Default Importance of having a left defender

check the 3rd goal by Germany Lahm against Turkey

our weakness on this year european cup, was not the striker position, but the LD position and the goalkeeper position

have your say

by the way Postiga disallowed goal against Swiss was a clean goal.

we don't have a decent left defender and a tremendows Left side since the Euro 84 semi final team of Alvaro Magalhaes and Chalana.

I agree Frank because Postiga has really shown that he can be a decent striker. Portugal need to find a left back and hopefully they can either convert Miguel to that position or bring in Antunes.

thats true. Funny thing is that Lahm is also right footed like Ferreira and still does a great job on the left. Also, Postiga's goal was definitely onside, too bad they took it from him, could have had two goals in Euro 2008.

Postiga is one of those special guys who play better for his country than his club..He also scored some beautiful goals in some critical games..He should be Portugal clear cut number 9...

I've always thought he was a good player. You're right, his Portugal record speaks for itself, about 1 goal every 3 games. Always felt sorry for what happened to him at Tottenham because he's a better player than that.

Portugal lacks a strong defender on the left, and this has been our weakness for a while. We can not just plug in a slow sloppy Paulo Ferreira and expect the problem to be relieved. This was detrimental to our squad.

agreed, Portugal' striker is NOT a weakness

main weakness is goalkeeping and left defender.

we scored 2 goals from strikers, and nuno gomes played well the whole tournament.

in fact, Nuno Gomes played better then more renowned strikers such as Luca Toni of Italy and Mario Gomez of Germany just to name a couple.

helder postiga played well when called upon.

Portugguese strikers CAN SCORE... we dont need the best striker in the world all we need is a capable one they get alot of support and nuno and helder played well this euro.

Portugal needs a left wing back? Or a left defender that creates offense? You lot play with wingers, there is no need for rushing fullbacks.

More wing play is not going to make Portugal win any trophys. Better defensive coverage in the midfield, and a solid striker will.

Having said this, offense is not a problem with this nation.

Exactly, a LB who is strong, fairly tall, quick and can defend well is all we need.

Now to find one....

That's what I said all along.... Antunes will fill that void. If Nelson Oliveira pans out, at 18 tear old, look for him to play at the senior level.

Pele/Manelele will make an awesome defensive/offensive tandem, and they can score.

Antunes will fill nothing yet! He does not play at Roma, he needs to move club and prove himself if he is going to represent the Portuguese NT.

Antunes will get more playing time.... it was his first year with the club, give him time.

We have to Scout, it is our only option, Ferreira will never be called up, again.
