Default Figo tipped for Portugal post

channel4.com - Football Italia

Figo tipped for Portugal post Tuesday 24 June, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter veteran Luis Figo is reportedly in the frame to take the Portuguese national team hot seat.

Luiz Felipe Scolari vacated the Portugal bench to join Chelsea after his side exited Euro 2008 at the quarter-final stage following a 3-2 defeat against Germany.

Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz and Brazilian boss Zico have been suggested as candidates, but it seems that Figo may have a chance of a surprise appointment.

“The Portuguese Football Federation President has told me that he has a surprise up his sleeve and I thought of Figo,” respected TV pundit Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa revealed on RTP.

“Gilberto Madail in fact underlined that the new tactician doesn’t have great experience as a Coach, but that he has an excellent CV as a player and that he still thinks as a player.”

Figo’s future has been unclear. The former Barcelona star was frozen out at Inter under Roberto Mancini, but he had seemed keen to play one more year under new boss Jose Mourinho.

Would be crazy. I'm sure we would all love him to take over at some point but for me, i'd like him to take over after he manages a couple of club teams and has a good track record. The national team should not be taken lightly.

Yes, he's perfect for the FPF president. Not the managerial spot.... that belongs to Zico.

Figo can do it, if he can get a experience assistant

somebody like a kick ass guy Alvaro Magalhaes, who by the way just took the Covilha promoted coaching job

Figo is no way going to be the next NT manager. This job is going to someone experienced. A great player does not make a great manager. Look at Jose Mourinho, he was a terrible player.

I think this is job search has ended. FPF will announce Zico as the coach in mid july.

I don't think Figo has the right temperment or personality to take on the hot seat of a national team of the country he is from. He has never managed before, I think this would be a terrible mistake.

I doubt figo will coach

First of all, hes still planning on playing for another season with Inter

Secondly, I read interviews where he said he doesnt think he will end up coaching after his playing career finishes

and thirdly, hes never coached before and doesnt have the necessary qualifications to coach the nt.

The best coach will be Zico, he's already coached in the World Cup and have a decent record as head coach. I'm pretty sure it's a done deal considering that he resign from Fenerbache around the same time the Scolari move was announced.

I think it will actually be Jose Pekerman. He will work with the youth and the senior squad.

By the way this is my 3,000 post. Look at all that precious time in my life I will not get back. I could have been doing something much more productive!
