Should Turkey join the EU?
Well...I know this will be a bit weird coming from a Greek ...but I just wanted to know if you have an opinion on the matter.
Basically I'd rather Turkey stayed out of the EU, because if they joined then Israel, Syria and most of Asia might ask to join and if we say no then we could start a war in the area but if we say yes then we really aren't the EU anymore.
Also the fact that the Turks have such a large population if they enter the EU their unemployed can come to different countries and take over local peoples jobs leading to unemployment in a lot of countries.
Voting is private but your opinion is wanted as well .

They are already part of Europe in many ways.

Turkey mistreats minorities, as I've read, and that is the main reason why they're not part of the EU yet. Another reason is probably that they are a Muslim country.
They are a powerful contry though, and part of Europe in so many ways, so I think they should be part of EU.

I can only go with how I was treated in Turkey on 2 occasions on holiday.
I was treated with respect, courtesy and with unbelievable dignity.
I LOVE TURKEY. Always have and always will.
I was in Crete a few years ago and the hospitality wasn't as good as that of Turkey. But I had a tremendous holiday.
Turkey for me is a country who should join the EU. A country who don't currently have the benefits of us here in the UK, but who could certainly have the benefits in the not too distant future.
I want Turkey to join the EU.

Kusadasi. 10 years ago.
I went there two years in a row and the Turks were just fantastic hosts. I became friends with lots of the hotel staff and we went out clubbing together during the holiday.
Turkey was by far my best holiday ever and I have been to many different countries.
I just couldn't get over how hospitable they were. In fact, my brother has just returned from Kusadasi. I was with him yesterday and he concurred with everything that I told him about the place. He loved it.
When I went there, it was very cheap to buy things. I couldn't believe that I could eat out in fine restaurants for less than £20 for two, including as much wine as you could drink ! I bought my wife a ring and while we decided, I had Turkish tea and chatted with the guy for an hour. When I got home, I had the ring valued in a top jewellers in Belfast and it was worth ten times more than what I had paid for it. I was gobsmacked !
I know that the Turks have a bit of a reputation for being hotheads, and I did witness a few episodes on holiday, but they are dignified people with manners and extremely hospitable to tourists like me. That's all I can base my judgement on mate.

After some thought, I think letting Turkey in is a good idea for several reasons.
Namely, yes they are muslim, but extremely moderate for a muslim country.
Secondly, they are part of Nato if I"m not mistaken, so to me, that is already good enough reason in itself.

Yes but imagine if we let Turkey join the EU. Britain and a few other countries are close to Israel...how would we say no to them if they asked to join as well...because I am sure they would want to join seeing as Turkey would be allowed in. And then their neighbours would all want to be a part of the ever growing power that would be the EU so if we were to say no to one country after letting Turkey in we could cause problems even war in those areas and we would be to blame because we let one country in to the EU but rejected the others.

I voted no.
Dunno, I just feel like I don't really want Turkey to join EU.

Isreal is not part of Nato, and they would never adopt to European standards. So its foolish to even bring them up.
You do know that Isreal has many human rights violations, and would bring too much "baggage".
As for their neighbours and such, this is also foolish.
Turkey has always had historical ties to Europe, regardless of the religion they support, and being in Europe, they would become even more moderate. These other countries do not have these "ties".

It isn't foolish at all...NATO means nothing atm when it comes to the EU, the US is in NATO so does that mean they should be considered for the EU? I know that is ridiculous but still NATO means nothing when we come to consider who should be part of the EU. Turkey tbf would bring just as much baggage if not more seeing as they are a bigger country with a fair few problems, one of them being their religion.
Turkey have had pretty bad historical ties with Europe, so that is another reason to keep them out. Israel is pretty strongly linked with the UK.
Thats my point a tiny part of their country is in Europe but the rest is in Asia...they must be considered Asian...as they do think of themselves as Asian, except for those who live in the cities on the Eastern Coast who used to belong to Greece.

No they should not. Well at least not if they doesn't improve alot. The military is way too powerful there is always the danger of a military takeover. Free speech is surpressed in somethings such as the genocide on the armanians. If you mention it you'll in danger of going to prision or being killed by turkish nationalist. Alot of women with turkish roots in Germany are abducted and taken to Turkey were they are forced to marry someone they've never met before and then are kept in a slave like life and the turkish gouvernment is doing nothing against it. Corruption is also a problem in Turkey.
In Germany this is topic that is being discussed for a long time now because we have so many immigrants from Turkey here. If they can reform their country succesfully I would have no problem with Turkey joining the EU. But at the moment NO.
@ Mr.Brightside If you would visit Turkey now you would get a different picture because Turkey is overrun by russian tourists which worsend the service alot.
