Portugal unhappy but still hoping
Thursday 14 June 2007by Simon Hartfrom Groningen
e-mail Print
It was raining as the Portugal players arrived for training in Vries on Thursday afternoon and the dark skies reflected the mood in the squad the day after their 2-1 loss against the Netherlands.
'Depending on others'
"We feel dissatisfied," defender Amoreirinha told the small group of journalists gathered in the Vako clubhouse. "None of us thought we would be depending on others, but that's where we are now." Precisely where Portugal are is third place in Group A and needing both three points against Israel on Saturday and a defeat for Belgium against the Netherlands.
Grievances
There is a strong sense of injustice in the Portugal camp prompted by decisions they felt went against them in Wednesday's game against the Dutch. Assistant coach Rui Caçador used Thursday's press conference as a platform to air their grievances which also appeared on the Portuguese Football Federation's website. Yet Amoreirinha admitted that, as against Belgium, Portugal had started slowly against the Netherlands.
Possible play-off
"We didn't have a good first half again," he said. "At the same time, the teams we've played are good ones and it's not easy to be dominant for 90 minutes." The CF Estrela da Amadora player is expecting another exacting match against an Israel side who, while unable to reach the semi-finals, still have something to play for. With the top two in each group qualifying for the Olympic Games, the third-place finishers in Group A could yet gain a second chance in the form of a play-off against the third team in Group B given England, currently second in that section, cannot send a team to Beijing.
Still hoping
"Israel haven't made life easy for their opponents and they still have an objective in this tournament, just like us," Amoreirinha added. "We don't expect an easy game but we'll go out with the same spirit to try to win and to get to the semi-finals. Although qualifying for the Olympics would be the lesser of two evils at the moment we are not thinking in this manner. We want to win and then wait, hoping Belgium will lose."

Portugal Shit there pants yet again. Guess what this is a fact,

We complain that when a Ref sets the presedent on what a foul or what is a Penelty shot, then he has to be consistant the whole game. He was not. The foul against the Portugees player was IMO more obveouse than the one that the Ref granted a PS for. Vary poor job by the ref. I do beleive that the ref was pissed at our players and purposefully did not want to give them a penalty for that reason. We are paying a huge price now because of our senior NT diving all over the place.
Now, did we loose because of that non call ? No we lost it from our coach not making the correct subs or not starting to right players. Our players also, at times, did not show enough heart in this game. Nani a perfect example of no heart.
