"As a player I expect to take part in a great championship. As far as the team is concerned, I believe Portugal can win the World Cup in Germany, although the big favourite is Brazil," he told the Record sports daily.
The FIFA World Player of the Year in 2001 has said he will retire from international football after the World Cup finals in Germany.
Figo, 33, announced he was taking an indefinite break from international football shortly after Portugal's 1-0 loss to Greece in the final of the Euro 2004 in Lisbon.
But in May Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari, who led his native Brazil to the World Cup in 2002, recalled Figo for World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Estonia after the player said he was ready to return to the squad.
Portugal are in Group D along with Iran, Mexico and debutants Angola in the first round of the 2006 World Cup.
MY Opinion
with Scolari has the coach the best Portuguese players might not make the trip,
players like Baia and Quaresma on top form my be replace by Ricardo and Postiga, I just don't get it
we do have a better then in 02, much younger, the team in 04 was a bunch of old veterans like F Couto, P Bento, Jorge Costa, Joao V Pinto, Rui Jorge, etc
today the whole team his under 30 with the exception of Figo
central defenders will be Ricardo Carvalho,[Chelsea] Jorge Andrade [Corunha] Fernando Meira [Stuggart]
RD will be either Miguel, P Ferreira or Youngester Nelson [Benfica]
LD still open with B Ribeiro, P Ferreira or N Valente
defence midfield I believe will be Costinha and Petit, by far Petit having the best season
the playmaker will be Deco, by far our best player
Quaresma should be making the team or Scolari will be gone.
C Ronaldo will peak before the world cup
Figo experience
Simao on fire, can take over at any time
Striker Nuno Gomes having his best season
Pauleta leading the french league in goals
Boa Morte can play
Hugo Almeida should take the place of Postiga
we do have a much younger team, but first we have to make to the second phase, only time will tell.

thread unstick we now got a Portuguese national team forum
