TIMBERS, CAROLINA DRAW 0-0 SUNDAY AT PGE PARK
Josh Wicks records third shutout as
Timbers remain unbeaten at home

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers battled expansion side, the Carolina Railhawks, to a 0-0 draw in front of 5,026 at PGE Park Sunday night. The Timbers were held scoreless for just the second time this season despite an extra man as a Carolina player was sent off in the first half. Led by goalkeeper Josh Wicks, the Timbers defense continued its streak of shut out play.

Wicks recorded his third consecutive shut out of the season as the Timbers (3-1-2, 11pts) have not allowed a goal in 282 minutes. With the draw against Carolina (3-2-4, 13pts), the Timbers maintain an unblemished record of 3-0-2 at home.

The Timbers couldn't capitalize on a one-man advantage during the final 51 minutes of play. Carolina midfielder Jonny Steele was ejected from the match in the 39th minute after being issued his second caution of the night with a hard tackle on defender Scot Thompson.

Both teams had scoring opportunities through the first half. In the 22nd minute, Carolina forward Chris Carrieri chipped a shot wide of the far post from the top left corner of the six-yard box.

In the 28th minute, midfielder Andrew Gregor nearly scored his fifth goal of the season with a 19-yard free kick from the top right corner of the box. His shot bent around Carolina's four-man wall towards the top near corner of the goal but Railhawks goalkeeper Chris McClellan snagged the ball before it could sneak in.

The Timbers out shot Carolina 6-2 in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net. The Timbers had 11 total shots in the match.

With an 11-day layoff until their next regular-season match, the Timbers face Montreal and Rochester on the road in back-to-back matches June 8 and 9. The Timbers will play a scrimmage on Saturday, June 2 against the Oregon United Soccer Academy U-23 team at Sheldon High School in Eugene. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. For more information visit, http://www.oregonunitedsoccer.org/.

Notes: The Timbers surpassed the 500,000 regular-season attendance mark Sunday night. The Timbers 500,000 fan was Valerie Roska from Wilsonville, Ore. . Midfielder Lawrence Olum made his first career start against Carolina . Midfielder Tom Taylor made his Timbers debut entering the match as a sub in the second half . There were 42 fouls called in the match including seven yellow cards and one red.

Portland moves back into first
Atlanta alone in fourth

9/1-2 Round-Up: The Timbers snagged a late 1-0 win in Carolina Saturday to move back into first in the USL-1 table ahead of Seattle and Montreal. Meanwhile, in a battle between two of the three teams tied for fourth, Atlanta downed Puerto Rico 3-1 to give themselves an advantage in the race for top playoff seeds... Miami rallied from two down Sunday to top Charleston 3-2 to save their playoff hopes.

Portland Timbers News Release - portlandtimbers.com: Entry

Friday, March 21, 2008

PORTLAND, OR -- Portland Timbers head coach Gavin Wilkinson announced today that assistant coaches Jim Brazeau, Jim Rilatt and Rod Underwood will return to the Timbers’ sidelines for the 2008 season.

Brazeau returns for his seventh season as the Timbers’ goalkeeping coach, while Rilatt and Underwood enter their second seasons on Wilkinson’s staff.

“It’s great to have all three coaches back,” said Wilkinson. “We worked well together last season and all have the expectation to succeed. Each one is committed to the game and the future success of the Timbers.”

Now entering his seventh season with the organization, Brazeau served as the Timbers’ goalkeeping coach from 2001-05 under former head coach Bobby Howe, and then returned in 2007 as a member of Wilkinson’s staff. Named the 2006 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year, Brazeau also serves as the head coach of the men’s soccer program at Pacific University in Forest Grove., Ore. He played his collegiate career at Pacific University and Oregon State University prior to a six-year professional career.

Rilatt, who enters his second season with the Timbers, brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to the Timbers’ staff. During his 14 years of coaching at the high school level in the state of Oregon, Rilatt was a five-time Mt. Hood Conference Coach of the Year selection. He has also coached at several local colleges and currently serves as an assistant for the men’s team at Pacific University. In 1994, Rilatt led FC Portland’s U-18 team, which included current Timbers players Andrew Gregor and Chris Brown, to the U.S. Youth Soccer national championship.

Underwood returns for a second season with the Timbers in 2008. An experienced coach at the professional level, Underwood led the Albuquerque Geckos, a former USL club, to the USL Second Division title in 1997, and is the co-author of the book, “Understanding Soccer,” which was published in 1993. He currently holds advanced coaching certificates from the Netherlands and Wales in addition to his USSF “A” license. Underwood began his professional career in 1989 and saw time with two former USL clubs - the New Mexico Chiles and Albuquerque.

The Timbers face Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes on March 28 and Gonzaga University on March 30 as they prepare for the 2008 USL First Division campaign. Portland’s 2008 regular season opens April 17 against the Puerto Rico Islanders at PGE Park. Season-ticket packages, flex plans, group discounts and party suites are available by contacting the Timbers ticket office at (503) 553-5555.

Timbers shut out Miami FC 4-0

Portland, September 4, 2008 - Miami FC traveled to the northwest on Thursday to try to take down the Portland Timbers. Miami was led into this duel by USL-1 points leader and scoring leader Alex Afonso. After a difficult home stand against the Minnesota Thunder that saw the Blues lose the first and draw the second, Miami aimed to continue on their mission to the playoffs. The Timbers sat tied on points going into Thursday’s clash but they took all 3 points after a 4-0 win against Miami. The Blues, who began with an attack minded lineup, looked to put some firepower on the field and steer their way to the playoffs. Yet pair of penalties and two headers were able to put Miami FC away.

It was Portland who would strike first with a goal in the 3rd minute. After a quick change of play down the right flank a cross was sent in and an unmarked Byron Alvarez was at the six yard box all alone. His well placed header shot down to the bottom right side of goal leaving no chance for USL-1 shutouts leader Josh Saunders.

The first 15 minutes had some good back and forth action yet there were no real quality chances at goal for each team besides the early goal.

The always active Ansu Toure was one of the Blues who saw a lot of time on the ball while trying to orchestrate from his midfield position and link up with Alex Afonso in the first 20 minutes.

Miami was put in good position in the 23rd minute from a foul suffered by Sean Fraser. From about 20 yards out a free kick was guided toward the goal but the ball struck the Timbers’ wall.

Josh Saunders had a great save in the 30th minute from a free kick played in from the right flank by the Timbers. The ball drifted into the area and a Portland player was able to get a foot to it but Saunders did well to grab it firmly without any problems.

In the 35th minute Miami had its most dangerous attack of the first half when Ansu Toure slid his way through the Portland defense at the edge of the area then a good pass to Sean Fraser was reciprocated by Fraser who flicked a nice ball over the Timber defenders and right to Toure. With his weaker right foot he played in a pass but it did not have the pace to connect with a teammate.

In the 41st minute a nice shot by Griffin Leonard was blocked away by a diving Josh Saunders. Unfortunately that save led to a corner which the Timbers were able to convert into another goal.

In the 42nd minute a corner from the left side found the head of defender Cameron Dunn who beat his marker and powered in a header past Josh Saunders.

The Blues headed into the break down 2-0.

Miami got off to a rough start in the second half by conceding a penalty in the 46th minute. A corner from the right accidentally struck the hand of Eric Vasquez as he was going up for a header. Timbers forward Chris Brown stepped up to the spot and shot low to the left. Saunders guessed correctly and blocked his kick but Brown was able to put the rebound into the back of the net.

The 61st minute contained some nifty footwork by Ansu Toure on the left flank. Always one of the more skilled players he dribbled his man on the end line and gave a good cross into Alex Afonso but it was cleared out by the Timbers.

The Blues fortunes did not get better in the 70th when another penalty was awarded for the Timbers after Cauê da Mata tripped a Timbers player while he was driving into the area with the ball. Chris Brown put the ball away on the first try this time as he fooled Josh Saunders who dived to the right and Brown put the ball to the left.

The end of the game could not have come soon enough with the Blues now looking forward to their game on Saturday against the Seattle Sounders. The final whistle was blown and the Blues suffered the 4-0 defeat.

Miami's next home game at Tropical Park is on September 17th against the Rochester Rhinos. Group tickets are currently on sale by visiting our ticket page by calling 305-728-2612. Single game tickets are available through Ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-866-57-MIAMI. Watch all of Miami's away games and all other USL games live on USL Live!
