Spain/Portugal World Cup 18 bid

Spain-Portugal 2018 Bid Gathers Pace
Spain and Portugal's joint bid to host the 2018 World Cup will take another step forward when the Spanish Football Federation set meet with FIFA president Sepp Blatter at the end of April.

galleria zoom Blatter announced in February that FIFA had received a bid from Spain and Portugal to host the 2018 competition and will now meet with the Spanish Football Federation to discuss the proposal in greater detail.
Spanish Football Federation president Ángel Villar has chartered flights for the forty-two club presidents from the Primera and Segunda Divisions to attend the meeting, along with the nineteen presidents from the autonomous federations.
The party will meet with Blatter in Zurich on the 28th April, before traveling to Nyon, where they will be received by Uefa president Michel Platini on the 29th.
The primary topic of discussion is thought to be the infrastructure that the joint bid can provide for the hosting of the tournament, an area in which the Spain-Portugal bid triumphs, as between the two countries they are able to offer eight stadiums in the five star category and six more that have a four star rating.
However, Spain and Portugal face strong opposition in their quest to host the competition, with the likes of Australia, Mexico, England, The United States, Canada, China and Russia having all made their interest clear, and the talks are currently just at the preliminary stage, as FIFA look to get a better handle on what each of the bidders can offer.

Well if the 2014 World cup is to be in Brazil, I doubt the 2018 World cup would be given to Canada, USA or Mexico as they tend to alternate between contintent/hemispheres. A joint bid by Portugal/Spain would be the sure bet for success among the remaining countries mentioned. And depending on how well things go in South Africa in 2010 Fifa might not risk giving countries like Australia, China or Russia a chance. I do know that after everything Portugal put into building the new stadiums for the 2004 Euro, getting this event would certainly help out the economy.

It depends on a lot of things, I can already imagine the two countries fighting over where the first match will be and where the final will be........

Mundial ibérico pode ser realidade
R.B.C.

I think this would be fantastic. Portugal could do with organizing another major competition, even though we'll be together with the spaniards, it's better than nothing. hopefully we can get this project going.
just one thing though, Portugal will host 1/3 of the matches at most, since we only really have 3 stadiums which are good enough for a world cup (capacity-wise), whereas Spain have about 5.

I really do hope this idea becomes a reality for two reasons:
1. It would just be fantastic, plain and simple. Two countries who love futebol and would do the tournament justice. Also great conditions from stadiums to weather.
2. It would put an end, in a sense, to a rivalry that is outdated. Fighting over land from centuries ago no longer has any logic, its all in the past. These two countries should support each other because, in a way, they are very similar. I am not, however, one of those people who believes in a united Iberia, we similar but not that similar

fifa usually needs world cup matches to be in quality stadiums with over 30 or 40,000 capacity
only the big 3 stadiums fit this criterion
while I think stadiums like Afronso Henriques, Estadio Algarve, etc are fine for world cup group stage matches I donno if Fifa would agree!

Just look at the Beira Mar example, they build a big stadium and now the place looks empty
I missed the old stadium, we had advantage, now we don't have any field advantage
