real Madrid.
Aside from this spells in club management he has also been involved in international football. Queiroz has managed the United Arab Emirates and South African national teams as well as working with the Portuguese under 20 side.
The offer to take over as Portugal boss may just have come at the right time for Queiroz. He has just enjoyed a successful season at United helping steer them to a Premier League and Champions League double but the lure of becoming the coach of the national side would undoubtedly test his resolve.
The only reason why I like this move for Portugal is Queiroz closeness with Ronaldo. Maybe Ronaldo has something to do with this possible move considering his almost certain move to Real Madrid.
