It's a generational phase, we might dry up our talent in the next few years but who knows.

come on guys

(BTW Thanks for the rep )

I agree and was tempted to mention Eusebio and co. but I think z187 means in the modern era...after all Portugal did not Qualify for world cup post '66 (bar 86...where they only reached the first round) and it was the 'Golden' generation of the late 90's/early 00's that paved the way for modern success in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006.

The players that you mention were agreeably noted on the world stage during their time, but then Portuguese national recognition effectively died before the golden era. (This links to the original post I made)

That is why, despite the quality of the '66 and prior generation, the golden era of the late 90's was the major element behind Portugal entering the world stage.

(BTW I was born in 90! ...I can respect these players of old, but I cannot honestly assess them!)

The talent will still be coming out and the next generattion will be our Platinum generation..I remember critics saying that Portugal Golden generation was coming to an end without anyting to show for all their talented players, but these guys where replace with our Diamond generation...My opinion Portugal will continue to develope great talent because of the economic situation in Portugal..Soccer has now become a commodity in Portugal...

Good Points. Also, I think that the initiation made by the golden generation has cemented Portugal as a world giant. Now that the generation has birthed many other talents, they youth will continue to grow and accumilate.

I thinks it was simply a case of needing a 'kick start'; once the like of Figo lit the world stage, the interest and development was immediately woken up. A lot of teams experience the same thing. When you dwell in the shadows sometimes you only need a glimmer of light to emerge.
This has happened and i expect Portugal to remain among the world elite.

I see the point you are trying to make, but I have to say that these players were instumental to the Portuguese football recognition. (Euro 2000, for me, got the world talking about Portugal. Although Cristiano has been a contributing factor to Portuguese recognition he has not been soul flag bearer- just a component behind the recognition of these former players).

and none of them have opened more eyes than cristiano..
i understand what you mean.. im not saying portuguese footbal is just now being recognized.. im saying ronaldo has opened the door for more oppurtunities.. the fact that manchester united went to lisbon for nani & anderson says A LOT.. portuguese football has become the new litterbox for big teams to browse through.. and this has a lot to do with ronny's success.

i think some of you are missing the point.. i never said portugal never had great talent..
but portugal's recognition started with the "golden generation".. which consisted of rui costa, figo etc...
and NOW, ronaldo is transcending that is what im saying.. he's made it bigger.

Portugal has always had allot of great players. Being a small country, our players did not always get the recognition that they deserved. Our lack of success internationally had more to do with dam Portuguese politics in the dressing room than anything else. I believe (and this might be before allot of peoples time hear) that the team that we sent to Mexico was also a vary vary talented team. The players did not get the recognition because at that point in time our teams still could afford to keep their players. That Mexico WC team was full of stars.

Now, having said all that, CR may vary well prove to be the best player that Portugal has ever had. For those who remember. How would you guys compare Figo to players like Carlos Manuel, Humberto Coelho. I think these players were vary close in talent, but Figo got the international attention. Comments anyone ?

i completely understand and agree.. there have been many many great portuguese players that have been shafted.. guys like figo & rui costa cant be hated though.. it's not their fault for the many greats that were before them.. and yes i do think ronny will be the greatest portuguese player ever when he's done.. he may not be "the best" in many opinions but i don't think you can debate that ronny will end up being the most recognizable portuguese soccer figure..

Another note worth mentioning, Has anyone notice how fast our talent has grown in the past years? I mean the maturity and the progression of these stars now playing with big clubs..... Ronaldo, Quaresma, nani, manelele & Veloso!

These kids are young -- I'm excited to see how they will gel together at the euros.

Btw, manelele should be starting with the NT, he is vital component!

Chelana(don't think I spelt his name write) Rui Barros and Paulo Futre paved the way for all our stars today, they were the really 1st players to make it abroad. Futre wanted to be the new Chelana Figo wanted to be the new Futre when he was growing up.
Q7 and CR, Nani etc all want to be the new Figo to be better. they all take inspiration from each other to better them.

Ronaldo is becoming one of the best free kickers in the world. That Free kick goal against Portsmouth was absolutely perfect.
