Air Malta : Official Airline partner of
PORTSMOUTH FC

Quote:
Air Malta and the 2008 English FA Cup winners Portsmouth FC have successfully concluded a two-year commercial agreement. The deal, signed today, sees Air Malta becoming the official airline partner of Portsmouth FC and both organisations working together on various joint marketing opportunities.

The two organisations have agreed to drive together a variety of co-marketing and advertising opportunities both during the Barclays Premier League matches of Portsmouth FC and also during the club’s games in the FA, UEFA and League cups. The activities include LED perimeter advertising at the club’s Fratton Park stadium, advertising on backdrops during Portsmouth FC interviews, advertising in the matchday programme, websites links and promotions, brand marketing and on a host of other marketing communications systems.

Portsmouth Football Club, nicknamed Pompey, was formed in 1898 with John Brickwood, owner of the local brewery, as chairman. The club has been a member of the Barclays Premier League since 2003 and were FA Cup Winners in 1939 & 2008, which earned them a place in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup, the club's first time playing competitive European football. Pompey won back-to-back top-flight titles in 1949 and 1950, one of only five clubs since the second world war to do so. The club’s official emblem contains a gold star and crescent on a blue shield, which is said to date back to King Richard I granting the city of Portsmouth "a crescent of gold on a shade of azure, with a blazing star of eight points" which he had taken from the Byzantine Emperor's standard after capturing Cyprus. The club plays its home games at Fratton Park, the only football stadium in the English professional leagues to be located off the British mainland.

The agreement was signed by Air Malta’s General Manager Marketing & Product, Brian Bartolo and Peter Storrie, Chief Executive of Portsmouth FC.
