Lightbulb Scotland must break free - Daily Express

Daily Express: The World's Greatest Newspaper :: News / Showbiz :: Express readers say YES

EXPRESS READERS SAY YES

Scottish Daily Express readers have spoken: they want our country to become independent.

A telephone poll of readers has shown a remarkable turn around in public opinion with a clear majority calling for Scotland to free itself from the Union and become an independent country.

But equally significantly, they want to retain the Queen as head of state and for her to become Elizabeth, Queen of Scots.

A staggering 59 per cent voted "Yes" in our poll which asked "Is independence from the UK, but under one Monarch, the way forward for Scotland?"

It is an astonishing change in opinion from earlier this year when a majority of readers rejected independence.

The poll reflects other surveys which also indicate that First Minister Alex Salmond's flagship policy is becoming more and more popular with every week that passes.

40% of Scots now support independence

FIRST MINISTER Alex Salmond's plan for a referendum on independence has received a boost after a new poll showed a surge in support for a separate Scottish state. The latest snapshot has revealed that 40% of the population want the Scottish government to negotiate independence with the UK government, a figure that is up 5% in three months.

This contrasts with 44% of people who do not want Scotland to pull out of the UK, which is 6% down from August.

The poll, which was carried out in late November and early December by TNS System Three, has the advantage of not being commissioned by a political party.

The firm shaped its independence poll around the exact referendum question Salmond wishes to put to the Scottish people in 2010, namely whether his administration should "negotiate a settlement with the government of the United Kingdom so that Scotland becomes an independent state".

The result is significant as it shows a clear shift in favour of independence within the past three months.

I think it means that they will still be part of the Common wealth and still governed by the queen, like Canada, but solely independant.

Sounds intersting.

Its quite clear, that the Scots and English are just too different to be part of the same banner.

Maybe this is best for all involved.

Disagree.

A long time ago when we were experiencing violence, murder and mayhem here in Northern Ireland, I advocated an independent Northern Ireland, separate from Britain and Ireland, as a solution. Scotland have never had problems like that, so why on earth would they want to become independent from the United Kingdom ?

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a very important bond that helps make up the British Army (for example). Any breakdown of this would completely put our countries in jeopardy.

When we were able to put our violence behind us and democratically talk to each other, I knew that independence would not have worked for us.

I have Scottish ancestors, and I hope they remain British.

I disagree. We are still very similar when you compare us to other nations in Europe. It is still a minoriy of Scots that want independence anyway.

Oh and the Express is one of the worst newspapers going.

I'd be interested in the reasons the people would give that want Scotland to separate.

I could imagine that at least 50% of them would like Scotland to become independant simply for the "rivalry". Just like most Man City supporters would vote that they would want to see ManU relegated.

Not really. Some do but by and large there is a friendly rivalry between the English and the Scots. If they had a 'tremendous resentment' towards us surely more than 40% would want independence?

Pretty clear there's resentment, but Scotland have benefitted - the healthcare system, for example has improved in Scotland since. That's probably where the other 60% are standing.

since Scotland got it's own parliament it has done considerably better than England, as an example, the standard of second level education has risen dramatically compared to England and comes near to if not eqauling that of our own, i.e. Ireland.
